Hi. I’m Worried As My Teeth Are Moving Back After Inman Aligner Treatment.

Q.
Hi. 2 weeks ago my Inman aligner was removed, and I was very happy with the result. As soon as the Inman was removed my dentist fixed a fitted retainer to the back of my teeth.
Within a day, I noticed my tooth had moved slightly and got very dis-heartened. I called my dentist and she told me ‘it can’t move, if your worried put your Inman back in until you see me next week’ So I did that and my tooth moved slightly back to position before I saw her again. When I visited her, she told me my tooth was fine and gave me a plastic retainer to wear at night. She said if your concerned, I suggest you wear this every day for the next month. It has now been 5 days. At times I have to remove the plastic retainer for eating and drinking and I’ve noticed that my tooth is moving again. I’m concerned. I am doing everything that the dentist has told me to do but I’m not convinced. Surely with a fixed retainer my tooth shouldn’t move? Sometimes I wear my Inman because it puts extra pressure on the tooth but I can’t do this for the rest of my life. Any advice would be great.

Hello. It is routine to fix a bonded or fixed retainer following treatment with an Inman Aligner, but it does not mean that your teeth cannot move at all. In the majority of cases these retainers work exceptionally well, with no tooth movement at all, however in certain circumstances, especially where there has been significant tooth movement, the teeth will want to move out of alignment. In these cases I would normally suggest a fixed retainer in conjunction with a removable one. In your case this will only work if the original fixed retainer is removed, the teeth straightened again with your original aligner (that should still fit), and a new fixed retainer bonded in place in conjunction with a removable retainer over the top for night time wear. A belt and braces approach. I really hope this helps. Kind regards Marcus Gambroudes.
