Lower right teeth pain, any advice?

Friday, March 19th, 2010
Q. Hi there, I have recently been experiencing alot of pain coming from my lower right teeth, I went to dentist who said it could be exposed dentin and to use sensodene and leave it on before I go to sleep. However the tooth is now painful when I bite on it too, can this happen when dentin is exposed or is it possible this is something different? Thank-you for your time.,
A. Thanks for your question, If you are still experiencing pain despite the use of the Sensodyne, i would recommend that you revisit your dentist to have the teeth checked to rule out any other causes, and hopefully get you out of pain. Kindest Regards. Dr Kailesh Solanki

Any treatment available for receeding gums?

Friday, March 19th, 2010
Q. I have receding gums in the lower front region of my mouth, it makes me very self concious about my smile, is there anything that can be done about this?,
A. unfortunately, once the gum have receeded, there is no way in bringing it back. To prevent them from getting any worse, you need to see your dentist and hygienist regularly, maintain excellent home care routine- including flossing- but also to use the correct brushing technique, remembering not to scrub the gums too much. Use gentle, circular motions instaed. Hope this has helped. Over time, your teeth may become sensitive. Your dentist will address this situation when it arises.

My teeth are not aligned after having my braces taken off, is this my orthodontists fault?

Friday, March 19th, 2010
Q. I recently got my braces off. My teeth are not aligned. My top and bottom row do not meet. I have to pull my lower row for my teeth to sit. Is this my ortho fault? What would he suggest to correct this problem.,
A. I think you are a ittle confused. The ideal- correct occlusion (way you bit together) is the top teeth should be slightly over your bottom teeth. They shouldn’t meet like an edge-to-edge bite. Some people’s teeth do, but this isn’t ideal as over time, the teeth are worn away and can become very short- not to mention be sensitive etc. It sounds as though your orthodontist has corrected your teeth into a perfect position. Hope this has helped.

How to remvoal stains from the front teeth?

Friday, March 19th, 2010
Q. My 9 year old daughter has stains on her front teeth. How can this be removed?,
A. The staining may be superficial- and a simple trip to the dentist can get rid of this. Alternatively, it could be the first signs of decay if they are brown spots etc. I would recommend that you visit the dentist with your daughter for a check up and to discuss how to brush etc. You may want to explain to your daughter about going to the dentist and what to expoect if she hasn’t already been before.

Can anything be done about an implant treatment gone wrong?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010
Q. I have nearly finished treatment for an implant. However the way my gum was cut to place the implant means I have a v shaped gap in my gum, so the crown will not follow my normal gum line – the first one they tried had pink coloured porcelain at the top, (about 1/2 cm) which didn’t match my gum! It looks terrible. Can anything be done about this?,
A. The dentist could try and match the pink porcelain a bit better so that it blends in with your natural gum colour. This can be quite tricky as porcelain texture mimicks teeth really well, but not gum. The only other problem is that other materials tend not to bond very well to porcelain. Another option is to have a soft tissue graft- taking gum away from another inconspicuous area of your mouth and attatching it to the area. This IS a surgical procedure and can be quite unpredictable. The only other option, is to accept it the way it is. Hope this info has helped.

Do tooth gaps cause bad breath?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010
Q. Gaps between the teeth are one of the reasons for bad breath. Is this true?,
A. Bad breath- also known as halitosis is caused by many factors: 1. strong foods with odour- garlic, onions, curry etc 2. bad oral hygiene- ie not brushing and flossing regularly 3. Smoking 4. Not regularly drinking water to hydrate the oral cavity and wash away any food debris 5. Food trapping through poor fitting restorations (fillings and crowns etc) To avoid any bad breathe you need to improve your oral hygiene and see the dentist and hygienist regularly.

With 6 month smiles I am into 7th month of treatment and am unhappy

Thursday, March 18th, 2010
Q. Hi I have had the 6 month smile braces fitted and I am currently at month 7 of treatment. I had the braces fitted as my upper right and left lateral teeth were slightly crossing over my front two teeh. By month 4, this was straightened out, but my front right tooth had began to come forward slightly. The dentist adjusted my brackets and said this should be solved within a month. It is now three months later and this problem is getting worse, my front right tooth is now visibly protruding and slightly crossing over my front left tooth. I think my upper lateral teeth have now been pushed too far back and this is causing the front right tooth to push forward – please help! im at the stage where i just want to ask the dentist to remove the brace and veneer my teeth instead.,
A. Firstly, I can understand how distressed you feel. I don’t quite understand how th front tooth can stick out more now- as the wire moves the teeth into alignment- unless one of the ligatures (bands) around the brackets had come off without you realising. If you are in any doubt about the progress of your treatment, you are in your own rights to get a 2nd opinion from another dentist/orthodontist. I don’t recommend that you get a veneer- instaed, perservere with the braces as this is the best long term option for when your teeth have aligned. You do need to wear a retainer after your treatment has completed to stop your teeth from moving back. Good luck

Is there any treatment available for teeth that are in bad condition?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010
Q. Hi, My Teeth are in a pritty bad condition since I was a child, I do go to the dentist and had lots of fillings, fillings also in my front teeth at the top but they become discoloured and i get them replaced but it doesnt look good, I lost my smile a long time ago and as the years has passed by they seem to be getting worse dispite im trying to look after them the best i can all the time, i no longer smile showing my teeth anymore and have lost alot of confidence, i won’t even aply for jobs im intrested in because of my smile. I have mentioned whitening in the past to my dentist before i new anything about veneers but he explained that whitening would not work cause of all the fillings i have there, so now i have read all about veneers do you think it would be a option for me, my bottom front teeth are fine so would they just need whitening, my top two front teeth have slightly gone crocked (because of the drilling n fillings there i think) would i need additional treatment on them or would veneers help that. Big problem i have is that i will only go to my dentist as I no he’s seen all my teeth before, im so ashamed to go to a different dentist to get advise or treatment, u may not beable to answer any of my questions as you have not seen them but I felt it was worth a try in asking for your advice anyway, thanks for your time,
A. Thanks for your questions, although it is impossible to say for definite without a consultation, it sounds like veneers could be a solution for you. As they can be used to improve the size, shape and colour of you teeth, to create a more aesthetically pleasing smile. I would recommend that you discuss this option with your existing dentist, or consider a free intial consultation with a cosmetic dentist to plan the treatment and discuss the costs and repayment plans. I hope this will help, I wish you well with regaining your confidence. Kindest Regards. Dr Kailesh Solanki

Any treatment available for obvious gaps in teeth?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010
Q. Hi Dr Solanki I unfortunately suffer from a lot of overcrowding and as such both of my top incisor teeth stick out . I waited and waited for my dentist to take action when I was younger but he kept on putting off orthodontic work as my milk teeth took so long to fall out. We eventually moved to a different area where we couldn’t get a dentist. As a result I never got the braces I desperately wanted. I am now at a stage where I have summoned up the courage to get braces, a process which I know will be costly as I am now in my mid twenties. I still have a milk top right canine tooth and am wondering if this will have to be removed prior to braces being fitted? If so, will I have to wait until a new tooth grows in before braces can be fitted? The thought of wearing braces as an adult fills me with dread but the prospect of having a gap prior to braces is even worse. Is there any way this obvious gap could be covered up? Many thanks in advance for your help.,
A. Hi there, as you still have the upper canine baby tooth present, then it is unlikely that it will come through at your age. The permanent tooth may not have formed when you were younger or it may have drifted to another area. A panoral xray will show this in detail and confirm wether you have this tooth or not. You will need to know this before any treatment is done- as it will determine what options you have. If the baby tooth comes out, then you will be left with a gap. Braces these days tend to work relatively quickly in comparison to what they used to be like. You need to discuss all of your options with the dentist. I hope this has helped and well done for plucking up the courage. Don’t foregt that wearing braces when you are an adult isn’t such a bad thing. THere are many orthodontic applinaces that are very discreet. Good luck

Is it common for the gum to ache 6 months after teeth removal?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010
Q. Iam 55 years old and had my upper back 2 molars removed I am also missing the biscupid on this side.. Although the gum has healed it is constantly dry and sometimes aches. Is this common the teeth were removed over 6 months ago.,
A. it can take several months for the extraction site to heal. This is not uncommon, however I am unsure as to why the area feels dry? This could be down to other factors- such as mediaction that minimises saliva production. If you have any issues and if the concern is really high, then I would recommend that you see your general dental practicioner to resolve these.

Any advice on cosmetic dentists?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010
Q. Hi, I have a query, I have 3 gaps between my teeth (front, upper teeth). I wanted to get dental bonding/composite to fill in the gaps. The cosmetic dentist I am hoping to do the job is not listed on this site. I just wanted to know how I can best tell if someone has the skills to perform the procedure. Are there any dentists I should be worried about? I know its a bit odd of an odd question, but I would apreciate any help you could give. Thanks,
A. Hi there. If he is an experienced cosmetic dentist then he will be more than qualified to carry out the treatment. There are several skill levels required for such treatment- and there are also many materials that are bad/good quality. If you have any doubts, then perhaps ask to see some before/after pictures of similar cases- as a good cosmetic dentist keeps these records on his profile. The only thing that you should consider is a more long term option. Perhaps porcelain veneers would be a better option for you. Porcelain – provided that a good technician has made them, can look great. They will not stain over time like composite bonding- and are less likely to fracture/chip. Just a thought. You need to consider all your options and be 100% sure that this treatment is right for you. Alternatively, you could opt to have braces to close the gaps.

My two front teeth have moved forward, is this because of the new lingual brace?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010
Q. Hi, I had an upper lingual brace fitted two weeks ago and had extractions before as my teeth are overcrowded. However, it seems as though one of my front two teeth has moved further forward! is this possible or am I just being paranoid? And how long does it generally take for the gap to close? Would really appreiciate a reply – many thanks,
A. If you have any issues with your treatment, it is always advisable to discuss this with the performing dentist. Don’t feel embarassed to ask questions and query anything in realtion to your braces/ortho treatment. Teeth can move in many different directions- some of them move out of alignment first and then back again. This is quite normal. All teeth move at different rates, and it also depends on the type of braces you have. I wouldn’t be too concerned at this stage, but you need to stress these concerns with the orthodontist. Good luck

What is the cheapest option to have front teeth pushed back?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010
Q. I have had a retainer for years to push my front teeth back at night. But now the retainer won’t stay in and doesn’t seem to work and I need a treatment to push my front teeth back but I’m worried about the cost – what’s the cheapest and hopefully permanent solution? Cheers!,
A. The bets way to keep your teteh in the right position is to wear a retainer!!!!! The reason it doesn’t fit is because the teeth have moved. If you find that your teeth are moving alot, then you may need to wear the retainer as much as you can- every night- and sometimes even through the day. You could also opt for a fixed retainer which is a thin metal wire bonded to the back of your teteh – so you wont see it, then this will stop the teeth from moving, so that you wont need to remember to put your retainer in at night tec. There are several forms of ortho at the moment on the market. Ask you orthodontist to discuss these options with you. Hope this has helped- and remember to wear your retainer!

Should I get two implant or just have bridge done?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010
Q. I am a female, 21 years of age. I have a hereditary problem where I have missing permanent teeth under 6 of my deciduous teeth. Before my orthodontist put braces on me, he pulled out 6 of my deciduous teeth as through as X ray, he could tell that they were weak and the roots were not really firm/stable. 1 deciduous tooth was pulled out in the top right part of my mouth, and another 1 at the bottom right part of my mouth. Both of them are at the same location if you count from the mid line of my mouth. 2 other teeth were pulled out from the top left part of my mouth and another 2 right below it, on the lower jaw. My doctor told me that I have to get 2 implants put in on the upper and lower left side of the jaw (where 4 teeth were pulled out) as the gap cannot be closed by just braces. Well, technically it is possible but the midline would shift, causing my smile to be ugly. In conclusion, I want to know if it is worth investing so much money in the 2 implants. Should I just have a bridge done? My doctor says it will be a waste as the rest of my teeth are so perfect. What should I do? My braces will be off in July and I do not want to have the 2 gaps empty for long. Alternatively, would it be ok if I asked my doctor to close up the gap in the lower jaw and have an implant in the upper jaw? Would my teeth look weird? Please advice. Thanks a million.,
A. I just need to clarify that having a bridge is not the best long term option- as the lifespan of them range from 10-20 yrs. You also need to be aware that the teeth on either side will need to be drilled down to house the bridge teeth. This may compromise the health of the teeth- and these may need to be Root treated in the future. This will then weaken the teeth and their lifespan is reduced further. Dental implants are by far the best long term option in regaining fixed teeth. They are teeth in their own right and can last you a lifetime if they are looked after. I would recommend implants over bridges in your case as you have many yrs ahead of you. This would be an investment in the long run. As for closing the gaps with braces, this can- as you quite rightly said, create an unsymmetrical smile with the wrong size/shaped teeth in the wrong place. Hope this has helped.

What treatment can help to fix underbite?

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010
Q. I have an underbite and my teeth dip back in the front i have always hated this can this be fixed,
A. It sounds as though you have what we call a class 3 occlusion. This can be difficult to rectify unless you have jaw surgery to correct it. There are treatments available thta can create the illusion of better aligned teeth, but this will just be masking the initial problem. I advise thta you see you dentist to see what options are available to you.

Is Damon braces good choice to close missing tooth gap?

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010
Q. i have missing upper lateral incisors and also have c rowdy teeth in my lower teeth so i see the orthodontist which snuggest ceramic brackets in up and fixed metal in low ,but i ask him to do Damon system for me .what do you think,
A. I just need to discuss something with you first, If your upper lateral incisors are missing and the orthodontist has suggested that you move close the gaps by pulling the canines in, the your smile may look a little odd as the canines are alot bigger than waht you side teth are supposed to be. For the best ‘aesthetic’ result, then I would recommend that you consider having dental implants in these areas to regain these missing teeth. that way you will create a perfect smile an dthe braces can align the other teeth accordingly. Damon barces is a good alternative to conventional braces as the treatment time is reduced considerably. Ceramic braces are also a good option, because they are a little more discreet and can still be done quite quicly- systems such as 6 month smiles work well. You just need to be aware that the more discreet options are usually more expensive. Hope this has helped.

Will I have to go private to get braces?

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010
Q. hi there im 20 yrs old and i have a gap between my two front teeth on the top row. and either side i have two teeth missing as i never got my second teeth, they never came thru. and have been told id have to pay 4 a brace privatley. is there no way id be able to pay it off in instalments as i think a brace is very exspensive, and i do not work i am a full time mum. i think i should be able to have it on the nhs as its not my fault about my teeth.,
A. I am sorry to hear about your situation, but as this wasn’t addressed at a younger age, then you’re right, you will need to pay for your treatment privately.(as you’re over 18 now) Braces can be quite expensive, but many clincs offer payment schemes and finance to make the treatment more affordable. As you mentioned that your side teeth didn’t come through when you were younger, the perhaps braces aren’t the right treatment- as bringing all the teeth together to close the gaps may make your smile appear unsymmetrical as the right teeth aren’t in the right place. Ideally, you need to discuss all of your options with a cosmetic dentist to see what the best results can be. You may need to have alternative treatment such as implants in the areas where your teteh didn’t come through to restore your smile to its best potential. Good luck. If you need more information or a free consultation, I would be more than happy to see you at one of my kissdental clinics in Manchester.

Could i get Dental Implants on NHS?

Monday, March 15th, 2010
Q. could i get Dental Implants on nhs? as my teeth are bad and getting me depressed. i dont smile and i cover my mouth when speaking to people,
A. The NHS only provide implants in rare circumstances. If you see your local dentist, He/She will explain this in more detail. You should most likely be expected to pay for this treatment on a private basis- and prices can vary alot depending on where you have the implants placed. I would be happy to see you at one of my kissdental clinics in the Manchester area for a free consultation to discuss your options with you. Good luck

Can you give me a price guide for a smile makeover?

Monday, March 15th, 2010
Q. hi i am travelling to work in turkey this summer and would like a price guide to how much it wud cost me for a smile makeover .. my teeth arnt all that bad however some work my be needed could you give me location in turkey i could have this treatment and average cost for venners, crows etc. many thanks,
A. I can only recommend places in the UK as I am uncertain about the dental clinics in Turkey. I would strongly advise that you do your research before you embark on any cosmetic treatment. This can be to visit the clincs before hand, get plenty of information and ask to see pictures of previous cases to see the standard of work that they provide. It is also a good idea to visit several practices before you decide to go ahead. Good luck and I hope this has helped.

Anything that can be done to treat stained filling without going to the dentist?

Monday, March 15th, 2010
Q. i had a filling put over my front tooth 6 days ago and i had a curry last nite and it has stained the filling,is there anything i can use to help the stain instead of going back to the dentist, many thanks.,
A. It sounds like you have had a composite filling- these can stain over time- especially with foods such as curry and other highly coloured foods and drinks. Staining can often be superficial, but it sounds like it may be need to be replaced. Venners are something that you can consider as the porcelain doesn’t stain and can look as natural as your own teeth. I recommend that you return to your dentist to havethe filling replaced and then to talk over some more long term options.
