Q.
Hi, the surface of my two front teeth is scratched, which really annoys me, is there anything that can be done to smooth the scratches so that they are no longer visible. Many thanks.

My gums are receeding they are sensitive and bleed when i eat what is the best treatment?

Friday, February 1st, 2008
Q.
Hi There, I am 46 years of age i have hardly any decay in my teeth, however my gums have been receding over the past 2 years….I have attended regular check ups and cleaning appointments. My dentist has not given me much advice he say’s it’s where i smoked? but i also clean my teeth twice a day so maybe over brushing as well…Anyway they have receded and have very sensitive gums…They have got worse over the past few weeks. My main front tooth is loose and the next to it? My dentist still leaves dirt around my teeth after a cleaning consultation? Anyway i have not eaten properly for the past 2 weeks….as my gums are so sore…my dentist say’s thats what is to be expected?..My whole gum hurts and if i eat anything hard they bleed…Not right or good at all….He is trying to persuade me to have implants to replace my 2 loose teeth? …surly this is not correct? Sorry for wafaling on! My question is what is the best treatment? dentures, implants? at the moment i want all my teeth gone as i am suffering a great deal…I can not change my dentist as there are no dentists in my area available…My dentist is private, yet i have lost all faith in him?….can you give me any advice on gum treatment and tooth replacements. I don’t mind paying for the correct treatment and implants/dentures if i knew what i needed? Regards From a very sore and hungry L

broken tooth refilled lasted for 18 years

Friday, February 1st, 2008
Q.
I’ve had a broken front tooth that has recently had to be re-filled. The first repair lasted about 18 years. 18 months ago I had to have it re-done and just recently it was done again but lasted under a week. I have been back today for it to be done again. I would like something more permanent and wonder what you would suggest is my best option. I look forward to hearing from you.

Can lumineers be fitted over crowns by a London dentist

Friday, February 1st, 2008
Q.
According to the lumineers page on your website it states that lumineers can be fitted over crowned teeth – however one of your panel had told someone that this could not be done and they would have to have new crowns. I am interested in lumineers since they would solve my problem of stained slightly crooked teeth all in one. I only have two crowns and not that much money. Previously I had thought about getting clear braces and then spending out on whitening treatments etc – but this system seems so much better espeically since the dark part of the crown seems to be showing through. Would you still recommend lumineers in my case? And if so would I be better seeing an experienced London dentist rather than going to my local dentist (who is on your list but did not mention this nor even clear braces until I specifically made the point – I don’t think they are very “into” this type of thing. I would welcome your response. Thanks.

can bonding be used to close a gap between teeth and to tooth roots

Friday, February 1st, 2008
Q.
I was wondering if you can use bonding to close a gap in a tooth. Also, can you apply bonding to the root of the tooth that shows when you smile. I feel that there is too much gum showing between my two teeth. Thanks for your help.

prominent gaps between front teeth, chipped teeth a cap and pertrified of dentist

Friday, February 1st, 2008
Q.
Hi there, since I was a child I’ve had prominent gaps between my 4 front teeth and still have 2 of my baby teeth which I think are my cuspids. However I had root canal treatment on one of these teeth as the tooth was rotten. The dentist however done a botchy job and now the tooth has discoloured – mind you it probably doesn’t help that I smoke. Also, when I was 12 I chipped my front tooth and have had a cap on it ever since. I’m now 28 and would like to get these done, but I’m petrified of dentists hence the reason leaving it so long. If you could please help I’d be most grateful. I hate my smile and have low confidence because of my teeth. Kind regards, N

I am considerring veneers and have been quoted £475 for teeth whitening is this too expensive ?

Thursday, January 31st, 2008
Q.
Dear Dr Caplan, I am in the process of considering veneers on my teeth. I was told I needed a michelin splint first which I now use. The next step is whitening my teeth and I have been a little surprised by the cost of £475 as I had assumed this was a fairly strightforward procedure. I have already paid £700 for the splint so this additional cost before even considering the veneers came as a shock. The process from what I understand does not include laser treatment. My question is does this price seem fair and reasonable in your opinion? The dentist is not in the centre of London but in the home counties. Before I proceed I want to ensure that I am not being taken advantage of. Thank you for your assistance. Mr A
