I have had infections after poor root canal treatment

Sunday, August 24th, 2008
Q.
Hi. I have been having consultations with a dentist re having a problem root (poor root canal treatment many years ago, since infected on the side, now apparently perforated) removed and replaced with an implant. However, I am a bit concerned and would appreciate some advice. The dentist (private) advertises implants as a service, but despite my requests, after two one hour consultations has been unable to show me photos of a completed implant (apparently they were all held on a computer and got lost) and keeps evading my questions on how many implants they have done by just telling me that he devotes two days a week to implant work of some description (the practice is based in a small town in a not overly affluent part of the country). The only ‘evidence’ available to me so far is the mobile phone no. of a patient who has recently had the implant placed (the crown is not in situ yet). I need to get the tooth removed soon as I can feel the infection starting to return, but am concerned as to whether I would be making the right decision in allowing this dentist to remove the tooth. Could you give me any advice please?

Ive had bad dentistry and adult missing teeth

Friday, August 15th, 2008
Q.
Having had a history of both bad dentistry and problems with my teeth (ie adult teeth missing) I now have none of my upper back teeth and a couple of back teeth missing from my lower mouth. I have had dentures made for the upper mouth but due to constant gagging I have not been able to wear this, despite my dentist making several alterations. I was then advised that implants may be the solution but as I have read, smokers are not advised to have this treatment (I am currently giving up). And I feel that as I am an NHS patient then implants will not be a viable option anyway. I wondered if there is any solution to my problem as I am now experiencing problems with my remaining teeth as they are put under more use and strain. Having other members of the family with similar problems it appears that an hereditory condition that has meant adult teeth are missing has now been identified with both of my children. However, the children are under the care of an orthadontist and so I am hopeful they will not experience the issues I have. I really would like to recieve any information that will help me as now the gaps are noticable when I smile etc and have had a knock on effect to my own confidence as well as my facial features. I am 44 years of age.

What is the cost of replacing all my teeth with false teeth

Thursday, August 14th, 2008
Q.
I have not been to a dentist for the last 20 years as I had a very bad experience as a child and have been afraid to go back since. I know that my teeth are in a very bad condition. I was wondering whether I would be able to have all my teeth removed and have false teeth to replace them all and if so then how much would this cost?

i have had many fillings on my tooth would an implant be better

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008
Q.
Hi doctor, I have had a five year ongoing saga with one tooth (lower jaw third from back). I had a gold filing for over ten years untill it needed replacing. It was replaced with a white filing which sensitized the tooth. A root filing was done but some of the root was left in which resulted in numerous visits to dentist and dental hospital till discovered and removed. A white inlay was applied which was too high, when removed the tooth had fractured. All that is now left is the front wall of the tooth. A new white inlay was fitted , which has come out twice this year. I feel unable to eat normally on this side. I finally came to terms with having the tooth out but when I discussed this with my dentist he suggests just filing it! This has been a lenthly and expensive time. I am now considering my options and wondered about an implant as my other teeth are in good condition. I would very much appreciate an experts opinion.

Sucking my thumb has ruined my teeth

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008
Q.
I use to suck my thumb growing up and as a result it looks as if my front teeth are missing. What can I do to have the smile I’ve never had?
