My Teeth Have Gone Black After A Root Canal Making My Veneers Discoloured. Is This A Common Problem And How Can It Be Resolved?

Monday, January 27th, 2014
Q.

Hi. Just over 2 years ago I had a smile makeover at my local dentist. This involved teeth whitening first and then 6 upper veneers and 3 lower. I had to have root canal on 3 or 4 of the teeth because my dentist advised me they had to file the original tooth close to the nerve.
After 2 years I have noticed 2 have started to go black. In my opinion it’s the tooth behind that is black and it is starting to show through the veneers making the veneer seem darker than the others.
I have been to see my dentist and she advises nothing is wrong and the only thing she could do if I was still worried would be to drill the veneers off and smear white cement over the original tooth and replace with a new veneer at my expense of course!
Is this a common problem and how can it be resolved?
Do teeth tend to go black once root canal has occurred?
I can send a picture if that will help explain my issues. Thanks.

I Don’t Like My Temporary Veneers And I Don’t Know If My Permanent Ones Will Turn Out Okay. Will The Permanent Ones Be Bulky?

Monday, January 20th, 2014
Q.

I just got 6 temporary veneers on my front teeth. I’m not happy as they all had gaps and they look so fake and bulky. They look like a denture to me or a mouth piece you wear for sports. I can barely talk and I forget about eating. I feel like a horse and look like one as well. They make me have a lot of saliva and my teeth look big and plastic. Will my permanent teeth look like this? My front teeth feel like I’m buck toothed and can’t talk very well. Is this really normal? I have already went back to the dentist after one day and they say I won’t have this issue with permanent veneers, they said it’s because I have one piece on my front teeth, I just don’t know what to believe and I’m stressed out already.

I Would Like A Fast Solution To Bring Back My Confidence. Would I Be Suitable For Veneers Or A Snap On Smile?

Monday, January 20th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore, I need some advice. I am currently considering snap or clip on veneers but I think my teeth are too crooked and my fang tooth is very large. I’ve also go some overcrowding so my front teeth are so out of place and I can’t even floss. Can anybody have veneers or do they need to be in a have decent shape. I can’t afford to have braces or Invisalign and I really need a quick fix as the look of them does affect my confidence. I look forward to your advice and I hope you can help me. Thank you.

I Have A Denture And I’m Thinking About Getting Veneers. Or Is There Another Procedure That I Could Have To Get The Smile I Always Wanted?

Friday, January 17th, 2014
Q.

Hello,
I have a denture in my top row of teeth at the front and was thinking about veneers. Is it possible to have veneers even though there is no tooth there? How much roughly would it cost for me to have veneers? Or is there another procedure that I could have to get the smile I always wanted? What is the length of the procedure? I have already inquired about an implant but I had a scan and it revealed that their is not enough bone for me to have the implant.

Thanks.

My NHS Are Gradually Wearing Thin. Would I Qualify For NHS Veneers Again If They Came Off?

Thursday, January 16th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Mark Hughes, I knocked my front teeth out at a young age which resulted in getting lots of dental work, finishing with NHS veneers placed on four of my front teeth (my front teeth being the teeth next to the original front teeth and the fang teeth being next to the current front teeth). I think they are composite veneers as they are wearing gradually. I had them for about eight years. I’m concerned about how they might be underneath if they were to come off as I can’t remember the preparation involved and I’m not sure of my options, I been told that I can only get them private or have them stuck back on if they were to fall off or crowned (crowns scare me a bit as I already have small natural teeth) Would I qualify for NHS veneers again if they came off?

I Don’t Want To Lose My Front Tooth And Would Need It Replaced. Could I Be Referred To A Dental Hospital?

Friday, January 10th, 2014
Q.

Hi. I have okay teeth but quite a few with mercury filling, some missing due to pregnancy (This is over 17 years ago) and now I feel I may lose a front one. I have a face to face job role which is why I would like to know if you could recommend or if possible either free or very low cost veneers done by a student. I have had my front top two redone as the enamel was eroding them. I am on a low income but I am willing to contribute. I am finding it difficult to find a dentist and feel for me to keep my teeth this is my only option. I do not like to ask but I also do not want to not smile again. Please let me know if you can help. Thanks.

Can Veneers Or Crowns Correct A Severe Overjet? I Don’t Want Braces As I’m Too Old.

Thursday, January 9th, 2014
Q.

Hi, I was wondering if veneers or crowns can correct a severe overjet? I really do not want to wear braces for 2 years as I feel I’m too old and will be getting married later this year. I am willing to have my teeth ground drastically if that’s what it takes to correct this overjet. I’ve researched that jaw surgery may be an option as well but I am worried this will affect my facial profile. Although my main focus is to straighten my top teeth, I would also consider putting veneers on my bottom teeth to reduce the overjet as well.

I Have Amelogenesis Imperfecta And My NHS Veneers Are Forever Breaking. What Can I Do?

Wednesday, January 8th, 2014
Q.

I’m 20 years old and I have amelogenesis impecfecta. When I was 16 my dentist at a dental hospital who said I would get veneers when I was 18 when my jaw had functioned properly, due to that dentist leaving and me having a new one I am now been told I will not get veneers on the NHS, I am really unhappy with my teeth. Although over the year I have had a lot of work done on my teeth it’s not forever, the work that’s been done is forever breaking. Just wondering what I can do? As I can’t afford to pay thousands. Thanks.

My New Veneers Look Darker Than My Bottom Teeth In Natural Light, What Can I Do To Match Them Up?

Tuesday, January 7th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark, what steps would you expect a cosmetic dentist to take to ensure a match to whitened teeth when replacing old veneers on other surrounding teeth? I had very yellow bottom teeth lightened successfully with Enlighten. After the whitening I got new veneers on my top teeth but my new veneers are actually darker than my natural bottom teeth. I only noticed when I got home and looked in a mirror in natural light. I contacted my dentist right away but he says he is not responsible and I must pay to replace if I’m not happy. I only got the chance to check them in a poorly lit mirror in the surgery with artificial lighting and couldn’t bare my teeth properly as my mouth was so numb. I never thought they could end up darker than my natural teeth and I trusted my dentist when he said they were a good match to my natural teeth. He also gave me some more Enlighten to try and lighten the tooth under the veneer from the back of the teeth which seems unlikely to work. I would really appreciate some advise on this as my dentist is just saying I should live with it or to get them redone.
Kind regards.

I’ve Had Different Types Of Veneers Fitted Over The Years Which Keep Falling Off. Why Is This Happening?

Monday, December 23rd, 2013
Q.

Hello.
On my next to front tooth I had a porcelain veneer which only lasted five years. It fell off and I swallowed it! My dentist fitted a composite veneer on an emergency visit which lasted for only 2 years. That fell off and went down the sink. I then had another composite the next day as an emergency which is on now and is horrible. I follow a really good hygiene programme and have visited the dentist every 6 months since the age of 3. I am now 52. Why do they keep falling off? Whatever type I have? I am reluctant to have a high cost porcelain veneer fitted as the fear of losing it is probable. Thank you in anticipation.
