Is there anything I can do to get rid of the gaps?

Thursday, June 10th, 2010
Q. i never brushed my teeth on a regular basis untill my late teens and i have really bad teeth i have numerous black fillings severe gaps in my gums in between teeth and lack of gums at the base of what teeth i have left also i think because of the lack of gums my teeth by the holes actually have tilted so that they r leaning on the next tooth . my question is as this is really affecting my life is there anything i can do to get rid of the gaps ?,
A. You need a full examination to check for underlying disease in your mouth – decay and gum disease. Only then can a treatment option be discussed. Please contact my surgery as soon as possible and I will then be able to go through all your treatment options following a comprehensive examination

You can see my original teeth under my dental veeners because of receding gums, what can I do?

Thursday, June 10th, 2010
Q. I have 4 veneers – two of them are now starting to show my original teeth at the top due to my receceding gums. What would you suggest? Also I’d like to whiten the rest of my teeth, would the bleach interefer with receding gums? Thanks,
A. The bleach will not interfere with your receeding gums. The best option for your failing veneers is to have them replaced with new veneers that extend up to the gum line

Would it be a good idea to get “no-drilling” technique veneers vs regular veneers?

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010
Q. After cancer treatment, I have much gum recession and discoloring of some teeth. I visit my dentist twice a year for cleanings and checkups. I need help in deciding what is best for treatment. Since I have such sensitivity, would it be a good idea to get “no-drilling” technique veneers vs regular veneers? Thank you,
A. Your tooth sensitivity will be to exposed dentine. If this is sealed your sensitivity will be greatly reduced. When veneers are placed on teeth they are bonded into place and , if this is done properly, will seal the sensitive dentine. Non- prep veneers may not disguise effectively or aesthetically the discolouration problem

Why is my daughter’s tooth turning grey?

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010
Q. My daughter damaged her front teeth 2 years ago. At the time she went to hospital where the dentist pushed a tooth which had been dislodged back into place. Now this tooth is turning grey. Is there anything that can be done to prevent this happening further and to restore her natural tooth colour? Thank you Regards.
A. If this is an adult tooth the tooth can be root filled and later have internal bleaching carried out to treat the discolouration

Does my tooth need extracting?

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010
Q. I have 1 (single) crown in my mouth #3 tooth. It is all porcelain. I have no metal fillings…. A 5 year old crown was removed and replaced 7 months ago because it was itching and aching dentist said maybe it was an allergy to the metal under the porcelain so we would replace it will all porcelain. Since the procedure I have been in pain. Loud crack was heard upon removal of crown. Dentist said it broke down too far but there was nothing we could do about it. Tissue was red and inflamed upon removal of crown. Burned and ached when tempory was placed. Endodontist said that it looked like the tooth could be re-absorbing (sp?). Have had a sting in the distal part of the tooth for 7 months. Was told that the distal root was sensitive and bleeding and needed a retreat root canal. Endodontist said the distal root had a black ring in the gutta percha used to fill canal. This was removed and replaced and I was told that the bacteria was causing the sting. Topical on tissue takes away the burning sensation for a short period of time. Oral Medicine doctors did allergy test to see if the sting was actually being caused by an allergy. Test proved negative. Oral Medicine said maybe a piece of cement was in the distal part of gum because the tissue bled when the explore was used. Periodontist evaluated tooth and the tissue around the tooth and the tissue had 4-5 pockets around the crown (All other tissue is healthy 2’s) Periodontist completed a crown lengthening because the tooth was broke down too far and had improper margins. Hurts to bite down on anything hard or crunchy. Tooth is sore to touch with tongue. Tooth aches and or stings in the distal part of tooth CONSTANTLY.(Sometimes I will have referred pain on the tissue next to #3) But mostly it is concentrated around only this tooth. Oral Medicine doctor said maybe it is Neuralgia but never did any diagnostic tests. Dr. put me on Gabapentin that did NOTHING for the pain instead just made me feel drugged. After 2 weeks I was still in pain and my friend had me make an appointment with a neurosurgeon. After reviewing my case he did not believe I have TN…I asked and was instructed on how to wean myself off of the Gabapentin. I visited my GP doctor last week. She contacted my neurosurgeon through email as she is also a U.W provider. He did not think he could help me. And I surely do not want to take up his time with unnecessary appointments. I am praying I can get your blessing and know that it is O.K. based on my history and symptoms to assume this is in fact is a tooth issue. I do not want to spend my time in any more pain just because another specialist wants to make a heroic effort to save a tooth that in reality is not going to get better…. In a nut shell…. Pain is the same as it has been during the 7 months…Constant sting/ ache. I do not have any triggers such as wind, cold, and eating on the opposite side of the mouth is completely comfortable even therapedic. It is just the left side #3 crowned tooth that is uncomfortable to chew on. A sharp pain is caused when I bite down and then slowly subsides. I have an appointment with an oral surgeon to evaluate the tooth for extraction tomorrow. This pain has had a very negative effect on my overall health. I have not wanted to exercise in 7 months because of the tooth hurting, yet eating is not a problem (on the opposite side) so I have gained 25 pounds. My blood pressure in October prior to the tooth’s pain was 117/76 it is now 159/90. Is it safe to say this is a tooth issue? I am allergic to iodine and would prefer to not chance a test that could pose a risk if this is truly just a tooth that needs to be extracted…Please advise…. Your thoughts are very much appreciated!!!! Thank you so much!
A. You may have a crack in the tooth that extends through the tooth. If this is the case the best option is often to have the tooth removed and have it replaced with a bridge or implant

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010
Q. Hi im 56 and i suppose the last time i went to a dentist was 40 years ago. i attended Kings College Hospital, London at first as a guinea pig and got paid 5 shillings. I had a lot of work done there including a false front tooth which is on a metal plate, as i have not been to the dentist since then, incidently i was very frightened by all the experience there that i now have a phobia, please help me as that false tooth has now eaten away at the gum above it so my tooth is slowly been hidden as half of it looks like it is broken. I have so many broken teeth some are left but occasionaly give me pain, which i bare it as much as i can take it, this will last 3/4 days. Im registered Disabled as i have has a stroke and two TIA’S. Im so ashamed of my teeth that im afraid to smile bec ause as i do people look straight at my teeth. Please, please help me, as being disabled i dont go out a lot now, but i want to, im losing all my friends because of this and getting very depressed im on Fluoxtine to help me. I do hope you can help me. Thank you for listeneing to me.
A. Dear keith . It sounds as though you have a real dental phobia if you keep on getting pain and still do not go and see a dentist. There are dental practices around that offer sedation for treatment. This may be the best route for you to follow – at least initially.

Which is better: Lumineers? Or Veneers?

Monday, June 7th, 2010
Q. i think i understand the difference between veneers and lumineers, but which is better?,
A. There is no differnce – lumineers are a brand of porcelain veneers. They are marketed as very thin veneers that require no preparation of the teeth. This concept can be used depending on the specific situation you have in your mouth

Did my son have his adult tooth removed by accident?

Monday, June 7th, 2010
Q. hi my 6 year old son had two of his teeth removed because the fillings were falling out and he had peri apical infection. the teeth that had been removed were URD and URE. I was told that those were milk teeth. Now I am concerned there was mistake and they remowed one of his adult teeth .before he had 22 teeth. There was 5 on each side exept for upper right side where there was 7 teeth,. Now he has 4 teeth a gap after 2 removed and one last one. Does it mean that he had adult tooth removed or is it possible to have extra tooth? he did not have any x-ray to check and i was told not to worry, but i cant stop thinking that there was a mista,
A. It certainly sounds as though the correct teeth have been taken out – just the baby molars – but if you are still worried please contact your dentist

I have chewing difficulties because of a problem with my jaw, what should I do?

Monday, June 7th, 2010
Q. Hi there, Basically my right side jaw is completely different to the left and I have difficulties chewing because of this. I’m not sure whether I have an overbite as well so I was jut wondering what the next step would be,
A. A tooth position issue would generally need an orthodontic assessment to determine whether moving the teeth would improve your situation. You local dentist should be able to help with a referral

Would removing all of my wisdom teeth reduce my overbite?

Monday, June 7th, 2010
Q. I am 26 and have always had a slight over bite but not serious. However after getting my wisdom teeth through my overbite is much more noticable. My dentist refered me to have all my wisdom teeth extracted as they were so far back that keeping them clean was a nightmare. The consultant decided to only remove one tooth in the end. What I am wondering is whether removing all the wisdom teeth would help reduce the overbite?,
A. No – wisdom teeth do not directly cause the front teeth to move

What can I do to hold my lower dentures in place?

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010
Q. don’t know how much you know about medicare & medicaid in the u.s. but medicare does not pay for dental unless it’s medically related (cancer, etc) and medicaid will pay for extraction & least costly full dentures only. in my case, i was told by my dentist i needed all my teeth out because they were too loose due to bone loss (i’m 54yrs old). i was referred to an oral surgeon who looked at the xrays from the dentist, agreed with the diagnosis & also said i needed alveoplasty in all four quadrants. the surgeon did not discuss why it was needed, did not discuss exactly what was involved…i only saw & spoke to him once for about 5 minutes before i was put under for the procedure. the surgeon placed my dentures directly after the surgery. the dentures were made by my denturist. the same day as the surgery, i had to see the denturist because the lower dentures were flopping around in my mouth. the denturist was shocked/surprised at how much bone the surgeon had removed. he did some adjusting and replaced the lower denture in my mouth. i saw him again the next day, he made another adjustment and advised me the alveoplasty done made me a perfect candidate for implants. continued trying to wear my dentures but the lowers just won’t fit correctly. a soft liner was added about a week after the surgery to help with the fit…it didn’t help. i’ve had several adjustments, approx 2 a week since the surgery, my gums are healing well, it’s been three weeks since the surgery, most of the swelling is gone. my denturist has me using denture adhesive to keep the dentures in place. he suggested using “secure” which works very well on the uppers but not at all on the lowers. he keeps telling me i’m perfect for implants. the problem is, i can’t afford implants and medicare/medicaid won’t cover implants. here’s my question…what on earth can i do to hold my lower dentures in place? the lower gum is so flat it simply won’t hold the denture in place, even with the denture adhesive. is it possible the surgeon took too much bone off? i realize part of the responsibility was mine to be sure i understood all aspects of the procedure. however, i was given the impression the surgeon wouldn’t do the extractions if i didn’t also have the alveoplasty. everything i’ve read on the procedure states the alveoplasty is supposed to make dentures fit better. my experience has been the exact opposite. is there anything else i can do to make my lower dentures fit better. my denturist states he will make more adjustments after the six week healing period. in the meantime, i’m eating only the softest of foods & most of that i’m swallowing whole, which can’t be good for the digestive process. i can’t eat with the dentures in because the lowers simply won’t stay in place.,
A. These are common problems but rest assured the stability of the denture will be imnproved following a healing period and possible relining.

I’m finding my bottom denture hard to wear, what can I do about this?

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010
Q. hello..ive recently had top and bottom dentures fitted..approx 2 months ago..i am finding the bottom denture so hard to wear..it restricts my tounge and i cannot eat with it..my dentist had told me he will not relign them until 6 months…is this normal?,
A. For immediate dentures – this means having your teeth removed and the denture fitted- this is a good idea as the bone shape will change dramatically over the following months. If you still have problems consider having implants on your lower jaw to stabilize your denture.

I just came from the orthodontist today to get a quote on how much it will cost to fix my teet. hthe problem is my lower jaws is over develop and my upper jaw is very small, so my teeth is very crooked. There’s no space for all my top teeth so they actually came out on top of eachother. Do you think the porcelein veneers will actually work on me?,

My main problem is that my bottom jaw comes out further than my top so now i keep catching my bottom wobbly tooth on my top teeth when i eat. What is the best brace or treatment i can get to solve this and at the cheapest cost? thanks,
