My Mother’s Tooth Has Broken at the Gum Line. Should She Have Treatment?

Friday, October 2nd, 2015
Q.

My mother, who is 95 (and by the way her maiden is Hughes!) had a lower tooth of her six remaining front teeth break off at the gum line.
She is not in any pain and part of the dentin is seen in the center of where the crown was and not much redness or damage.
My question is:  Because she has Alzheimer’s and is 95, would it be better to let the gum tissue grow over the hole left if it can, instead of pulling it and causing perhaps unnecessary trauma or worse to my mom’s health?

Would a Bridge Solve My Dental Problems?

Thursday, September 24th, 2015
Q.

I have six upper front crowns due to tetracycline staining. They are four years old. One of them has completely broken including the tooth. The others will probably follow suit so I wanted to have all six teeth removed and have a bridge fitted so I no longer have to worry about the next expensive disaster. Embarrassment too. Please tell me this is reasonable. I am 51 and allergic to several dental bonding agents too.

Can I Get Dental Help From the NHS or Will I Need to Go Private?

Thursday, September 24th, 2015
Q.

I had an eating disorder for many years and now my front teeth are very worn and sensitive. They now look more like fangs than teeth due to vomiting and brushing my teeth straight after. Do the NHS help with cosmetic dentistry in cases like mine or would I have to go private and what would the cost be? I have had to have three back teeth removed in the past not because they had rotten, more that the small holes caused by acid caused a great deal of pain. Now I no longer feel like I can smile, I don’t like people to see my front teeth.

How Much Would Teeth Whitening and Six Crowns Cost?

Thursday, September 24th, 2015
Q.

Hi there,

I am looking to get overall teeth whitening and then 6 crowns fitted to my upper row of teeth. I am researching at the moment and wondered if you could help me understand what kind of price to expect? So far I have a quote for £5,500 but I think this seems very high so wanted to get some other opinions. Also, is there anywhere you recommend for this treatment in the Godalming area?

Thanks.

Can A Person with Epilepsy Have Dental Implants?

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015
Q.

Hello. My dad is epileptic and we wanted to know if he can have the screw-in teeth? His teeth are very bad and he has gum disease and some teeth missing. He is very concerned about his teeth and his grandchildren always point it out to him. Is there anything that can be done? It is through no fault of his own as he brushes and flosses his teeth twice a day. It is really getting him down, there must be something that can be done surly?

What Advice Can You Give Me Following a Bad Dental Implants Experience?

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015
Q.

Hi there. I had a maxillary posterior 3 tooth bridge partly taken out in January this year due to the back abutment (2nd molar) decaying despite attending hygienist sessions. The bridge was partly cut off along with the pontic and the other abutment tooth (root filled). My premolar tooth remains as a single crown. After 3 opinions from dentists who offer dental implants I chose the dentist who felt I didn’t need a bone graft and could install a short fat implant (Osteocare Mazi Z Flat end 4.5mm x 8mm) where the pontic had been and an Osteocare Mazi Z flat end 12mm x 5.5mm to replace my 2nd (back tooth) molar. He seemed confident and these were both placed in June this year. No detailed aftercare was provided, no follow up appointment and 3 weeks after the crown and post on the shorter implant fell out. I was appalled as I have paid this dentist over £4000 for his “expertise”. I went back immediately and now he wants to remove the last part of the original bridge and remove the tooth that I paid the same practice £800 for 2 years ago to provide a root filling. I don’t really feel comfortable with the same dentist now and have looked into the whole way this has been handled. The dentist I believe is about 60 years old and I noticed early on his hands trembled which was not reassuring. Plus why didn’t he assess my bone height and quality before going ahead with treatment? I was given no sinus lift or bone graft and now I am worried that the back implant may not last in the long term. He wants to give me an implant bridge (3 tooth on 2 implants) but I would rather have separate teeth. This was why I wanted implants originally and saved my money accordingly. I am due to have my premolar extracted in October but all I really want is to have a refund and go to someone who is going to do a proper assessment of that part of my jaw, which I understand is the most challenging area to place implants, and keep me fully informed of what he or she is going to do and a comprehensive aftercare programme which I believe is key to successful implants. What advice can you give me?

How Can I Realign Two Lateral Incisors Following Brace Treatment?

Thursday, September 10th, 2015
Q.

Hello, I had braces from the age of 15 until 17, having them taken off at the end of 2012. The results were very good and my teeth were very straight. I wore my retainer and complied for the first year or so and then lost my retainer accidentally. My two lateral incisors started to move back slightly, more on the left side than on the right. I then found my retainer and tried to wear it again to try to move them back in line but the retainers no longer fit. The retainers are gone again and I cannot find them anywhere. I know it is too late to get a replacement seeing as I got my braces taken off nearly 3 years ago. I would like to realign the two incisors as the rest of my teeth are still straight. I can’t imagine I would need any complicated treatment but wanted some advice on what would be the best option. Would veneers be the best or an invisible brace? Or a removable plate? Thank you.

Should My Tooth Still Be Sore 5 Days After Root Canal Treatment?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015
Q.

I had a root canal done by my NHS dentist and 2 weeks later it was still bothering me. I then went to see a specialist endodontist who performed another root canal procedure (this time taking 2 hours and using a microscope and other specialist equipment). This was 5 days ago. I am able to bite down and eat on this tooth.  It is not sensitive to hot or cold but I would describe it as still aching on and off during the day. I would describe it as being generally sore. Is this normal and can it take a while for the tooth to settle after having all this work carried out on it? I haven’t had the crown put on yet and just have a temporary filling.

Are There Any Gum Reconstruction Options to Restore Smile Aesthetics?

Thursday, August 27th, 2015
Q.

Hello. I have advanced periodontitis with some bone loss and gum recession. I’ve been reading a lot about LANAP. I’m petrified of scaling and planing and of losing more gum line. My first question is how do I find a certified dentist who performs LANAP? I live in Oxfordshire but can travel, I cannot risk being “ripped off” in any way and want to do my research well. Secondly are there options for bone / gum reconstruction to restore the aesthetics of my smile that I now hide away? Thank you for any advice. Kindest regards.

Can I Use Regenerate Toothpaste on a Long-Term Basis?

Thursday, August 27th, 2015
Q.

Dear Doctor Mark, I tried using a new toothpaste called Regenerate as I tend to drink too many acidic drinks and was surprised to find it cured my sensitivity. Is it ok to use the toothpaste long term or should you alternate it with normal toothpaste? Also are there any issues about using mouthwash when using this product, i.e. will it interact or undo some of the benefit? Sorry if my questions are not very complex, but my dentist did not know. Thank you.
