Should I get a second opinion?

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010
Q.
Following an abscess (and antibiotics) I had a root canal filling in October last year. My dentist told me that he hadn’t been able to fill all of it due to the location of the tooth. Recently a piece of this tooth broke off and I have more pain which he said wasn’t caused by the tooth breaking off. I am on another course of antibiotics and he says that it’s probably not worth trying to fill the tooth again and only option may be extraction which will cost between £400/£500! I have a morbid fear of dentists and cannot tolerate an xray being taken. I am due to return next week but I am dreading what he will say, should I get a second opinion?,

Hello, I have a tooth which needs to have a route canal and was wondering if a veneer would stop this happening or would i need the tooth sorting out first? thanks,

Will I get an infection if the gum closes the little fragments off?

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010
Q.
Hello Dr. Caplan, I had a root canal treatment in one of my first molars before delivery with my first child. i did not get a filling during the pregnancy fearing any pain or complication. two days ago it has fallen off on its own (i know, its sad i could have saved it), and i cant see my dentist for a few days. thing is, only a few pieces are present in the gum and the gum feels like its closing them off. its not too painful and there’s no inflammation. should i rush before that happens? will i get an infection if the gum closes the little fragments off? i will be really thankful if u answer. thankyou,

I was in severe pain. I got a new x-ray that says i have infection at the top of both of those teeth. i am fed up with this dentist. i do not want to go back to him. what is my next step?,

Should I have my tooth removed? Or should I wait till the filling settles down?

Thursday, May 6th, 2010
Q.
Hello I need some advise. I had 2 deep fillings done on back teeth RH bottom side of mouth last Dec. Since then I have nerve pain from one tooth and tingling in lower lip chin and face on that side. Been back to dentist who says nothing wrong with teeth. Went back again, he said he could drill out again or do root canal, although not needed ,or take tooth out. I opted for tooth extraction because I couldn’t stand anymore drilling on nerve. The 2nd injection he gave me when doing the 2nd filling hit the nerve and I had electric shock feeling through face. Is is possible that nerve pain and tingling is due to temporary nerve damage? I still haven’t had tooth out because worried about anymore trauma to nerve. I am off to America in 2 weeks for holiday but don’t want to go away not being able to eat/drink properly. Pain/sensations are there all day but go away at night. Should I opt for tooth out or give it more time to see if it all settles down,?Dentist is hesitant to remove tooth now – too close to holiday. Please help. Have lost a lot of weight due to anxiety. Thanks,

I don’t want my tooth extracted but I’ve been told by my dentist that root canal treatment would fail, any advice?

Thursday, May 6th, 2010
Q.
I have been advised by my dentist that a back tooth needs to be removed (at the moment I have an abcess) but he is not recommending root canal treatment as he does not feel that it will be successful but is happy to refer me to a specialist in that field. I would obviously prefer to keep my tooth but he feels that the root canal treatment would not last and would need to be repeated with the eventual result of the tooth having to be removed. Any advise/recommendations would be much appreciated.,

Will I get more treatment time if I go private?

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010
Q.
Hi Rob, I have an appt for a root canal at your practice at Cadbury and am deciding whether to go for the nhs or private treatment. I am leaning towards the private treatment due to me wanting the highest possible chance of success. However, I have already been booked in for a 50 minute appt and wondered if with the private treatment you allow more time for the treatment? Also, am I likely to need a crown following this treatment as I need to factor in the cost of that too. Finally, what are the other differences between the treatments. I know they use different equipment. Do they both use rubber dams? The dentist has been brilliant so far so I have great confidence he will do the best he can with the equipment available. Thanks… Thanks…,
