How can I get rid of black triangles between my teeth?

Q.
Dear Mark,
I have black triangles between my teeth where the gum papilla should be. My teeth have gone slightly crooked since I had braces as a teen because I lost my retainer a few years back. I was wondering, I know it’s specific to each case, but is it possible to get rid of black triangles by interproximal reduction and braces? The triangles are relatively small and my teeth are quite rounded, if they were contoured via IPR to make them squarer I think it could possibly close the triangles – however, I’m scared of taking the risk and worsening the problem
Thanks for your time 🙂

It is sometimes possible to reduce the black triangles by carrying out some IPR and more orthdontic closure, but this would depend on the extent or size of the black triangles and if there is any gum problem associated. as you’ve so rightly said we’d have to examine you in person to be able to answer this accurately. Quite often if the triangles are large then a combnation of some IPR/orthodontics and aesthetic correction with some dental bonding, can produce the best result.

Hope that helps? Best thing is to go for a consultation with an experienced cosmetic dentist who can advise you on the orthodontics as well or see an orthodontist first.

Best wishes

Mark
