Can I Get Veneers on the NHS Through a Private Dentist?

Monday, April 20th, 2015
Q.

My teeth are in quite a state. They are discoloured, one is chipped, and I was also advised I have too many teeth in my mouth. Stemming from a mental health reason, I have eaten sweets over the years and now I am paying the price. I don’t apply for jobs that require customer contact as I have a great fear that people are looking at my teeth, which makes me so depressed. I also never smile for the same reason. As I am a full time carer I will never have the money for the treatment. I was advised by my last dentist to get veneers. My question is can I get veneers on the NHS done through a private dentist? Thank you.

How Should I Go About Getting My Teeth Replaced?

Monday, April 20th, 2015
Q.

Good morning. I have a missing tooth in the front, and due to the lifestyle I used to live I have a few more bad teeth in my mouth. I want to get the whole top set pulled, these are the ones that are bad, and have them replaced. On the bottom I wanted to get the 6 bottom teeth done in gold. One tooth was knocked out. I’d like two in the back of my mouth on the top and bottom pulled. I don’t need them replaced just pulled, the one that’s out in the front replaced, and 6 at the bottom gold.

Are Clear Braces Free on the NHS?

Wednesday, April 15th, 2015
Q.

Hello, I am set to get braces fitted and ordered. This is my first time to an orthodontist and I really would like clear braces. Is there any type I could get free? I’m with the NHS and under 15, my teeth are a bit wonky and there is a small gap between my two front teeth.I’m not with a private dentist or anything like that. If I can’t get clear ones, is there any other type than the train track ones that are also free? Cheers.

As a Younger Patient, Can I Have Composite Veneers?

Thursday, April 9th, 2015
Q.

Hello, I am a 16 year old girl and very conscious of my smile. My dentist says I have a peg lateral and I got a filling to make it look better but now it’s stained. Can I have composite veneers? I’m told I’m too young for porcelain veneers. Do I need drilling? Can it be done without drilling, and is there any harm in them? Can I not choose to have porcelain veneers or replace them when I get older? Please help with advice, I would be grateful.

Should I Have to Pay Extra for a New Veneer Wax-Up?

Thursday, April 9th, 2015
Q.

Hi. I had my temporary veneers put on and they are not to want I wanted, or as I discussed in the consultation. I was told I need to pay another £300 for a new wax-up does this seem right? I feel like they just want more money out of me and have not listened to what I wanted at the first 2 appointments. I feel rushed and thought the whole idea of wax-up was to get it right, not pay an extra £300 when they should have listened to me in first place.

What is a Cheap and Effective Way to Straighten and Whiten One Tooth?

Wednesday, April 8th, 2015
Q.

I have a grey front tooth, due to a dentist missing a problem, which is also overlapping my other front tooth. I’m wondering what procedure would be recommended to straighten and whiten it. I’ve heard of extraction and a fake one screwed in and was wondering about an estimated price as I’m on benefits and it’s affecting my smile and meeting new people as I don’t like it at all. Please, is there any way I could sort this problem out in a cheap and effective way?

I Have a Painful Lump in My Mouth, What Should I Do?

Wednesday, April 8th, 2015
Q.

I have a lump inside my mouth on the lower gum on my jaw. It feels really strange when I talk, eat and smile. It’s quite painful. The pain feels like shooting pains in a way. It also hurts if I bend my head to the left (the side the lump is on). Please help me, what should I do? I’m really worried in case it is a gum infection or cancer because I am young. I only found the lump 10 minutes ago but as soon I started having lunch the pain started. Thank you.

Are My Fillings Causing the Metallic Taste in My Mouth?

Wednesday, April 8th, 2015
Q.

I have had many amalgam fillings fitted over many years and some are above twenty years old. Over the last year I have developed a constant metallic taste in my mouth and both my teeth and tongue feel on edge, sometimes even giving a ‘buzz’ like I’ve been chewing aluminium foil. Is this because my fillings need replacing? If so, am I able to instruct my NHS dentist to do this or do I have to rely on his judgement before I can get this work done? Also, am I allowed any say in what they actually use as filling material because after 44 years of swallowing mercury amalgam I fear I am at risk of mercury poisoning. Do I have a choice of any alternative filling material offered on the NHS or am I forced to go private? If the metallic taste is not because of the fillings do you have any idea what could be causing it?

Can a Filling Make You Feel Unwell Afterwards?

Wednesday, April 8th, 2015
Q.

Dr Moore, have you ever seen patients complain of illness after a composite dental filling was placed? I had a filling done behind my front tooth and have been feeling very unwell ever since. I felt absolutely fine before the filling was placed but since then have been getting very bad headaches, brain fog and a general feeling of un-wellness. The material used was called Venus Flow but I am told it cannot be removed. Can a tooth be removed to rid the problem if the material is impossible to remove? Thanks.

Is My Husband’s Dental Issue an Aesthetic One?

Monday, March 30th, 2015
Q.

Hi. My husband’s 3rd tooth from the front has come out, it was a crown. The NHS dentist said he can’t have a bridge on the NHS as it’s asthetic – you can see it when he talks and smiles and it’s changing his speech. Is this correct as band 3 on the NHS says bridges are included. Surely it’s up to him if he feels it’s affecting him, and he pays for dental treatment? Can they fob him off saying it’s an aesthetic thing? It is at the front so he feels it’s noticeable and also the one next to it could lean in the gap. Thanks.
