Can You Get Lumineers Done On Teeth Which Have Been Filled?

Q.
Hello there Dr Solanki. I have a slight problem that I hope you can help me with. I’m looking for some advice as to whether or not it is possible to have lumineers on filled teeth? Basically, there wasn’t a massive hole so the filling isn’t too large and I’ve been speaking to a friend who has had extensive dental work done in the past, however they seem unsure so wanted an expert opinion. Also, after doing a little independent reading around the topic it seems that staining could be an issue? I’m a little confused so would appreciate it if you could clarify. Thank you.

Thank you for writing in. Let me begin with saying yes it is possible to have lumineers done over filled teeth. There are a few mitigating factors though. These are; the size of the area on the tooth that is actually filled and also how rotated your teeth are. As a general rule, if around a quarter or a half of the tooth is filled, then you may be better off with a porcelain crown. With regards to staining, a filling that is stained will likely need replacing because it is ‘leaking’. I suggest that you visit your dentist to discuss this matter further though as I can only give general advice without seeing you for a consultation.
