I Have Problems Eating And Would Like To Know If I Could Get Braces Through The NHS At A Reduced Rate?

Friday, July 25th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. I am 75 years old and chronically disabled. Do you know if it could be possible for me to have a brace fitted to enable me to eat properly and to correct a cross bite involving my front teeth. One tooth on the upper jaw and two teeth on the lower set injures my tongue and inner lips when I am eating (I have difficulty eating too as I have few molar teeth) and also when I am asleep? Would this be possible through the NHS or at a very reduced cost? Thank you for your reply in advance.

I Need My Veneers Replacing And Have No Choice. Would This Still Be A Considered Cosmetic By The NHS?

Thursday, July 24th, 2014
Q.

Hi there. I wondered if you could help me?
I had an accident approximately 10 years ago and knocked my 2 front teeth out. I had veneers fitted and unfortunately I have fractured one and both have dropped considerably. I need to go to my dentist but wondered if you could give me some advice as I’m told you can not get veneers on the NHS as they are for cosmetic reasons, however I originally had them on the NHS and as they need replacing due to them coming to the end if the life it’s not for cosmetic reasons but more through medical or through no choice. Can you confirm if this is true and approximately how much would it cost? Thanks.

Could I Have A Regular NHS Dentist For My General Check-Ups And Go Private For Veneers?

Friday, July 11th, 2014
Q.

Hi there – I’m not currently a private or registered NHS patient. I’m looking to have my top front teeth either straightened or taken out and veneers put in. I also need a filling or two. My question is, is it best to register somewhere else as an NHS patient regarding fillings & then have the veneers done separately to save on cost? On the top front teeth I have a front one and an incisor which cross over slightly and the front tooth is shortened and chipped. Thanks.

The Gap In My Smile Is Starting To Mess With My Confidence. Would Cosmetic Bonding Be Available Through The NHS As I’m Under 18?

Friday, July 4th, 2014
Q.

Hello, I’m under 18 years old and have a gap between my teeth and Its really starting to mess with confidence. I’ve had it since I lost my baby teeth, it’s not very big, only about a quarter of a centimetre but to me it’s a lot. My dentist tells me I don’t need braces but the two teeth next to my front top teeth aren’t straight. But anyway I’m not bothered about those it’s just my gap. I have very thin teeth as it is so I was wondering if tooth bonding would be free on the NHS as I’m 14?

Could You Tell Me Which Crowns Are Stronger: Gold Or Porcelain?

Wednesday, June 25th, 2014
Q.

Hello Andrew, I’d like your advice. I was wondering if you could please tell me if gold crowns are stronger than porcelain ones and is it possible to request them with an NHS dentist? I have been told by a private dentist that gold would be best but they are very expensive. I have large fillings in my back molar teeth already and they do need crowning and I don’t mind them being gold if that is the strongest material to use as I don’t think they will affect my smile. Do you think they would have an effect on how my smile would look? Thank you in advance for your reply.

I Had A Cyst And I May Be Left With A Gap After Surgery. Will The NHS Sort This Out As It’s A Result Of An Operation?

Monday, June 23rd, 2014
Q.

My NHS dentist noticed that a couple of my front teeth appeared to be coming loose so they did an X-ray and found something on the X-ray and referred me to hospital. The consultant at hospital thought it was a cyst and arranged for a biopsy. The results of the biopsy confirmed that it was a cyst – apparently the sort that has a one in three chance of coming back (it has drained a lot since the biopsy). So I have been referred somewhere else for an operation. I may lose a couple of teeth and/or need a plate in my jaw! If after all the surgery I am left with a gap in my front lower teeth will I have to pay to have something done myself with my dentist or would the NHS sort it out because it happened as the result of an operation. I am a bit unclear if I will just be left with a gap. Thank you for any advice.

My Front Two Teeth Need Replacing But I’m Unemployed. Would The NHS Help Me Get Dental Implants?

Thursday, June 5th, 2014
Q.

Hi Andrew. I’ve got two front teeth that need replacing at the moment and I am currently unemployed so I can’t afford implants. Is there anyway NHS dentist do it for free? I’ve previously changed dentist as the one before damaged rest of my front tooth by replacing them with caps and they kept on breaking the edge of the teeth. He also kept on saying no whenever I mentioned whether it was possible for me to get help with dental implants. What should I do? Thank you for taking the time to listen to me.

I Am 18 Years Old And My Teeth Are In Bad Shape. Will My NHS Dentist Cover The Cost?

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Moore. I am 18 years old and my teeth are horrible, my bottom teeth aren’t straight and my top set are really over crowded. I have either the top right canine or lateral incisor missing (there is no gap though) and on the top right I have the adult canine behind the lateral incisor and my baby canine is still there. When I was young my dentist never mentioned braces but now I’m older it’s really affected me. Will my dentist through the NHS cover the cost of braces? Thank you.

How Do I Get Rid Of The Yellowish Colour On My Teeth? Would My NHS Dentist Whiten Them?

Monday, June 2nd, 2014
Q.

Hi there Dr Hughes. I need your advice and help. I am 18 years old and have stained yellow teeth. My front tooth was a baby tooth and has been extracted  a few months ago and now you can see the tooth in the gum which is taking ages to come down. I was wondering how do I get rid of the yellowish colour on my teeth, I am a NHS patient. Would my dentist be able to whiten them? If so, how much would all of this cost? I hate smiling or even talking it’s just embarrassing. Hope you can help. Thank you for your time.
