I Have Recently Got A Removable Retainer After Wearing A Brace For Six Years. My Teeth Are Wobbly, Should I Be Worried?

Thursday, October 31st, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Shaffie, I’m wondering if you can help me. I had braces for six years and removed them about three years ago.  I had them removed and put in a permanent retainer (a wire behind my teeth). My bottom teeth shifted forward (Class III underbite) so they removed the retainer and gave me a removable retainer to wear for a few months. However, it makes me feel like my teeth are very wobbly and loose. Is this normal or should I be concerned? Is there any risk that my teeth are so weak they could fall off if I bite something too hard? Any information would be great, thanks.

I Had Braces As A Teenager, But Now My Teeth Are Misaligned Again. How Much Will I Be Looking At To Fix Them?

Monday, October 21st, 2013
Q.

Hi there Dr Hughes,
I had braces as a teenager but now aged Twenty-One, my two front teeth are misaligned again. My retainer no longer fits properly so that’s no use. Is there anything that can be done to straighten just the front two? How much would I be looking to pay roughly? They are not dramatically crooked but it bugs me. One of them is just slightly behind the other, so maybe only one of them has moved. The change would not be too dramatic but I would feel better. The rest of my teeth are reasonably straight.
Thanks, I hope you can help as I’m not sure how to go about it.

I Want To Know Which Retainer Option Is The Best For Me As My Teeth Overlap Slightly?

Monday, September 23rd, 2013
Q.

Hello, I’m currently having treatment for minor relapse on my upper row. My two front teeth overlap slightly. Currently I have a spring retainer which I feel is working really well for me.

I was wondering which type of retention option do you consider to be the best? There are so many types now with many different pros and cons available.

Also, a friend of mine needed a new Essix retainer so I recommended the dentist who is currently completing my treatment. My friend has advised to me that the retainer she has just received is of very poor quality. How can I tell/ find somewhere that will provide me a good retention option?

Thank you in advance for your time.

Trying To Find a Cheap Price For Retainers Has Become Difficult- Is There a More Affordable Option?

Wednesday, August 14th, 2013
Q.

Whilst searching the web for the best prices regarding retainers, I recently read in one of your posts that you quoted £350 for 3 sets of Vivera retainers. I’ve had Invisalign and now use Vivera retainers. What is problematic is that the dentist who is currently providing me treatment with is charging me £495 for a set of three. I am finding money extremely tight at the moment and was hoping of being able to get a cheaper option. Do you happen to know if there is any way I can order them through you instead? Would I need to change providers and do you know how I would go about that?

My Retainer Cracked And I Want To Know If The Advice I Was Given Is Correct, Can You Help?

Tuesday, August 13th, 2013
Q.

Hello.
I had a 6 month Smile brace, after 4 months, they were removed and i was given a clear retainer.

After 3 months, this retainer cracked. This concerned me quite a bit. After waiting a few days for an appointment, my orthodontist made me a new retainer. However this did not fit and I experienced some movement.

She then made me a new retainer, again, movement occurred. My orthodontist has now taken to adding “clear bonding” to my tooth, to fill the space in my retainer to move my tooth back.

Even now, they are still not as straight as they were when treatment finished. I only have 6 months aftercare and that runs out this month. She is saying i will only qualify to have my braces back on if my teeth have moved more than 2mm. She also stated if my smile is considered to be straight, then they wont consider further treatment.

She told me that movement during retention can happen. My teeth move if i take my retainer out for an hour whilst eating. Apparently this is normal.

Can you offer your insight into this? It would be greatly appreciated

I Am Experiencing Movement Of My Teeth After Orthodontic Treatment, Should I Contact My Orthodontist?

Tuesday, August 13th, 2013
Q.

Dr Butt, despite retaining my teeth after recent orthodontic treatment, I have noticed that my bite has shifted and is wearing down the molar enamel surfaces of the teeth as they are looking more yellow and worn. I feel my front teeth have moved inwards slightly, which has caused the bite to shift. This has given me reason to worry that the new uncomfortable bite that I am experiencing is wearing my lovely teeth down by the day, as I can feel them knocking each other. Should I consult my orthodontist, who made my retainers, about it or is this something that will rectify itself? When I wear my retainer the bite stabilises but when I take it out it shifts and is scraping the teeth. I hope that you can help me with this problem. Thanks.

Is Six Weeks Too Long To Wait For My Retainer?

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013
Q.

Hello there Dr. Moore. I recently had my braces removed, which i have been wearing for 4 years now. I have been having inconsistent appointment with the dentist due to my study schedule and i study pretty far away from the clinic. I had it done at a government clinic, as it it much cheaper. Upon removing the braces, the nurse took a mold of my teeth and i was then informed that i will only be able to receive my retainer about 6 weeks after. Hence, right now i am going through my days without a retainer. I was scared and feeling insecure about my teeth moving out of position as i am not having any form to held my teeth in position, is there anything i can do at the mean time? Will wearing the retainer later on move my teeth back into position if there might be a significant movement of my teeth? I could somehow rather feel that a few of my teeth is moving a little out of position compared to when i took it off 4 days ago, perhaps its the paranoid feeling.

Hope you could give some advice in this and thank you so much in advance.

My Teeth Move Even Though I Wear My Retainer, Help?

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013
Q.

Hello Doctor! So, my problem is that I had fixed braces 7 years ago, then my dentist removed them after 1 year and from that time to now I am using a retainer .. but still if I don’t use it for only an hour my teeth move back to there original position .. I am really tired of it now :/ M dentist is suggesting that I go and get a bridge done on my front 6 teeth .. Now firstly can you tell me what that is? As I haven’t got a clue what a bridge is. Also I would like to know what you think that I should do about this? Like your general opinion because I am really frustrated now. Pleeeeeaseee helpppp ,  I have to tell you as well that my retainer breaks off so easily, even though I take so much care of it .. :/ Nightmare

What Can I Do If My Tooth Won’t Stay In Place?

Friday, April 26th, 2013
Q.

Hi

I paid for the Inman aligned through a local private dentist which pushed my top front teeth into place. My top tooth has move out of place again and I don’t know what to do about it. I am considering a veneer instead perhaps. Would this be appropriate? I went through the long course of wearing the aligned so I don’t want to go through this again but the one tooth appears to be stubborn and wont stay in place… This seems like the treatment was a waste now which is frustrating. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Can my retainer bridge the gap?

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013
Q.

Hello there Dr, I had my braces taken off almost a year ago. I only wore removable retainers for a month and then discontinued using them. However after a year my front two teeth had started to have little gap between them. I therefore began to wear my retainers during the night and it fixed in. But when I take them off in the morning and try to eat it starts to shift again.

So my question is , how long should I wear my retainers to fill the gap? Is it possible to treat with the retainers long term or should I go back to my orthodontist for further treatment?

Thank you
