Can I get teeth whitened for big day next year?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010
Q. I am getting married next year abroad and would like to have my teeth whitened for the big day. How close to flying out would you recomend having the treatment done, and how much does the procedure cost? thankyou,
A. Thansk for your question, I would personally recommend that you commence treatment about a month prior to leaving. Although it would depend on the systems you choose, this would allow time for any home whitening you may wish to do in conjunction. The cost of whitening varies between practices and systems, thopugh I can tell you that our whitening treatments start from £250. May I take this opportunity to wish you well for your wedding.Kindest RegardsDr Kailesh Solanki

Can my teeth be whitened?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010
Q. I Doctor ,i was told by my mother that she was sick when i was in her womb and was given antibiotics she believes it what caused my stained teeth. i also have very sensitive teeth.do you think my teeth can get white without veneers or crowns. which system can achieve that.please help thanks,
A. It’s hard to tell when it comes to Tertacycline staining on teeth, which procedure will work and which won’t. I have seen bleaching that has worked for some, but some have not had good results - You would be taking a risk then if you were to do bleaching.Justin Glaisterwww.umbrellasmiles.com

Can naturally discoloured teeth be whitened?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010
Q. Hi, My teeth are naturally quite discoloured. I remember when my adult incisors came, it only took about three months for them to emerge and they were exactly the same off-white as the other teeth. if my teeth are naturally yellower, can they be whitened? what is the most effective method? i am only returning to the UK briefly this christmas – is it safe to have this procedure done without consulting my regular dentist? many thanks.,
A. Teeth whitening works differently on every individual and it is impossible to predict ho it will and wont work for. Teeth whitneing is the cheapest and least invasive way to acheive a brighter smile so it may be workth trying it and if you do not like the result you have acheived then you can look at other options.Kind regardsDr Justin Glaisterwww.umbrellasmiles.com

What treatment can I have for stained teeth?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010
Q. Dear Dr. Glaister, I wonder if you can advise me on the most effective treatment for my teeth. All of my front teeth are totally stained brown on the inward facing side of the teeth. I presume this is caused by smoking (which i have now given up)in the main and by the fact that my teeth have never been cleaned by a dentist. It would be great if you could advise me. Thankyou,
A. Ita hard to give you an opinion with assessing your teeth as there a few options avaible. Whitneing and orthodontics may be the best way forward, or it might be Veneers. I recommend you book a consultation with a consmetic dentist to explore your optios. You are very welcome to visit me at my clinic (020 7612 9810).Knd regrdsDr Justin Glaisterwww.umbrellasmiles.com

Friday, January 15th, 2010
Q. I have a dental bridge and would like to whiten my teeth, can dental bridge also be whitened without damage?,
A. it is not possible to lighten a dental bridge – you would need it changed if you bleach your teeth as your natural teeth will lighten but the bridge will not

What can be done for discoloured and crooked teeth?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
Q. Hi just wanted to ask you a quick question I have always been upset about my teeth from a very young age. My teeth look yellow even though I have tried many products i.e pearl drops and many many more teeth whitening tooth paste. None of them seem to work and it is really frustrating. My front two teeth really need to be pushed back a little. I am forever getting picked on and laughed at by family members and friends. Sometimes when I am going to laugh I cover my mouth thats how awful I feel about them. Please help,
A. hiwhitening toothpastes can be very abrasive and make your situation worse by wearing away your white enamel and exposing yellow dentine.consider a minor brace to move the teeth and proper bleaching or veneers to correct the colour.you are welcome to a free consult at any of the s3 dental practices

Should I get whitening or lumineers?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
Q. Hi Rob, I have just read one of your replies re: cost and if lumineers are a better choice or not. My question would be for your recommendation for stained/discoloured teeth (by tetracycline). Mine have been whitened twice already (Zoom) and of course they are a lot better but they are far from being white. Most of the people say there is nothing wrong with them but i still don’t like the photos of me smiling as they are way too yellow/greyish (especially comparing someone smiling next to me). They are slightly crooked as well but not too bad. What would be your recommendation? Invisalign and more whitening (what i’m concerned about doing too many times) or lumineers? I really liked the idea of lumineers first but since I have read a lot of bad as well. The price is also quite high for me. I’d also like to keep my original teeth as long as i can as apart from the colour there hasn’t been anything wrong with them. Please advise. Thanks a lot in advance.,
A. you are unlikely to significantly further whiten your teeth with more Zoom treatments. The lumineers can change the shade and correct minor alignment issues without drilling in most cases, it takes 3 weeks and only two or three treatment visits. If you would like a free initial assesment at the StJohns Dental Practice in Birmingham please call Gurjit on 0121 643 0610 for details.Rob

Can anything be done for colour of temporary teeth?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
Q. I have just had my 2 front teeth removed today as they had overlapped for years and also I had fell on the hearth when my front teeth were just coming in. I decided to have cosmetic surgery, I had this today. They have fitted temporary teeth until my empress crowns are ready in 2 weeks, Since coming home I have noticed that they are very yellow compared to my teeth and has made me feel quite depressed, is there anything I can do to whiten them??,
A. It bmay be the colour of the temporary crown material your dentist has used. I would discuss with him that you have chosen the final colour correctly and your final Empress crowns should be much lighter and match your adjacent teeth

Is there a cost effective way to whiten my teeth?

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
Q. My teeth are badly stained from the drinking water in my area when i was young. They are now yellow in colour and have been advised by my dentist that whitening will not help. Could you recommend a cost effective way i could get my teeth white?,
A. The best whitening systems are the ones provided by dentists I recommend any system that combines home whitening and laser whitening.  Ask to see your dentists before and afters of whitening treatments and ask if there are any guarantees.

Treatment for discoloured teeth

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. I am a lady of 55 although I don;t smoke, drink red wine, etc – my teeth are grayish/yellow – my dentist says it’s an age thing and nothing can be done to improve the look of my (not to bad) teeth. I do have receeding gums and some bleeding – just wanted to know your oponion ?,
A. I would definitely try bleaching your teeth – this will lighten your teeth  ( any existing white fillings and crowns/veneers will not lighten and may need to be replaced following bleaching)

Does teeth whitening last?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. hello my teeth dont just want whitening, they are more yellow, can i get pure white teeth,im 61,my teeth are in good condition, but i dont want promises that cant be done,is this expensive and will it last,
A. I would need to see you and your teeth to give you a definitive answer but I generally find yellow teeth whiten really well.  Find a good cosmetic dentist and ask to see before and photos of their own patients.  Most whitening treatments come with some sort of guarantee.

What teeth whitening system should I have?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. Good evening Dr Patel, I would like to have my teeth whitened. Unfortunately I have already 2 crowns – right at the front – the big 2 teeth which means I will need to have the teeth whitened and then also will need to swap for new, colour- matching crowns. Now, one of my friends has had hers done by our dentists; they would create the trays (cost effective for future re-use) and I will wear those at home for 2 – 3 weeks or so. She had hers done there too but to me the teeth look little white-blu-ish colour, not as bright and shiny as my other’s friend’s who has had a laser whitening. Not sure if it’s their teeth or if the colour outcome can be different from trays/laser systems? so I am not sure where to have it done, whether to go for the laser or the home bleeching with the trays from my dentist; there is also such a choice of systems and companies on website so it’s hard to find what’s best; just want healthy looking, bright and shiny teeth :) thanks a lot for your answer, very appreciated, Tracy,
A. I have tried most systems and in my practice we combine the home system with a laser treatment the two together gets the best results.

I want teeth whitening but had bulimia in past – is it possible?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. i want to get my teeth whitened with zoom whitening however years ago i suffered with bulimia and it has damaged my teeth alot will whitening them damage them even more? also are there any procedures than can strenghten your teeth?,
A. Zoom whitening if carried out professionally won’t damage your teeth, but if they are thin from bulimia they may be more sensitive during and after the procedure. If your teeth are damaged you may want to consider crowns or veneers to protect and strenthen them whilst improving the appearance (such as whitening them). I would recommend a consultation to discuss this in full before whitening the teeth. Kind regards Justin

How do I choose the right dentist for discoloured teeth?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. Hi, I am 21 years old and have severely discoloured teeth from taking strong medications over the last 10 years. I had previously considered tooth whitening but because I have numerous fillings in the front of my teeth this wouldn’t work. I am therefore considering veneers, particularly lumineers as I have very sensitive teeth. Do lumineers have a shorter life than porcelain veneers? How do you work around veneers if at a later date fillings need to be carried out? Obviously there are so many cosmetic denists around, how do I go about chosing the right dentist for the job? Many thanks,
A. You need to find a cosmetic dentist you feel comfortable with , ideally if you can get a personal recommendation, go for consultations and see how you feel about the options offered.  Ask to see before and after photos of patients that dentist has treated your dentist should also be able to put you in touch with other patients who have had similar treatment.  Any work you have done will need to be replaced in the future.

What food should be avoided after teeth whitening?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. Good morning, Im just curiouse to know if there is any foods or drinks i shoul avoid after having teeth whitening with laser and how long should i avoid them for? i would like to know if smoking is ok or should it be avoided and for how long is so?,
A. After tooth whitening avoid anything that stains for as long as possible. In food & drik my test would be if you dropped it on your friends cream coloured carpet (red wine, curry, beetroot coke , ribena etc ) how worried would you be. Smoking is best avoided for lots of reasons , the more you smoke the faster the teeth will discolour ( just like before they could stain before the  whitening) Rob

Do whitening trays whiten front and back of teeth?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. Can you please tell me do whitening trays whiten the back of the teeth as well as the front asbehind my teeth are discoloured. Whitening trays or lazer which is most effective? thanx k,
A. My advice would be home bleaching trays as for long term results home bleaching is necessary.  The bleach will whiten all of your tooth given enough time
