Is It Best To Shorten Or Lengthen My Front Teeth To Have Them Level?

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes, I have always had one tooth slightly longer than the other at the front and I am not very comfortable smiling because of it and I’m looking at ways of fixing it. What is the best way to fix this? Can I have this levelled out or a bit added to the shorter one? I am worried that if I have it shortened it might discolour and even eventually fall out, Could this happen? How much would a treatment like this cost or would you advise to leave it as it is? Thank you for your time.

Why Won’t My NHS Dentist Provide My 14-Year-Old With Dental Veneers?

Wednesday, July 31st, 2013
Q.

My 14 year old daughter has very dark brown markings and fluoride markings on all her teeth due to being infected as a child by fluoride in the water. She has already had 2 composites placed on her front 2 teeth in 2007 and has just completed finished her fixed orthodontics. Our dentist has said she isn’t allowed to get veneers on all her teeth on the NHS but the orthodontist has said she must have these dealt with and veneers is the only option. She has tried many other treatments for years which haven’t worked. Where do i stand legally regarding having veneers fitted on all her badly affected teeth on the NHS? Surely they can do something about this, it isn’t her fault that her teeth look like this. Thank you for your time.

How Would I Close Up The Gap Between My Front Teeth?

Friday, June 28th, 2013
Q.

hello, i have pretty straight nice teeth with abit of an overbite and a small gap between my front two teeth. im not really fussed about my overbite but i was just wondering what sort of price i would be looking at to close up my gap. as i am only 20 years old and when i was younger i couldn’t get it through the NHS or the royal marines, i was also wondering if it could be paid monthly instead of a one off cheque?  i understand that some private cosmetic practices do offer financial plans so am intrigued as to how they work and in what amounts. hope you can advise me. hank you.

I Sucked My Thumb Until The Age Of 12, What’s The Cheapest Way I Can Get My Teeth Fixed?

Wednesday, June 19th, 2013
Q.

Hi Andrew. I am writing to you in order to seek some advice. I am very embarrassed to admit that I sucked my thumb day and night from being a baby to age 12. Now my teeth are crooked and arched and I am regularly told that I have “vampire teeth” because my canines stick out. I have lost a lot of confidence because of this and cannot smile in pictures. I am a teenager and have been refused help by my dentist because the problem is cosmetic. Please can you advise me on the best procedures for my case and hopefully, cheap ones also, preferably due to my current situation with money. I would also like to know if my teeth will gradually set straight again over time as well? Or would this only come about with the help of brace treatment for example?Thank you for taking your time to read this in advance.

My Receding Gums And Old Veneers Have Exposed My Teeth, Can I Get A Filler Put In?

Friday, June 7th, 2013
Q.

I have veneers on my front teeth for about 15 years. My gums are receding and now you can see my natural teeth from my veneer to my gums. My dentist already checked my gums. It is from brushing to hard. My question is, can i get filler put in on the top of my veneers to the gums so you can’t see my natural teeth. I really don’t want to replace my veneers at this time. I just want the space gone when a smile real big, your can see my natural teeth where my gums are receding. The gums are only receding on the two front teeth where the veneers are. I go to my dentist regularly and she was the one who has done my veneers.

Which Type And Strength Of Tooth Whitening Formulas Can Be Used At Home?

Monday, April 15th, 2013
Q.

I am seeing conflicting information on teeth whitening from different places and the solutions strengths available vary greatly. I have seen 8-38% strengths available on a number of websites and am unsure what is best. I want to find a solution/strength that is safe and effective.

What levels (%) of carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide whitening a gels are considered safe for use?

I have read that carbamide peroxide is used for home whitening and hydrogen peroxide is used at the dentist. Is there any reason hydrogen peroxide couldn’t be used at home?

Thanks.

Can I Discuss An Extended Project Question On Cosmetic Dentistry With An Industry Expert?

Thursday, March 28th, 2013
Q.

Dear Sir,I am currently studying for my A-Levels at Woodhouse Sixth Form College in London. For my A-Levels I have taken biology, chemistry, psychology and math, and I am hoping to pursue a career in dentistry once I have completed my A-Levels As an extracurricular activity I have taken up an Extended Project Qualification. The EPQ provides an additional AS-Level, and can be based on any area that an individual chooses to explore. I have based my Extended Project on cosmetic dentistry, and the question I am investigating is: does the increase in cosmetic dentistry reflect todays image conscious society? I would be grateful if you could provide your opinion on this question. This would be much appreciated. Thank You Regards,

How expensive would enamel crowns be for my five year old?

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013
Q.

My daughter, 5, has several silver crowns on her bottom molars. Is it costly to have them replaced with enamel crowns, or is there dental paint for them? She has two on each side and I don’t like the way they look. I know they are just baby teeth, but I do not want her to grow up with all this dental work in her mouth. Her dentist says that the enamel did not form properly around her teeth and that her whole mouth may need to be capped.

Dead nerve has turned my tooth grey; can you help?

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013
Q.

Hi,

I recently had an abcess and had to undergo root canal treatment, as well as some treatment on my front tooth where the abcess started from.

However the nerve had to be ‘killed’ and now my front tooth has grey areas where my gum is.
Obviously I would like the tooth to be as white as the other one but as it is a ‘dead’ tooth, is this possible without visiting a dentist?

I would like to be recommended some treatment to remove the grey area, hopefully you can advise.

Thanks.
