Are There Any Alternatives to Root Canal Treatment?

Monday, September 15th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Gambroudes, I’m hoping you can help me with my problem.  I have a deep filling in my second top molar which has a very big cavity. As I’ve mentioned,  is currently patched up with a deep filling, but I have been advised by my dentist that root canal treatment will be required if it gets much worse. I do not want root canal treatment at all, but I also don’t want my tooth to die and lose colour.

Instead of root canal surgery, what can be offered to keep the appearance of a good tooth?

I understand that surgery will probably be required, but don’t know the options or the costs.

Thanks in advance.

I Don’t Know What To Do Now That My Root Canal Treatment Has Failed. Should I Opt For A Dental Implant?

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2014
Q.

I had root canal treatment on one of my back teeth about 8 years ago and it’s now failed. I now need to consider whether to go for a re-root, or to have the tooth out and get an implant. I’m struggling with what to do. The cost of the implant my dentist has advised me it will be in the region of £2.5k and a re-root, which may not have a great success rate for a long period, will be around £1300 with new crown etc. In your experience, is it better to go for an implant? Are there any other alternatives? Also, in the past, I’ve had a lot of work done to my teeth – should I be looking at dental insurance plans now, as I’ve spent £1000’s in the last 10 years.

I Had Root Canal Treatment Two Years Ago But My Tooth Has Now Cracked. I’d Like To Know The Advantages Of Each Treatment Method?

Thursday, August 28th, 2014
Q.

Hello Mark. I had root canal treatment two years ago but my tooth has now cracked, it’s the furthest back molar. Does it need to be replaced with an implant or can it just be removed? I am interested to know what are the advantages of each treatment method? Would just having the tooth removed cause any problems in the future?
There does not seem to be any
infection and the bone is good but the crack means that the tooth moves and is uncomfortable each time I put any pressure on it so trying not to eat on it.

Many thanks.

I Was Due To Have A Root Canal But My Tooth Has Chipped. Can The Treatment Still Go Ahead?

Thursday, August 7th, 2014
Q.

Dear Dr Andrew Moore. I had my first appointment for root canal treatment on my left side bottom back molar a week ago, the dentist drilled and cleaned the inside of the tooth and put a temporary filling in. My next appointment is tomorrow. I grind my teeth in my sleep and yesterday I noticed a small chip in the back right corner of the molar – today a quarter of the tooth has come off! It has broken down near flush to the gum on that corner. Can the root canal still happen? I was told I needed to have a crown put in before – can this still happen with part of the tooth gone? Thank you for your time.

My Dentist Has Told Me That My Tooth Is Damaging The Bone But Is Still Strong. Should I Have It Replaced Or Wait?

Friday, August 1st, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore. I would like clarification on a dental issue I have. I have had problems with my top front tooth for nearly 30 years. I damaged it in my teens and had a root canal performed then. I have subsequently had an apicoectomy twice and repeated root canals from a specialist. I also have a reoccurring cyst in the gum above it. I experience no pain and the tooth is strong. Should I have it replaced now or wait? My current dentist says I should wait as the tooth is strong and I have no pain. He has advised me that it is damaging the bone but over a series of X-rays he feels this is not significant. What should I do? Thank you for your time.

My Tooth Aches After I Had A Root Canal. I’m Supposed To See My Dentist Again Soon. What Treatment Should I Ask For?

Monday, July 21st, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Gambroudes. I had root canal treatment on my tooth one year ago and my dentist placed a ceramic cap on my tooth. But shortly afterwards it automatically came out of mouth while I was eating food. After this incident I visited another dentist, and I found that the previous dentist filled my tooth with cement instead of any permanent material or metal. This second dentist filled it with silver in my tooth after doing some proper cleaning but the next day my tooth started aching. I’m supposed to meet my dentist again soon. Please tell me what treatment I should take from the dentist. Thank you for listening.

Would My Dentist Be Able To Fit My Husband For A Root Canal When We Go To Portugal?

Friday, July 11th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore. Just a quick question. My husband and I are going to the Algarve for two weeks, he has been having problems with a tooth at the front, next to the two front teeth.
The dentist informs him it has a crack and needs two root canal treatments, they are unable to fit him in for a appointment before we leave.
Would he be able to get this treatment done while we are there and if so what sort of cost.
Thank you.

I’m Looking For A Decent New Crown To Improve My Appearance. But Would A Dental Implant Be A Better Option?

Wednesday, July 9th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark, I would like your advice. Some years ago I broke my front tooth and had a crown fitted. I also had root canal treatment on the tooth so there’s no nerve there. I had my original tooth ground down to a little peg for a new crown over the years on the NHS, which is nothing like my other teeth! Now I’m looking to pay for a decent new crown as I want to improve the appearance! My gum is black above the tooth, is there anyway to remove that? Would a dental implant be better for me? Thank you for your reply.

After Cracking A Tooth I Didn’t See The Dentist For A Long Time. Now The Root Canal Treatment Hurts. Is This Normal?

Monday, June 30th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. I am looking for a bit of expert advice as I am a bit weary of the dentist I have been using. I cracked my tooth and left it for a long time. When the pain was too much I went to the dentist and he said I needed to root canal. I have been going to him for the past 3 weeks and he has inserted a rod in one of the canals but not the others yet. I am in constant pain. I am still on my antibiotics but I keep telling him how sore it is and it is like he keeps dismissing me. Is it normal to be in so much pain? Thank you in advance for your reply.

I Had An Abscess Under A Crown And I Had The Tooth Removed. Ever Since I’ve Had A Throbbing Sensation. Any Idea What This Could Be?

Friday, June 20th, 2014
Q.

I had a abscess under a crown in April. I had to have the tooth out and a denture put in straight away. Ever since I’ve had pain throbbing at some point through the day and night, I went back 3 times and was given antibiotics but I’m still having trouble. I went and had a temporary bridge fitted because I was going on holiday. I had aching and throbbing all week while I was away. I come back and was booked in for the permanent bridge to be fitted, but I told my dentist I was still having pain and they said it was coming from a cracked tooth behind which I have to have filled next month. He then went a head and fitted the bridge. I still wake up with this throbbing and aching, I’m taking ibuprofen every 5 to 6 hours which kills the pain, but this isn’t right. Any ideas what could be causing this?
