Q. Hello Dr, For the past couple of months (even in between Dentist visits) I have a feeling on my gums. Its a funny clicky, popping feeling as if air was getting under a layer of my gum and then requires for me to press down to pop it away. I hope I’m explaining myself right. I feel so frustrated since I do a lot of public speaking and I’m so afraid of loosing my teeth. My husband calls me paranoid, but what do you think I’m experiencing. At times the feeling last days. Sometimes its a little painful, mostly uncomfortable but mostly frustrating. One dentist ranked out gum disease. I brush three times a day and after i brush the feeling subsides for a while until I eat, chew gum the noise comes back. I even feel it behind my two front teeth’s upper gum. HELP!
A. It is very difficult to give you a diagnosis without seeing you, if you feel your dentist is not examining your problem please find a good dentist or periodontist (gum specialist) so you can have a full examination. It sounds like the gums may have lost some of their “attachment” to the teeth.

Q. Hello I am a 17 year old and my front two teeth are forward and so they are not straight and alinged with the other teeth. Can an inman aligner fix this and push these front teeth back so my teeth would be perfectly straight? Also, would I have to remove teeth for this? Thanking you
A. It really depends on how your teeth look an Inman aligner may straighten them if not a fixed brace or invisalign may be other options.

Q. I bite the inside of my cheeks alot, almost ever day since almost 10 or more yrs im 23 now.I don’t know what trigged this behavior but i cant stop. Every time im idle, i tend to do it.Even when im studying i do it the most also when im anxious. Im scared that it might lead to cancer since its a chronic habit. I really need help to stop it.Do you know by any chance why i do it and how i can stop it. Thank you
A. It can be because your teteh angle outwards or do not meet properly which can be corrected by orthodontics(tooth straightening). Sometimes wisdom teeth can cause this go to your dentist so your teeth and bite can be checked.

Q. what are other options on correcting spaced teeth in front of mouth to make a nice smile?
A. It depends on how your teeth are spaced, the size of your teeth and how your teeth bite together. You may be able to orthodontics to close the gaps, you may need dental implants to fill larger spaces or cosmetic treatment to make your teeth wider to close the gaps.

Q. Hello, I have had a Inman Aligner treatment and I finished it. But my dentist suggested I wear the Inman Aligner after the treatment for few more months so I have worn it for more than 10 months(I guess, but I did have proper treatment before wearing Inman Aligner with metal thing). Unfortunately, I lost it today and I don’t think I could find it and moreover, I don’t I could see my dentist again, as he is in different country. I want to have a new Inman Aligner, the appliance, but not the treatment, as I have finished it already. How much do you think, in this case, would cost me to have an Inman Aligner? If it is far over £500(but I do hope that the cost would be far less than 500, as I DO NOT NEED ANY TREATMENT, BUT JUST THE APPLIANCE), could you recommend me other appliances that might be suitable to keep the “already rearranged shape”?(And that should be fairly cheap, because my parents have already paid quite a lot to arrange a treatment for me and they do not want to spend extra money, which means that I have to pay)
A. You need a retainer if you are happy with your teeth now you need a fixed metal wire placed around the backs of the front teeth and a removable “gumshield” retainer. Find an orthodontist or good dentist and they will be able to provide this for you.

Q. I’m quite young, Actually just 21! I used to always hate going to the dentist when i was little so i had Pretty teeth in the front but horrible ones in the back. When i finally went to one when i was 16 he did 4 root canals on 2 of my back teeth on both sides. I had medicaid at the time and didn’t tell me that medicaid wouldn’t pay for the rest so basically i couldnt do anything about it. From then on i had to get 2 back teeth pulled (on the same side) which doesn’t bother me.. I’m goin to have to get the other teeth pulled soon and some on top in the back. My question is. well my front teeth are decaying and almost gone. What are my options that i can get done. I will save up the money to pay for it but just trying to get info on what i should be getting done! and its about 4 teeth up front! Thanks so much for your time!
A. It depends on the extent of the decay if the teteh can be saved root canal treatmnet and crowns may be an option, if the decay is quite shallow you might be able to have fillings. if the teeth need to be removed your options are dentures, bridges or dental implants.

Q. I am 46 year old and have alway hated my uneven teeth. I hate having my photo taken and I have wanted to have vaneers on them for years. I think that i need at least eight and teeth whitening to make them look better. Can you tell me how much this procedure would cost. Thank you
A. It depends
on how crooked your teeth I often carry out some short term straightening of your teeth first and would then place veneers as this minimises the removal of your natural teeth. You need to find a good cosmetic dentist and have an assessment.

Q. My son just had braces placed yesterday and is having trouble finding things to eat because he can’t chew and it’s painful, therefore, he’s been going hungry. Can u offer any ideas for some foods he can try, especially at school, so he doesn’t starve himself to death??
A. The first two weeks are the toughest getting used to all the wires! Soft foods are best soups and pastas seem to be most popular. Some painkillers initally can help, ask for orthodontist for tooth wax that goes over the braces to stop them rubbing.

Q. Hi Dr. Patel, About 2 years ago I was getting a root canal and my tooth cracked and the tooth had to be pulled. It was the last tooth on the bottom. Now, the tooth above where the old tooth was is growing. The tooth that is growing is a crown. Should I have that tooth pulled? Should I have my regular dentist pull the tooth. Thank you.
A. You need to see your dentist and have it checked if you are wearing a lower denture than the top tooth should not move. Another cause could be the bone around that top tooth has weakened. Go and see your dentist.

Q. I have an abnormal physcological fear of dentists which is a result of a face slap by a dentist when I was a child (he pushed a sore tooth with his finger and I bit his finger) The last time I visited a dentist was 1972 they pumped me full of “happy gas” to try and get me to relax, I burned it up quicker than they could pump it in. When I get hurt I become violent, subsequently I have to be put under with a general anesthetic. My teeth need to be sorted out and some implants out in for ones that are missing and others that will have to be removed, but feel it would have to be done under proper hospital op conditions Is this possible please.
A. Hi, there are other options, certainly you might be able to have treatment under general anaesthetic at a hospital. In my clinic we treat so many nervous patients who have had similar problems to you. You need to find a dentist you can trust. in my practice we use IV sedation but we also use a medical anaesthist you can combine a number of drugs to relax you. I find this works very well.

Q. Hello Doctor,I’m 13 years old. The 2 teeth to the sides of my front 2 teeth are slightly rotated and leaves a gap when I smile. I’ve been to the orthodontics and they refuse to give me treatment under the NHS. So i would like to know what the best treatment to straighten my side 2 teeth would be, also i would like to know the approximate amount of the treatment if i did it privately. Thankyou
A. You have the option of private fixed braces or invisalign, costings vary from £2000 upwards.

Q. I’m 17(nearly 18) but I’m still in full time education (colledge). My teeth severly affect my confidence, I never smile in photos, I have 2 chipped front teeth from rough play as a child and still have 4 worn down baby teeth where my adult teeth haven’t grown through and according to an x ray aren’t there. Is it possible to get vineers/crowns on the NHS?
A. It is go and see your NHS dentist and I am sure they will be able to do something.

Q. Hi there. I have been unhappy with the gaps in my upper and lower teeth. I had them recently filled but still i have a gummy smile and not all the gaps in my lover set of teeth could be filled because the gaps were to big. What other treatments could i get to get a really nice stright smile? Thanks for your time.
A. You need to have your teeth assessed properly you may be able to have the spaces closed with braces either fixed metal or invisalign. Another option may be porcelain veneers as this could also reduce the gummy smile.

Q. I have 6 bottom front teeth and a top plate, could vou tell me if it is possible to grind down the bottom teeth and fix on a full denture, and how much would it cost?thankyou.
A. You could have something called an overdenture which sits over your existing teeth. The teeth can also be used to secure a new denture using precision attachments or clasps.

Q. Hi I had braces when I was about 11 years old and at that time braces was not such a common thing like today. However, when I took off my braces, it left the trace of the braces of my front two teeth and I have practically been living with that for the past 8 years. I know it’s because of decalsification of the enamel or something like that. So basically you can see the brackets of the braces on the fron
t too teeth and its stands out because it is a different whitish color. Can I do anything to get rid of this? It does lower my self esteem in a way and I wish my orthodontist had warned me about it at that time so I would have taken extra precaution. I just want to smile with confidence. I also have some a problem with some of my teeth being yellow. Is there anything that can be done?
A. You could try micr0abrasion where the surface is removed and a cosmetic filling is plced over the defects to blend it in. it is difficult to give you options without seeing you.
