Can I hv denture fitted by having most of the teeth pulled?

Monday, October 19th, 2009
Q.
Hi Dr Caplan, My front left tooth has gone very crooked and exposed a large part of the root and is extremely loose, the 3 teeth to the left of that are missing and i wear a bridge which has contributed to the twisting, the next 3 teeth are not in good condition and the gum has receeded. on the right side my front tooth is chipped, the next 2 teeth are slightly longer and the gum is receeding, the molars on the right are not bad but there are just gaps and 1 is missing. would it be better to have most of the teeth pulled and a denture fitted as there are only about 8 teeth on my upper jaw and most are not up to the job. could you give me advice and a rough estimate of cost. I live in North London, not too far from St Albans. Many Thanks

My question is, no confidence in my own teeth when I eat, keep thinking the crowns will fall out, and hate having the dentures, but they do look better when I smile, what woul you suggest? I woul like a nice smile with even teeth and no gaps…… help

Do you need to wear dentures before exploring the options of implant

Q.
Hi, I have had my lower teeth extracted but am not getting along with the temprary dentures provided. Do you need to be an established denture wearer before exploring the option of fixed implant dentures?

I need a stable lip support to enable me to play brass band pls advice

Saturday, October 17th, 2009
Q.
I used to be a private patient but can no longer afford this due to life changes. I am not registered as an NHS patient, have not seen a dentist in many years and dont know what to do about accessing treatment and advice. I had most of my upper teeth removed a few years ago after I suffered tooth loss through failing crowns and bridgework. My teeth were replaced by a partial but almost complete deture I have two teeth remaining in my upper jaw one is a crown on one of my front teeth and one is a molar that is colapsing and will need extraction. I am reasonably sure I am suffering bone loss from the upper jaw as the denture now sits below the level of the crown. The denture is and has always been a poor fit and I reline this on a regular basis to stop it falling out all the time. Since having the denture fitted I have become very introverted and dont socialise much. My speach is not as clear as it was and this is affecing me in work. I think this is because I use my top lip to hold the denture in place as I am very embarrassed when it drops. I used to play a brass instrument but a combination of wearing the denture and other medical conditions stopped me doing this. Brass band playing was one of the most uplifting experiences I had to look forward to and without it I often feel dipressed. I have tryed to play but find my denture is too unstable to allow me to play with any degree of satisfaction. I had heart by pass surgery last year and dont know if my heart condition would preclude any sort of treatment. I was wondering if there was any way of providing stable lip support needed to enable me to play. I think this would help my mental and physical welbeing if I could get back into this. I hope you can give me some advice.

Can I hv crowns replaced instead of dentures Plz advice

Thursday, October 15th, 2009
Q.
I have had a severe fear of the dentist after having a terrible experience around 10 years ago. Unfortunately in this time my teeth have gotten in to very bad condition, which I am really embarrassed about. After my front crown got caught at a dancing competition and broke, I decided I needed to take action and so I visited the local dentist. He devised a plan for me and I am currently on the waiting list to have the necessary teeth removed at the hospital and then all the fillings and treatment I need completing. I was however horrified with his advice to have my two front crowns replaced with dentures. I am 25 years old and devastated with this suggestion! There are crowns on my two front teeth at the moment(granted one is cracked) and I am in no pain. If I pay privately can I choose to have the crowns replaced? I understand that ultimately the dentists advice may be correct, however, I at least want to try! I would really appreciate your help, as I am so upset! Thank you in advance!

Is there any alternative to denture as I find it very painful?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009
Q.
I had cosmetic dentistry done many years ago, which included replacing my middle four front teeth (top) with crowns. One was knocked loose and subsquently I have had it removed as it was apparently so small that there was nothing for crown to hold on to. I am now using a temp denture, however a couple of things I would appreciate your advice on: 1) is there any alternative to temp denture, only I find it very painful after a while, and it looks very ugly with a thick pink plastic rim around the tooth, that does not match my gum and looks very prominent. 2) I have been diagnosed with gum disease around these crowns, and am desperately trying to work on this, but is teh denture now causing irritation to gums, as they not getting any better (p.s. gum disease appears to be around teh crowns only) I am very depressed about this situation and would give anything to be able to smile again, Many Thanks
