my root canal broke and i had to get my tooth pulled out

Sunday, September 14th, 2008
Q.
Hi Dr. Caplan, I had a root canal done a few months back, and within 3 weeks of getting it done, it broke, and I had to get my tooth pulled. Is this normal? Is my dentist imcompetent or does this happen often? I was really upset about it, and now I’m missing a tooth on my top right side, it’s hard to eat without it on that side. Then he did 4 more root canals without telling me to get a crown right away, and another one broke, and I had to get the tooth pulled. 2 others broke but luckily my teeth are still there, but not for long if I don’t get my caps done. What do you suggest I do? Do I switch dentists? Do I sue? Should he be capping them right away? Please let me know what to do, I’m sure I’ve spent over $20,000 over the past 2 years and I don’t know why I’m having so many issues with my teeth, that I’ve NEVER had in my life. And, I absolutely do not want to lose any more teeth, it’s embarassing, and painful. Thanks

broken tooth crowns and pain

Sunday, September 14th, 2008
Q.
On the top left side I believe my dentist said its tooth # 13, I broke and they had to remove the tooth. He told me that an implant wouldn’t be necessary and that best opt would be a bridge. He basically told me that he would shave the tooth behind, crown it and hook on the fake tooth in the missing spot. First time around, I had pain eating on my left side and I couldn’t sleep as I noticed my lower jaw was shifting adding pressure to my front top teeth. I went back and they had to redo the impression, said my bit was off. I found out that a bridge consisted of 3 teeth (crown the tooth behind and in front of missing tooth). I have no idea why he only shaved back tooth as I am still having problems. I’m suppose to go back tomorrow as I am having problems with the temps that were placed in. Hurts to eat on left side and again, can’t sleep on side as my lower jaw slides. What do you think is the problem? The tooth was pulled out last month…is it too late for me to get an implant and have them just crown the tooth they shaved down? I already paid $675 and still in pain. He told me that I may need a root canal but I think he messed up somewhere. How can you tell me you are going to give me a bridge and only shave one tooth? I now regret it since I just gave up a good tooth!

can in implnt be used for cracked teeth

Thursday, September 11th, 2008
Q.
I’m 27 and I’ve had problems with my teeth for as-long as I can remember, especially with my bottom back teeth on either side. The back three on each side have pretty much cracked and fallen apart and one on each side have been removed, one for spacing reasons and one due to an infection. I do have a slight embrarssment about them and it’s starting to affect my confidence in everyday life. I’ve booked in to an NHS dentist for October but I was wondering what would be the best course of action for them. I really don’t want any plates or dentures and I’m hoping the existing teeth can be crowned and bridged together with an implant in the middle, (on each side). Would that be the best result I could hope for? Many thanks.

I have chipped both my front teeth as a child

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008
Q.
Dr Caplan I have chipped both my front teeth as a child and have been offered by my dentist when i was pregnant to have them both crowned although i was quite happy with the way my teeth looked with what i think were bridges i agreed to it because he had said that these crowns would last a life time. I have been unhappy with my teeth since they are to large compared with my other teeth and have a different colouring which is very noticable when i smile. i now am always contious of this when i smile. i have asked my dentist if i could have them replaced but he advises that it isnt a good idea because the part of my teeth thats my own will have to be shaped again i will end up with even less of my own teeth. My question is if this is the case and what consequences could i face if i still want to go ahead and have them changed. the other question i have is how do i find out which dentistry is a dentistry with a good reputation?

front teeth have been knocked and cracked

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008
Q.
My son has just had an accident on his bike and knocked his front teeth. His two front teeth have cracked all the way to the gum. The dentist has said that one of his front teeth will have to come out more than likley. What would be the best solution considering he is only 11 years old? Will he be able to have implants fitted on the nhs?

my tooth is grey after i was headbutted

Monday, September 8th, 2008
Q.
Hi, I’m 25 and have generally healthy teeth and gums. About 12 years ago I was headbutted in the mouth and my upper right front tooth. It went dark grey, but then rectified itself and went white again. I’ve never had normal sensation in the tooth, and recently it kept feeling uncomfortable, hot and big. My dentist tried root canal surgery which failed as the canal was too small, so I had an apisectomy. My dentist found evidence of chronic infection which may have accounted for my symptoms. That was about 4 months ago, and now it’s starting to feel strange again. It’s also discoloured (yellowy) from the inside. I was wondering if you thought the best thing at this point would be to remove the tooth and have an implant? I’ve been thinking about this, and the possibility of having my other front teeth veneered to match the colour and give me a nice smile! I am keen to retain the general appearance of my teeth, including the small gap between my front teeth. Also I don’t want to leave it too long if there is a risk of chronic infection damaging the bone which would house the implant. Could you give me some advice and a rough idea of cost? I live in North Yorkshire but wouldn’t mind travelling for a consultation. Thanks so much 🙂

My first molar is filled and broken

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008
Q.
My first molar on the bottom right hand side of my mouth is heeavily filled and has broken. My dentist has examined it and done a temporary fix but has given me 2 options, to have a crown fitted, but has said because there is so little of the tooth itself left root is intact the crown would be quite brittle as their is very little tooth to attach the crown to, so it may fail and i may have to have the tooth out anyway. The second is to have the tooth out and be left with a gap, which i dont feel will improve my smile. Are you able to say how likely the crown is to fail, and are there any other options.
