My teeth are crooked and an underbite can ive NHS surgery to correct under bite?

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Q. Hello Safeer, My two upper front teeth are crooked, I’ve spoken to an NHS orthodontist who recommends braces but I am 27 and would rather avoid that! Is it possible to have the teeth removed and implants implanted? I will also require NHS surgery to correct an underbite, would it be possible to integrate NHS surgery with private implants? Lastly what would be the cost if the implants were doable? Thanks for your time

A. hi
it is not possible to comment on the underbite treatment without seeing you.
implants cost 2200 per tooth approx.
have you considered invsalign braces as this will address the cosmetic concerns with braces
the nhs does not  allow the mixing of private treatments

I had my root canal treatment done but now when i try to chew on it I hurts very much advice

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Q. About 2 years ago i had root canal treatment on a cracked tooth and the tooth was then filed down and a crown put over it. Everything has been fine up until now but now when i try to chew on it i hurts very much and the pain takes a while to go away. Im just wondering what has occured to suddenly have brought on this pain.

A. hi
you may have developed a crack in the root or the root canal may have started to fail due to bacterial proliferation around the root

My 6 yr old daughter has a swollen gums due to silver caps on them can anything be done?

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Q. My 6 year old daughter with special needs was put under for dental treatment. She came out of surgery with her 4 front teeth (2 top and 2 bottom) pulled and all her other teeth had silver caps on them. Her gums have been swollen since. The dentist told me brushing them will help correct the swelling??? Months later, still swollen and she seems in pain. She screams when I brush. Again, dentist said to come back in 6 months. Finally able to find new dentist who told me the caps are too big for her teeth and have caused gingervitis. Her gums look raw and because she is adopted and on medicaid, I feel like I can not get decent help for her. The new dentist claims there is nothing that can be done since the caps are permanant. Isn’t there something I can do for this poor child. She has special needs so I must brush for her and she can’t communicate if she is in pain but her screaming tells me she is. She is constantly poking at her mouth and rubbing her face so I know it bothers her. A year has already gone by from surgery and gums still swollen. I have seen 3 dentists now and no one seems to think they can do anything? Is it because of her insurance?? Or is there no hope for her situation and do we need to just wait for her baby teeth to fall out? I feel so sorry for her and do not want her uncomfortable any longer.

My dentist said to me to have more space for my bite gap what does she mean about it?

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Q. When I was getting measurements for my two front teeth for crowns this week, my dentist measured it twice. She said she wanted me to have more space for my bite gap. what did she mean by this? Does this mean I’ll have a gap between my teeth, I’m getting crowns to correct my front teeth to not have a space. In dental terms what did my dentist mean? thankyou.

A. hi the dentist is referring to thespace between the teeth when you bite together in a verticaldirection, ideally there needs to be a light contact or space so the teeth do not feel proud when you bite together.

My gum are discolored and my dentist said veneer is the right option what do you think?

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Q. Hello I was just wondering if you could possible help me please. The problems with my teeth are that at top by the gum they are discoloured, and and my dentist said that the best way in with to deal with it is to have veneers and for me that seems a little harsh??? Regards

A. hi
it alldepends on how dark they are .
you need to ask your dentist if they would respond to bleaching.
the other alternative is to have the surface tooth layer in this area removed and replaced with white filling.
this is irreversible

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Q. sir, My teeth are totaly yellow and some where a blck cracks on the back jaw. please advice me about this problem thanks,

A. hi
you either have decay or staining in the fissures of the teeth, which may need fillings if it is decay
yellow colour is due to inadequate cleaning or staining
you can try bicarbonate toothpaste or whitening

I have fillings on my two front teeth but the dentist smeared them over is it possible to remove it

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Q. I have had white fillings along the top of my two front teeth but the dentist smeared them over the teeth and my teeth have now stained a darker colour than the surrounding teeth. Is it possible to get these fillings removed?

A. hi
it should be simple to replace them or polish them in to get rid of the excess
white fillings will always stain over time

My molar teeth filled with amalgum is slightly loose do i need a crown or do it need a root canal

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Q. I have a molar which had been filled with amalgum about 8 years ago in a cross shape. Recently two p[ieces of the tooth around the edge have broken off leaving the filling and the front part of the tooth. The filling is slightly loose. There is no pain in the tooth atall. Do you think this would need crowning or can it just be built up and smoothed off with white stuff. And if a crown in required would it need a post, as its a molar. Also what is the criteria for doing a root canal, was wondering if this would be necessary aswell. Thanks

A. hi
the chance of needing root canal is dependent on if there are any nerve symptoms which your dentist should be able to confirm with tests and an x ray.
if you have lost that much tooth you will be advised to have a crown, a post is only used when there is not enough tooth and a root canal has been done

My lower molar became infected and i am hesitent to invest in endodontist what are my options

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Q. I have had root canal treatment in a lower molar twice over the past 10 years. About a year ago it became infected and my dentist suggested that I try to save the tooth by going to an endodontist. I didn’t have the money for the treatment so didn’t follow go ahead with it. The infection/pain came back every month or so but I learnt that if I managed th pain with painkillers it would generally pass within a week or so. Now though, I am in pain every other week. I really need some advice on what to do. I am hesitent to invest in endodontist treatment when there is such a high risk that it won’t work (I’ve had root canal twice already and the year-long infection furthe rlowers thesuccess rate). I am thinking it would be more sensible to have the tooth removed but I dont know what the options are for replacement. A crown will weaken the adjacent teeth right? So are my only other options an implant or denture? Do you agree that my chances of root canal working now are lower? which type of tooth replacement would you suggest? If I were to find a NHS dentist, could they do any of this work? I take it that once the tooth is removed, all problems of infection in the root will also be resolved? I hope you can advise. Thanks

A. hi
removing the tooth is a good option as your chance of success now is considerably lower.
the ideal replacement for a fixed non removable option is an implant or a bridge , neither of these is a nhs option.
you may be able to get a removable denture on the nhs
once the tooth is out your symptoms are likely to resolve although the tooth willprobaby shatter when they try to remove it.

I am having a bridge fitted but tooth behind is very heavily filled will it cause problem

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Q. Hi I am having a bridge fitted in 3 months but the tooth behind is VERY heavily filled, will this be a problem? Cheers

A. hi
if the tooth behind is nothing to do with the bridge then it will not influence it , however if it is part of the bridge then the weakness will be improved with the crown as part of the bridge or you may need a post to strengthen it , best to talk to your dentist

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Q. hi there im 26 and have overjet top teeth of about 9-10mm. i was wondering if i would be able to get a brace to fix this free on the nhs or would they class it as purely cosmetic? i get pain in my back teeth, often bite my bottom lip i also feel i clench my back teeth quite alot which also causes pain. and feel it sometimes effects my speech any advise is really appreaciated. thanks

A. hi unfortunately you are above 18 so nhs guidelines do not allow treatment
try to ask your dentist to refer you to the orthodontic department in a local hospital in the hope they will treat you

How much would it cost me to have my teeth removed and have full dentures

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Q. hi i only have 4 top teeth and 6 bottom teeth left, an they are all in a bad state, i do have dentures for my back teeth, but never wear they coz my dentures and my teeth are two diferent shades, how much would it cost me to have my own teeth removed and have full dentures, an how long would i have to wait with no teeth

A. hi extractions of the remaining teeth will cost about £500 pounds and new full dentures range from 400 to 900 each depending on what type you go for
research sugggests you should wait at least 10 weeks after the extractions before you start work on the new dentures which take about a month to make

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Q. I was told I may need a cap on a molar, the hole hasnt reached the nerve yet. Can I get away with just a filling?

A. whether the hole has reached the nerve or not influences whether you need a root canal , the crown is for strength why dont you ask your dentist

Im 17, would like to know the cheapest teeth straightening product apart from braces

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Q. hello, im 17 and need help, i have goofy teeth i have been bullied most of my teen years, i would like to know what is the cheepest product to use for teeth streightning apart from train track braces?

A. hi
it depends on how bad the teeth are as if it is only the front teeth per arch it could be between 1500 to 2200
if both arches and serious you could use invisalign but the costs are 3-4000

I started to do my implants now i decided to do invisalign can i leave the post in for so long?

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Q. Hi I have a question, About 3 months ago i started to do my implants. I have 2 posts inside and was supposed to go for the crowns soon, Now i decided to do invisalign my dentist said i should wait to finish treatment of invisalign before putting crowns in. My question is can i leave the posts in for so long? And whats the difference if i put crowns in the implants are3 not gonna move regardless.

A. hi
are you sure you have had implants and not post crowns .if you have had implants the invisalign will not be able to move the implants .and ideally the teeth with post crowns will need to be done at the end of ortho treatment

I have a small hole in my teeth and i need filling are they available only in NHS

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Q. I recently went to the dentist and she found a small hole on one of my teeth. She has x-rayed it to check for decay and told me to come back. I have a couple of questions.. I am going away for the whole summer and can’t get an appointment before i leave, is my tooth likely to get worse in this period of time? Also, im terrified of needles, and have been told dentists use them to give pain killers when doing fillings -is there any other way my dentist will be able to give me pain killers? (on the nhs) Lastly, I’m worried about the appearance of fillings, I’ve never had one before and don’t want the ones that appear black, are they the only ones available as an NHS treatment? Thanks very much for your time.

A. hi
if a tooth has decay the proression of the decay will depend on numerous factors ,sugar in the diet, cleaning , extent of decay and time.
if there is little decay and you are conscientious it will likely be ok over the summer.
no you cannot have painkillers and you can only have a white filling privately.
if the filling is indeed quite small there is a chance of doing it without anaesthetic

I had pain in second last upper tooth is there any possibility of alternate than implant or bridges

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Q. I am about 43 & I had pain in my second last upper tooth. This tooth had very old filling. After some checkups my doctor suggests to go for implant as there is crack found after removing old filling. Now, I feel pain only if use that side for eating. My question is that, is there any possibility of simpler alternate than implant or bridge. In reality, I see many people simply extract the tooth, leave the space empty, live for years and get used to it. Thanks in advance. Regards

A. hi
simply put you can opt not to have the space filled , but be aware surrounding teeth may tilt into the space or opposing teeth ove -erupt
