How can crowns be made whiter?

Q. I have 4 crowns and a bridge at the front of my mouth. I have had these for approx 6 years but feel that over the years they have discoloured and I do not like the shape of some of the teeth. I would like my crowns to be whiter and more natural looking. What treatment could I have to improve the look of my teeth? I have considered teeth whitening but have been informed that crowns can only be restored to their original colour with this method and this may result in the other teeth being whiter.,
A. When my patients become unhappy with the appearance of their existing crown and bridge restorations, I would usually recommend that the only way to permanently improve the appearance of the smile would be to replace these restorations. This would allow you to whiten your teeth (this would result in a short period where the natural teeth and the restorations are a different shade) and then have the new bridges and crowns prepared to match the whitened shade of your natural teeth. I would always recommend prior to any treatment that we create a wax up of how the finished result would look. This would allow you to consult  with the dentist over any changes to the shape and size of the teeth. I hope that this will be of assistance to you, but would encourage you to contact me via our website www.kissdental.co.uk should you require any further information or a free intial consultation.
