Can I have my protruding front teeth straightened?

Q.
My two front teeth have always protruded since I was young, I am 59 now and would like to have them straightened as they seem to be getting more uncomfortable. My dentist tells me that this may not be possible as my gums are receeding. Would having them crowned work, or would the crowns be the same shape as my teeth are now.
A.
Crowns or veneers may work but what is really crucial is to find out exactly how far they protrude. To ‘mask’ the protrusion by using dental restorations you would have to lose some tooth structure and there are limits to what can be removed without damaging the nerves of the teeth in question.

Orthodontic treatment could be the more ideal thing to do. If you have gum problems, that are currently contraindicating orthodontic treatment, then I’d advise that you see a gum specialist first and have any issues checked out and treated if necessary and then consider the tooth movement.

Alternatively if the teeth could be electively root canal treated and then crowned to the ideal positon.
