Q. i never brushed my teeth on a regular basis untill my late teens and i have really bad teeth i have numerous black fillings severe gaps in my gums in between teeth and lack of gums at the base of what teeth i have left also i think because of the lack of gums my teeth by the holes actually have tilted so that they r leaning on the next tooth . my question is as this is really affecting my life is there anything i can do to get rid of the gaps ?,
A. You need a full examination to check for underlying disease in your mouth – decay and
gum disease. Only then can a treatment option be discussed. Please contact my surgery as soon as possible and I will then be able to go through all your treatment options following a comprehensive examination

Q. I have 4 veneers – two of them are now starting to show my original teeth at the top due to my receceding gums. What would you suggest? Also I’d like to whiten the rest of my teeth, would the bleach interefer with receding gums? Thanks,
A. The bleach will not interfere with your receeding gums. The best option for your failing veneers is to have them replaced with new veneers that extend up to the gum line

Q. After cancer treatment, I have much gum recession and discoloring of some teeth. I visit my dentist twice a year for cleanings and checkups. I need help in deciding what is best for treatment. Since I have such sensitivity, would it be a good idea to get “no-drilling” technique veneers vs regular veneers? Thank you,
A. Your tooth sensitivity will be to exposed dentine. If this is sealed your sensitivity will be greatly reduced. When veneers are placed on teeth they are bonded into place and , if this is done properly, will seal the sensitive dentine. Non- prep veneers may not disguise effectively or aesthetically the discolouration problem

Q. My daughter damaged her front teeth 2 years ago. At the time she went to hospital where the dentist pushed a tooth which had been dislodged back into place. Now this tooth is turning grey. Is there anything that can be done to prevent this happening further and to restore her natural tooth colour? Thank you Regards.
A. If this is an adult tooth the tooth can be root filled and later have internal bleaching carried out to treat the discolouration

Q. Hi im 56 and i suppose the last time i went to a dentist was 40 years ago. i attended Kings College Hospital, London at first as a guinea pig and got paid 5 shillings. I had a lot of work done there including a false front tooth which is on a metal plate, as i have not been to the dentist since then, incidently i was very frightened by all the experience there that i now have a phobia, please help me as that false tooth has now eaten away at the gum above it so my tooth is slowly been hidden as half of it looks like it is broken. I have so many broken teeth some are left but occasionaly give me pain, which i bare it as much as i can take it, this will last 3/4 days. Im registered Disabled as i have has a stroke and two TIA’S. Im so ashamed of my teeth that im afraid to smile bec ause as i do people look straight at my teeth. Please, please help me, as being disabled i dont go out a lot now, but i want to, im losing all my friends because of this and getting very depressed im on Fluoxtine to help me. I do hope you can help me. Thank you for listeneing to me.
A. Dear keith . It sounds as though you have a real dental phobia if you keep on getting pain and still do not go and see a dentist. There are dental practices around that offer
sedation for treatment. This may be the best route for you to follow – at least initially.

Q. i think i understand the difference between veneers and lumineers, but which is better?,
A. There is no differnce – lumineers are a brand of porcelain veneers. They are marketed as very thin veneers that require no preparation of the teeth. This concept can be used depending on the specific situation you have in your mouth

Q. Hi there, Basically my right side jaw is completely different to the left and I have difficulties chewing because of this. I’m not sure whether I have an overbite as well so I was jut wondering what the next step would be,
A. A tooth position issue would generally need an orthodontic assessment to determine whether moving the teeth would improve your situation. You local dentist should be able to help with a referral

Q. don’t know how much you know about medicare & medicaid in the u.s. but medicare does not pay for dental unless it’s medically related (cancer, etc) and medicaid will pay for
extraction & least costly full dentures only. in my case, i was told by my dentist i needed all my teeth out because they were too loose due to bone loss (i’m 54yrs old). i was referred to an oral surgeon who looked at the xrays from the dentist, agreed with the diagnosis & also said i needed alveoplasty in all four quadrants. the surgeon did not discuss why it was needed, did not discuss exactly what was involved…i only saw & spoke to him once for about 5 minutes before i was put under for the procedure. the surgeon placed my dentures directly after the surgery. the dentures were made by my denturist. the same day as the surgery, i had to see the denturist because the lower dentures were flopping around in my mouth. the denturist was shocked/surprised at how much bone the surgeon had removed. he did some adjusting and replaced the lower denture in my mouth. i saw him again the next day, he made another adjustment and advised me the alveoplasty done made me a perfect candidate for implants. continued trying to wear my dentures but the lowers just won’t fit correctly. a soft liner was added about a week after the surgery to help with the fit…it didn’t help. i’ve had several adjustments, approx 2 a week since the surgery, my gums are healing well, it’s been three weeks since the surgery, most of the swelling is gone. my denturist has me using denture adhesive to keep the dentures in place. he suggested using “secure” which works very well on the uppers but not at all on the lowers. he keeps telling me i’m perfect for implants. the problem is, i can’t afford implants and medicare/medicaid won’t cover implants. here’s my question…what on earth can i do to hold my lower dentures in place? the lower gum is so flat it simply won’t hold the denture in place, even with the denture adhesive. is it possible the surgeon took too much bone off? i realize part of the responsibility was mine to be sure i understood all aspects of the procedure. however, i was given the impression the surgeon wouldn’t do the extractions if i didn’t also have the alveoplasty. everything i’ve read on the procedure states the alveoplasty is supposed to make dentures fit better. my experience has been the exact opposite. is there anything else i can do to make my lower dentures fit better. my denturist states he will make more adjustments after the six week healing period. in the meantime, i’m eating only the softest of foods & most of that i’m swallowing whole, which can’t be good for the digestive process. i can’t eat with the dentures in because the lowers simply won’t stay in place.,
A. These are common problems but rest assured the stability of the denture will be imnproved following a healing period and possible relining.

Q. hello..ive recently had top and bottom dentures fitted..approx 2 months ago..i am finding the bottom denture so hard to wear..it restricts my tounge and i cannot eat with it..my dentist had told me he will not relign them until 6 months…is this normal?,
A. For immediate dentures – this means having your teeth removed and the denture fitted- this is a good idea as the bone shape will change dramatically over the following months. If you still have problems consider having implants on your lower jaw to stabilize your denture.

Q. I just came from the orthodontist today to get a quote on how much it will cost to fix my teet. hthe problem is my lower jaws is over develop and my upper jaw is very small, so my teeth is very crooked. There’s no space for all my top teeth so they actually came out on top of eachother. Do you think the porcelein veneers will actually work on me?,
A. They often help to disguise the look of teeth to greatly improve your smile. Your type of bite requires careful management but I have treated cases such as yours successfully

Q. Hi, I currently have had a problem with receeding gums and as a result my bottom tooth has been pushed out a bit and i now struggle with a slightly wobbly tooth. My main problem is that my bottom jaw comes out further than my top so now i keep catching my bottom wobbly tooth on my top teeth when i eat. What is the best brace or treatment i can get to solve this and at the cheapest cost? thanks,
A. You need to be assessed as to which teeth are savable and which need to be removed. Your gum condition needs treatment and then your treatment options will include braces, dentures, bridges and implants
