Can you advise if laser whitening would not cause any more damage to my gums

Q. Hi i have had gum disease before, but been to the dentist and now removed, although my gums are reseeding from my teeth, i have used bleaching before, which i think has done this to my gums. I am interested in teeth whiting but will this cause my gums to do the same thing. I also have a gene disorder called xxy which is proven to give you bad gum disease which i have talked to my dentist about, and she tells me that is not possible. Can you advise if laser whitening would not cause any more damage to my gums. Regards

A. Hi,
when you have your teeth whitened in surgery- your gums are protected with a barrier, so your gums should be fine.
However, when you do the home whitening with the trays- your gums can be affected slightly- but this is only temporary. If you have concerns about your gums and your dentist fails to treat you or refuses to listen, then you can always ask to see another dentist or alternatively move to a new practice. I am unfamiliar with your condition, but looking after your oral health is very important and you should do whatever you feel is right.
