I am 54, am i too old for orthodontic treatment and how much will it cost?

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011
Q.

I am 54 years old and have had a severe overbite all my life – my teeth always look dreadful and I hate having my photogrpah taken or having to smile when people are watching. I never had a chance to have orthodontic treatment – it didn’t happen when I was young in the same way it does now. Alos my teeth ache because my bite is so out of line.

Two questions

1 Is it possible to have orthodontic treatment at my age?
2 How much would it cost – this will probably prevent me having it done and I don’t suppose any of this gets done on NHS.

Any help appreciated.

My overbite is about 15mm

My front teeth Are crowned due to an accident in primary school, I am now 40, would I be able to get braces?

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011
Q.

my top front teeth are crowned due to an accident in y primary school years. I have a overbite (pretty large one) and I have never asked a dentist if i could use a brace to help the look it has made. I am now 40years and pay private (monthly plan). I see adults wearing a brace and it will not bother me at all to wear one. I was going to have 1 fitted when I was younger but my accident must have made it impossible as they needed caps and then crowns. Now though maybe there is a way around this problem?

After my braces were removed there was still a gap, what can be done to close this?

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011
Q.

Dear Dr. Riten
I choose you cause you have a great smile! A dentist with a great smile its a must!
When i was 20 years old, i had a incluse canine on the palate and the 1st “milk”canine didnt fell. Unfortunatly at that time they decided to take it off instead of tracking him to the place. So i dont have my upper left canine. I made a profile with the ortondontist years later cause it could fall eventualy..so we decided to use the braces, take the “milk canine” and a pre molar on the upper right side and arrange all teeths…after 2 and a half years, it turned nicely…EXCEPT…i moved to italy, and i finished the last year with braces here….they places my “pre molar” as a canine, but it doesnt has the exact size… there was a stage where it was but now i only have the splint do to maintainance after you take the braces off…and i have a gap !!! 🙁 i went to the dentist yeasterday and he said it CANT Be done to close that gap…!!! i saw so many videos online on cosmetic dentistry, i think maybe he is not an expert??? Should i put braces again? look another dentist who can use composite to close this gap? i want to smile again….
thank you! Best regards!

I want to straighten my teeth but I am worried that it will not be worth it as there is gum disease in my family, should I just get dentures instead?

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011
Q.

My dad had pyaria. His teeth were perfect but had to have them removed and received dentures because of disease. My gums have been receeding badly for years. I can see the roots of my teeth. Last dentist appt they did a measuring of gum to bone. Mine were not good. For two weeks now I’ve been tasting “infection”. Best word I can think of to describe. I rince with peroxide but there you have it. I have very good oral hygiene habits but i was told I have “soft” teeth as well as deep grooves. All back teeth have fillings. I would like to have teeth straighter but afraid to put money into it if I’m going to loose my teeth anyway. I’m basicaaly wondering if I should just go ahead and get dentures.

Q.

hi i was wondering if you could help, basically when i was 14 i was referred to the royal london hospital for an operation on my jaw to improve my teeth alignment as braces wasnt going to correct this. it was an 18 month waiting list and being 14 i just wanted braces. however now im 19 and after years of authordontic treatment my teeth are still not aligned, i went to a private dentist in colchester to see if he could help, he said that i do need the operation but i need to request my dental notes from the hospital in london as without this he cant refer me to the hospital in colchester. ive tried to request the notes but they said they dont have any records on their system of me. is there anything i can do about this thank yo.u
