can i have braces without taking my teeth out

Q. I am 12 years of age and am 13 in August. I want braces on my bottom teeth but my dentist said before that if i wanted braces on the bottom and the top of my teeth i need 4 tooths out why? And also my friends says that they can have their braces free but when my brother went to the dentists he wanted braces and he said that it was £300.How come my friends get it free?

A. Ask to go and see an orthodontist, don’t take the word of your dentist. Many things are possible without taking teeth out now. Sometimes there are no options if the teeth are very crowded, an orthodontist will be able to give you a good opinion and treatment options.

Since April last year the government changed the way that dentists and orthodontists get paid. In the past brace treatment was accessible to all children for free. Now there are 5 bands and only children that have teeth bad enough to fit into the 4th and 5th band are able to get free brace treatment. Unfortunately this decision is not down to the orthodontist or dentist.
I hope this helps
