can my broken crown be removed

Q. Hi My lower third molar of the right jaw has a broken crown and I want it to get removed. But the dentist says that as the molar is attached to the lower jaw a surgical operation is required. Is there any way the tooth can be removed without an operation.

A. It may not be possible to remove it any other way. Lower third molars can be very difficult to extract and many people have them removed under general anaesthetic in hospital. Also if the crown has broken there will be nothing to hold on to for extraction in the surgery. Some dentists do perform surgical extractions under loacal anaesthetic. The procedure is exactly the same except that you are awake. I would take your dentists advice. They sound like they know what they are talking about
