What can I do to prevent plaque build-up on teeth with periodontal conditions?

Monday, April 11th, 2011
Q.

I am 69 years old and have quite severe gum disease. I brush my teeth twice daily and floss before going to bed every night. I go to the dentist every six months but can’t prevent plaque building up. It’s getting to the point where my lower teeth will have to be removed. Can I do anything to save them at this stage?

How can I keep teeth healthy and free of gum disease?

Monday, March 28th, 2011
Q.

Andrew, as a dentist, what is your ultimate advice and tips to keeping teeth healthy and free of gum disease? Can you really prevent it entirely and do any health factors (ie strength of immune system) have anything to do with it?

Also, should we clean our teeth in warm or cold water? I’ve been using warm (as i’m told it softens tooth bristles and kills bacteria) but is this the correct way?

Many thanks!
