Would six month smile braces take longer time?

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Q. Thank you for your very useful earlier advice. With regards to the ’six month smile’ braces – do they really only take six months or can they end up taking longer? How reliable are they long term, i.e. would my teeth move back afterwards? Many Thanks.

A. Thanks for your questions, the average treatment time for these braces is six months, although some cases can take a little longer. As with all orthodontic treatment, your teeth will naturally want to return to their pre brace position, and so it is necessary to wear a retainer on completion of the treatment. This can be a removable retainer to wear at night, or a fixed retainer, but your dentist will advise you of the best option for you. I hope this will help you.

Need a nice smile please suggest treatment

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Q. I had root canal on my bottom front tooth which was a grey colour, i since had my teeth bleached and was told to inject the tooth after the bleaching procedure using the trays and bleach provided. This didnt work and the tooth looks terrible compared to my other teeth which are white. What do you suggest? I just want a nice smile.

A. Thanks for your question, you may wish to consider having the tooth veneered. A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain which is made to fit over the front surface of the tooth, and can be used to improve the colour, shape, size and overall aesthetic appearance of a tooth or teeth. The veneer would be made to match the whitened shade of your other teeth, to give a uniform look to your smile. I hope this helps.

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Q. i think i have receeding gums,my top front tooth is getting longer then the rest, can it be fix with a nice smile?Or am i doomed!

A. Yes it can!  You may have gum disease but you may just need a brace to move your teeth into a more stable position – teeth keep on growing if they are not in a stable position

Need extensive makeover to my teeth

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Q. I’m 22 and my teeth are awful! I’m embarassed to smile, laugh and often get told to ‘cheer up’ because of my regular closed mouth expression. My teeth are discoloured, sensitive, and crooked. This is due to lack of dental care when I was a child. I regularly use whitening products, and sensitive toothpastes, I visit the dentist but just seem to have filling upon filling. I’m so scared of one of my front teeth completely falling out. I honestly feel like I would be happier with false teeth, which is a bit of a daunting prospect at the age of 22. Being a student, I cant afford cosmetic dentisty and even the financial plas seem to want £100+ a month, which just isnt an option for me. I don’t seem to have a local dentistry school, and even ones far away seem to have full waiting lists. I’ve considered using a student loan to go abroad to have ‘cheap’ dentistry work done but hav been advised this could make things even worse. What should I do?

A. Its very difficult to have extensive treatment on a budget. You might be able to get some done on the NHS which is usually cheaper than paying privately. You always take a risk when going abroad as often the cost isn’t that much different, especially as the pound is quite weak against the Euro at the moment. You might also have complications that require further visits abroad. I guess the best option would be to save up as much as possible and to start the treatment in stages perhaps using a finance plan to help spread the costs?

Can I have brace fitted in nhs and whats the cost?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Q. i am 29 and have just registered with a dentist after waiting for a few years,im interested in having a brace fitted as im starting to feel very wary of my teeth when i smile,Can it be done on nhs or will i have to go private? And at what cost?

A. Thanks for your questions, NHS Orthodontics treatment to adults is not usually available, however an enquiry to your local Primary Care Trust should be able to confirm this for you. There are many teeth straightening systems available privately, with some treatments taking as little as six weeks to acheive results and others which are virtually invisible. The costs for these treatments will vary between systems and practices, but I can tell you that straightening treatments at my practices start from £999. Many practices now have the facility to offer payment plans, such as interest free credit to help you spread the costs. I hope this helps.

Is there any possibility to extract as many teeth to hv avg smile?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Q. As an early teen I had chipped the top, front 6 of my teeth rollerblading. They felt loose for a while and had always bothered me the way they healed. It bothers me how my front teeth are displayed slightly misaligned to my left and with an overbite as well. The Army Dentist insisted on putting veneers over them. That never did anything to fix the misalignment problem of the front two top teeth being aligned under my nose. It seems the injury I must have suffered as a kid made the teeth grow in this way after they healed. I am disappointed and finished with the idea of trying to salvage my smile at this point in my life. I am wondering if you may be able to let me know if there is a possibility that there is a Dentist out there that would extract my front, top 6 teeth or as many as needed to have an average looking smile that is aligned under my nose. Thanks very much

A. if the teeth are healthy you should look into clear positioner orthodontics such as clearstep or invisalign

I have yellow teeth what can I do to get them presentable?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Q. i have extremely yellow teeth. i dont smoke, drink tea or coffe so i dont understand why my teeth should be so yellow. please could you tell me why this is happening and what i could do to get them a bit more presentable in other words whiter. please answer me as soon as possible because i need to start smiling with confidence thankyou.

A. The yellowness of your teeth is based on the proportion of enamel to dentine and the water content of the dentine.  A simpler way to treat this is to have your teeth professionally bleached by a dentist.  Treatment can take from 2 weeks to 6 months depending on the type of internal stain

A. You might consider invisalign.  This will greatly improve your smile but it may not be able to achieve the absolute ideal by your wedding.  However you could always use the invisalign aligners to bleach your teeth as well!  At Aviva we offer this as part of our invisalign treatment

I ve discoloured teeth can I still ve teeth whitened?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. Hiya, my teeth developed without the enamel being there when i was younger and i’ve been left with ugly discoloured teeth. Am i still able to have my teeth whitened?

A.

If you have amelogenesis imperfecta it is unlikely that bleaching will help.  You will need some type of porcelain restoration to replace your missing enamel

Do you have any opinions on the various teeth whitening systems?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. Hi there, My teeth have been yellow for as long as I can remember. (I first became aware when I was 11 or 12, I am now 44.) On and off over the years I have tried various home kits/toothpastes with no success, I have also been to a dentist and had the Britesmile treatment done approximately 3 years ago which also proved very disappointing. I have seriously considered having veneers (Lumineers) but one dentist suggested that I should try the Enlighten whitening system first as my teeth are fairly straight, its only the colour that lets them down. From this do you have any suggestions or opinions on the various whitening systems that may help me?

A. The main thing is time exposure to a low concentration of bleach.  This can take up to 6 months to get a reaonable result in heavily stained teeth effected by tetracycline antibiotics – I suspect that this is what has caused your teeth to be so stained.

My teeth are placed random can I ve veneers and fillings?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. Hello Dr Solanki, I have had a very hard emotional time over my bent teeth, I am finally approaching this issue to finally be able to smile normally! I have very bent teeth, I have all my teeth but they are slightly discoloured due to lack of brushing and I used to smoke for 7 years. I am very interested in having Veneers to make over my smile. As the most bent teeth are my two upper front, (they bend backwards about 90 degree’s out) are they too bent to have veneers? I looking for 8 veneers and fillings if needed. I am aware of the costs but am worried it will take a lot more than veneers to fix my nightmare teeth. I think it steams from my dentist at age 12 saying my teeth are placed like rubbish in a bin, random and not pleasent to look at. (yeah I know :-( ) Can you help me? Thank you

A. hi , firstly please do not worry, the first thing is to be seen for a consultation where a full assessment can be made and some realistic objectives decided. once this happens and you iike the sound of what can be then then the progression of the treatment should be second nature. i have done complexed cases and by the sound of your teeth i am sure there are thing which can be done to improve the aesthetics of the smile. hope this is helpful.
