What are the risk in pulling out wisdom teeth?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Q. Are there any risks in getting wisdow teeth pulled from only one side of the mouth? Like loss of equalibrium or anything ? And would deep rooted nerves in wisdom teeth cause tinnitus ?

A. You need to ask the dentist doing the surgery as there a a number of common risks and some uncommon ones. ther are some evidence based guidlines from NICE ( Nat institute of clinical excellence) on when its a good idea and when its not.

Can implants replace my dentures?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Q. Dear Rob, I have lost about half of my teeth. I had a set of dentures made up a couple of years ago, but find them impossible to wear, they are extremely uncomfortable. To compound this problem, all of my front teeth were damaged in an accident a number of years ago, and i have a habit of grinding what remains of them. The are becoming quite ‘threadbare’ and sensitive. I am also not in a position to fund the extensive dental surgery I would require to prevent further damage. I believe there are certain criteria that the NHS would consider adequate medical justification for funding implants, and I was wondering if a patient such as myself would fall into this group. Please advise. Many thanks,

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Q. Hello im due to have my tooth taken out witch id rather have it capped but how much would it cost to cap a tooth its the front and to the left at the top

A. it depends on what is wrong with the tooth. If it needs root treatment and a post before crowning the cost may double. anything from 350 to 1000. you need to know what the chance of success is if you do the work. Rob

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Q. I have a partial denture for my upper left and right lateral incisors, but am interested in looking at implants, as this would be a more permanent solution.I admit I have not looked after my teeh very well in the past but I am determined to this time but dont fancy wearing dentures long term – my NHS dentist has mentioned veneers or bridges but not sure about that either. Many thanks.

Should I had to wait six months before a bridge was fitted after tooth extraction?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Q. I am due to have my bottom front tooth extracted due to a snapped root, do you have to wait six months before a bridge can be fitted as i am having mine fitted on the same day and i am feeling very unsure that i should be fitted with a denture first

A. during the first six months after an extraction the bone will reshape. A denture is easier to adapt to this change. a bridge fitted after six months is likely to easier to adapt to the stable shape. bridges fitted at extraction sometimes need replacing after six months. Rob

Is there any possibility to extract as many teeth to hv avg smile?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Q. As an early teen I had chipped the top, front 6 of my teeth rollerblading. They felt loose for a while and had always bothered me the way they healed. It bothers me how my front teeth are displayed slightly misaligned to my left and with an overbite as well. The Army Dentist insisted on putting veneers over them. That never did anything to fix the misalignment problem of the front two top teeth being aligned under my nose. It seems the injury I must have suffered as a kid made the teeth grow in this way after they healed. I am disappointed and finished with the idea of trying to salvage my smile at this point in my life. I am wondering if you may be able to let me know if there is a possibility that there is a Dentist out there that would extract my front, top 6 teeth or as many as needed to have an average looking smile that is aligned under my nose. Thanks very much

A. if the teeth are healthy you should look into clear positioner orthodontics such as clearstep or invisalign

What would be the cost for teeth straightening?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Q. Dear Mr Tennet, I used to be a patient of yours at cadbury’s dental practice and thought it may be better to ask you than any of the other doctors. I have two teeth at the front which are a little longer in vertical height than the others… My aim is for them all to be the same vertical length, so ideally I would like them straightened across the board. How much would it cost just for that?

A. to reshape the teeth without fillings or veneers should be less than $100 Call amy for the free intial consultation 01216430610 Rob

Can the process of tooth extraction be quicker?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Q. I went to my dentist (NHS)for the second time re. my wisdom tooth. I was given antibiotics and she drained some of the infection. I asked to be referred to a specialist for extracion. This takes up to 6 months. I hate taking antibiotics and would rather have the tooth out asap. Can this process happen quicker i.e through private practice? What is the wait for an operation when going private and where could i go? I don’t understand why she seems reluctant to refer me and get it treated properly. I live in London. Best Wishes

I suggest that you see a 2 or 3 different practices to get some quotes and decide which option suits you best. Try to decide a budget and what if any comprimisesyou can make on cost, appearance or timing.

The base of the cavity is bit dark after having molar tooth removed Is its normal?

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Q. Hi, I’ve had a molar tooth removed recently after it fractured from eating food. I took some photos with my camera to see if it was healing well and i noticed that at the base of the cavity it looked quite dark, almost silvery like my other fillings. Is it normal to be this colour?, could the dentist have just left the lower part of my tooth etc in my jaw? Can i send the photo to get your judgement? Thanks

How long I hv to wait to replace crowns/veneers?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. I’ve recently had a wisdom tooth and molar next to it extracted. I am eager to proceed with treatment to replace a number of crowns/veneers and would like to know how long I should wait until I can have an impression done to get this work done. The extractions were difficult and I had to take two courses of penicillin but the site appears to be healing well? Thank you

A. Difficult to generalise in this instance but I would not expect problems after a couple of weeks

I m considering mini dental implants for my upper plate Plz advice

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. Good afternoon. I am a 46 year old female and am having trouble adjusting to my upper denture. I have had a full upper denture for approximately 2 1/2 years. My original dentist removed my remaining 6 front teeth, and made my denture. After 6 months, he made another upper due to the shrinkage of my gums. The first set did not fit well, even with adjustments, so I ended up gluing them in until he made my second plate. The second plate did not fit well or look good at all. After repeated fittings and adjustments, I kept both upper plates and returned to wearing the original plate made. About 1 year after these plates were made, I went to affordable dentures and had a new upper plate made which was much better appearance wise, and fit alot better than the others. This has been a litter over a year ago, and I wore them for about 4 months before I started having to use adhesive to hold them in. I am considering mini dental implants for my upper plate as I have to use the adhevise several times a day to keep my teeth tight. I have spent what I consider a considerable sum over the years (approximately $3,800.00) for this work. How many posts would be required to hold an upper plate in position and would the implants do what I need them to do? Thanks so much for your time.

A. The specifics of the volume and health of the bone combined with the bite force and direction will determine your answer. You will need a clinical assesment for this.

Could you Plz give some info on vampire teeth

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Q. I need to know of where I can get vampire teeth at?

A. Veneers or lumineers would be the normal way to achieve a semi permanant look but be aware that the human bite does not naturally conform the enlarged teeth and a higher rate of fracture / restoration debond is likely.
Also consider if you want Nosferatu middle fangs or Christopher Lee Style corner fangs
guide price £400-600 per tooth

How long does the infection in my mouth last for?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Q. Hi i just got dentures about 3 weeks ago and they still hurt abit when i chew my food. Is that normal? and also i have a infection on the roof of my mouth my dentist gave me this medication called nystatin ointment to put inside my denture it doesn’t taste very good i gag everytime i use it. how long does the infection usually last for. Thanks

A. Nystatin treats fungal infections. In general fungal infections tend to require prolonged treatments.
If you are new to dentures a small ammonut of discomfort is normal, if this continues for more than 2 weeks I would return to your dentist for further assesment.
