I Would Like To Know If You Treat Children For Orthodontics Who Suffer From Osteoporosis?

Friday, August 29th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. I hope you can help us. I would like to know if you treat children for orthodontics who have been on biphosphonate treatment for osteoporosis?  My daughter is 14 years old and has been on and off treatment for 8 years.  I have had her on waiting lists for up to two years only to then be told that now they won’t treat her, even though her consultant has said the risks are minimal.  Is this something you or any of your colleagues can advise us on? She is desperate to be treated because she also has overcrowding that can be painful at times. Thank you.

My Daughter Is Four And Two Of Her Teeth Have Grown Slanted. What Could The Reason For This Be. Is This Anything To Worry About?

Friday, August 29th, 2014
Q.

My daughter who is 4 years old now has two 2 lower inward slanting teeth. All her other teeth are normal. What could be the reason for this? Is this something to worry about?
She got her first teeth exactly when she turned 1 year old. Two lower teeth are slanting inwards face-to-face. When we consulted with a paediatrician, they told us that there was nothing to worry about. I haven’t consulted a dentist yet. I look forward to hearing your reply.

My 14 Year Old Daughter Needs Braces But Her Orthodontist Said This Wouldn’t Be Covered By The NHS. Should I Keep Trying?

Wednesday, August 13th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Patel. My 14 year old daughter has gaps between her top front teeth. Her dentist suggested braces for her and referred her to an orthodontist. The orthodontist agreed that a brace would be beneficial however said that it wouldn’t be covered on the national health! We can’t afford the £2000 quoted but are now concerned as one of her teeth appears to be twisting. Is it worth going back and asking again whether it will now be covered on the national health? Thank you.

My Young Daughter’s Teeth Are Decaying And Discoloured. Is There Anything That Can Be Done For Her?

Friday, August 8th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Patel. My daughter who is 4, has two front teeth that are worn and very discoloured and unsightly looking, I understand these are her baby teeth, but she is already self conscious about them and won’t smile. She also has three back teeth that are decayed and I believe this is due to drinking milk in the night. Is there anything that can be done for her? Her front teeth in particular are chipped and worn with
a thin bit of tooth remaining that makes it look like she has one thin tooth in the centre! As she is now affected by her appearance which is worrying as she is only four! Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

Kind regards.

I Noticed My Sons Upper Gums Are Very Dark Around The Front. Could You Tell Me What Is Causing This?

Tuesday, May 20th, 2014
Q.

Hello Andrew. I hope you can quickly help me. I noticed my sons upper gums today they are not a normal red pink colour and are very dark around the front only. He is 11 years old and brushes regularly.  He has a healthy balanced diet and doesn’t smoke as he is very young and I am sure of this. Could you possibly tell me what is causing this? I am very concerned.  Does he need to see the dentist every six months? His dentist is very satisfied. Thank you in advance for your time, I look forward to hearing your reply.

I Have A Misplaced Mid-line Down To Sucking My Thumb. Will My Dentist Allow Me To Get Braces?

Thursday, May 1st, 2014
Q.

Hello Andrew. I like to ask you a question. I’m 14 turning 15, and my teeth are pretty straight for the most part but my incisors are a bit crooked but for the most part, they look straight. My problem is, that I have a misplaced mid-line because I sucked my thumbs for 11 years. I just noticed a couple weeks ago. I measured it and it’s about 3.5mm off. It’s also very irritating to bite because the lip feels weird. My mum pointed out that my face is now a bit asymmetrical. Will my dentist allow me to get braces? Thank you for your time.

Hi, My Child Has Broken Her Front Tooth. Will It Continue To Grow So It’s Not So Noticeable In The Future?

Friday, April 25th, 2014
Q.

Hi there. I am very anxious as my 2 year old daughter has just chipped a large part of her front tooth yesterday. The dentist this morning said it doesn’t look too bad as she is not in any pain and eating and behaving normally at the moment, but advised an X-ray on Monday morning at King’s.

He did say it may have to be taken out though and this fills me with dread as it’s such a shame for her beautiful smile.

Hopefully it wont have to be extracted. But the question is if it doesn’t, will it still grow a little at this early age and so not be so noticeable over time and can a 2 year old’s tooth be bonded both to make sure surrounding teeth grow in line and of course for the cosmetic reason? Thanks.

I’ve Just Moved And My Son Isn’t Registered. He Has Toothache, Do I Have To Wait Till They Are Open, Or Is There Any Thing I Can Do Now?

Wednesday, April 9th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. My son is 5 years old and is not registered with a dentist as we have not long recently moved. And the past couple of days he has been complaining/crying with toothache. I have been giving him children’s paracetamol but it seems to be getting worse. His school looked in his mouth and said his tooth was growing in the back but when I’ve looked in his mouth and the tooth is a bit black and it looks like it’s got a hole in. Is there anything I could do at this time or will I have to wait till when all the dentist are open? Thank you for your time.
