Can I be helped as I am scared of the dentist?
Q. Dear Justin, I am absolutely petrified of the dentist – don’t know why – never had a bad experience – I am in need of some serious work – bridges, crowns etc and I can’t seem to make myself go – what can I do – I am an intelligent woman and can’t understand why I feel like this. Even sedation scares the life out of me – I would very much appreciate your response. Thank you.,
A. Hi, It’s hard to answer your question as you don’t even know yourself why you have a fear of dentists. It is a very common fear which is usually brought on by bad experiences. Sometimes people develop a fear because of things they’ve heard they’re parents or others say whilst they were young. It could also be because you have not found a dentist whom you trust. Have you tried taking sedative drugs such as Valium before your appointment? I think the key is to talk find a dentist you trust – perhaps through a reference if you don’t trust your current dentist and see what they can suggest.

The best thing to do is to get a recommendation form a friend and visit a dentist you trust and go from there. If a dentist knows you are nervous he/she will take the time and explain things thorugh with you to make the process nicer for you
