Does gum grafting work for receding gums?

Q. Hi There, I’m 24, and I have receding gums on my bottom two front teeth. They have been like this since I was in primary school. I’m not sure why they are like but I did suffer from a poor diet when I was younger and was hospitalised due to sever dehydration. Anyway, I’ve noticed online a thing called gum grafting, but I’ve not really found much objective advice, mainly just adverts. Can you tell me is this a safe procedure, if it really does work, also could it make the problem worse? Thanks

A. Yes grafting does work, if the underlying bone is healthy. If you have only localised areas, oftne the lower incisor teeth or upper canines then it is particularly effective. If you would like to see our Periodontist who carries out this treatment at our clinic please call 01245 268 494

hello, just a quick question, have severe bone loss in my mouth due to chemo, radiation, steroids for cancer. see my dentist q 3months, notice recession in my mouth for years, have pm and planing, mentioned gum graft, but does not sound right to me as my bone loss is somewhat severe and tooth 25 may need it for small recession, does not seem appropriate with horizontal bone loss and bone loss in other areas of mouth, appreciate your comments, thank yoy

Hi, I have a receding gum problem on two of my front upper teeth, as I do not have bleeding gums, I assume it has to with age or brushing too harshly. I would like to get this treated and was wandering if you would be able to give me a rough idea how much this would cost?

It depends on the treatment. As a guide a gum graft starts from around £400, a simple filling on the gum line will be £40

I am getting replacement veneers and my gums has receeded. Should I get the gum grafting before or after replacing the veneers? I feel that the doing the grafting before will be irritated by the veneer work afterwards. Can the replacement veneers be done and then the grafting be done and then to over extend the graft to allow for shrinkage? I actually have the temporary veneers on currently and do like the height of them with the recession. It is to drastic. I really need some advise.

I think you need to speak to your dentist to see what they plan, they will know what to do.

I went to my local dentist and asked how much it would cost for my two front teeth to be filed down slightly, but he was not eager to answer my question, instead he went on to telling me that since I have no bone, I will have to come and get it cleaned once in a while otherwise I will be left with no teeth in a few years time, however he did not answer my question. So can you please answer it for me? Thank-you.

I Think he was trying to explain to you the underlying cause of the lengthening of the teeth, go back to him to see what else he says.
