Can I have lumineers fitted to existing crowns?

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011
Q.

Hello, I have three crowns on the top and one on the bottom. I am a young 61 year old and I noticed in my holiday photos that my teeth look yellow. Looking in the mirror confirms this.
I want Lumineer veneers because I dont think I could go through the invasive work required for normal veneers. I went to see a local cosmetic dentist who recommended whitening and replacing the crowns which have given me no trouble at all in all the years I have had them.

I really do want veneers but the work involved seems excessive so I want to have lumineers.

My question is can you confirm that lumineers can be fitted to crowns. The dentist I spoke about said this was news to him! Thank you.

Do I need my crown removed for root canal treatment?

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011
Q.

When I was about 12 years old, I broke my front tooth playing. So, my dentist placed a temp cap because I also was wearing braces. once my correction was complete (when I was 16 or so), she replaced my cap with a ceramic cap (no root canal). Now I am 25 and during one of my regular check up, a different dentist suggested that I get a root canal treatment and then have a ceramic cap placed. My question is, since it is my front tooth, I am very paranoid about any treatment (coz it affects my looks) and wanted to know if a root canal and a ceramic cap will be a life long solution…are there any drawbacks?

I don’t trust my sons dentist, should I get a second opinion?

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011
Q.

My son is 19 mons. when his two frunt teeth come in inverted. I took him to the dentest she said that he needed to have filled and caps on, and that his two roots were growing into one. He was about 15 mon when we went in and put him under she told me that this was something that had to be done. She made him his own caps. He came out doing ok and well he didnt look to bad.we went back to see her about 6 month later and he said that everything was good! Well about a month or little longer his mouth was swolen he was not eating and it was causing him pain. We went back to that some doctor and she said that he has gotton some food up in his teeth/ gum and i caused it to get infected. So, today we went back to the hospitle and he filled his teeth down to the nerv and put the caps on that had that have the silver backing. When he came out he was in pain she waid that she could not get thim even. Im wondering if any of this even needed to be done if she was just wanted the money. Its so much and he is so little. If you could pleace help me and my son i dont want to have to go throu more with this Dr if i cant trust her. Ifeel like i put my child all through this and i dont even know if he needed it thank you so much for your time.

Can I keep my crowns when I have the rest of my teeth fixed?

Monday, February 21st, 2011
Q.

Dear Dr Tennet,
I would like to improve my smile. I currently have 2 crowns (2 front teeth) which I had after a see-saw accident which were recently changed in Sweden (June 2009). They look great and I would like to keep them. The teeth either side of them I would like to be improved. My dentist in Sweden will not do this as it is for cosmetic purposes therefore I will need to go elsewhere. Will the new practice need to change the front 2 teeth or do you think it will be possible to leave them as I find it to be uneccessary due to cost and that I love the look of them already?
My second question is I have the option to have these improvements in either London or Portugal – from a cost / technology / qualified point of view which do you think would be the best option for me?
I appreciate you help with my questions very much.
Kindest Regards,

Is a crown really needed after a root canal?

Friday, February 18th, 2011
Q.

Hi! I got question about root canal treatment. I work as a dental nurse(trainee for now) so i don’t know everything yet. My husband required root cana treatment for upper 6, that’s fine, but my question is will he need the crown on top of this toot,my dentis said that this is neccesary ,because the toof is dead and will be more brittle…I read on the forum that the crown is neccesay when tooth haven’t got big filling. now when i work as a dental nurse I’ve seen few cases, when the patient with the crown had decay under the crown. So finally question: is the crown is always needed?? thank you DR Hughes

Can you reshape a gold crown?

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011
Q.

I recently got a gold alloy crown fitted on one of my tooth. When closing the jaw, it wasn’t very comfortable as the crown was too high. So the dentist used one of the instruments to heat the top of the crown and adjust the height.

On returning home, the surface of the crown looks smooth on the sides but on the top it looks rough which I guess is due to manual adjustment.

My understanding was that the height of the tooth is reduced so that the crown fits over it and is in level with the neighbouring teeth.

My concern is that heating the top of the crown might have created a tiny microscopic hole that might over time lead to bacteria seeping in.

Is it common procedure to reshape the gold crowns?

Can you detail the treatment I need because of decay under my crown?

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011
Q.

I had a crown put in 3 years ago and just recently found out that there is a lot of decay underneath it. I was wondering why it would be decayed since I thought the tooth was cleaned out before the procedure to avoid that complication. I must admit I have not been seeing a dentist regularly but now that I have Insurance again I would like know what the best option would be (the dentist also has to pull the tooth beside it).
