can i have my front teeth cut to make them shorter

Q. I was just wondering if it was possible to get my front two teeth cut down so they are a little shorter and if there are any dangerous side effects, because dentists have told me its unhealthy but im really not happy with my teeth.

A. It is possible to have some recontouring of your tooth tissue done to make your teeth more aesthetically pleasing. The amount of recontouring that can be done depends on the amount of enamel you have in the area to be reshaped. If your teeth are much longer than the rest of them, the amount of enamel removed may be substantial and the dentine layer (second layer) of the tooth may begin to show. If this is the case I would advice you to consider other options like braces or veneers. The reason for this is if the dentine begins to show, you may experience sensitivity, you have lost the protective layer of the tooth and dentine wears down 9 times faster than enamel. If your front teeth only need to be shortened by 1mm then this can be done without any problems. I would advice you go to a dentist who is used to doing cosmetic procedures it would also be advisable to seek out an orthodontist because you may get the result that you want by wearing braces for a period of time.

Hope this helps
Kind Regards
