Can dental implants be used if i have gum disease ?

Q. I really dislike the appearance of my teeth and have for a number of years thought about having dental implants. The only problem for me is that i really dont want to wait a long time to complete the treatment as i understand it can take between 3-6 months. Also can dental implants be done if you suffer from gum disease as i believe i have that also?? Mrs S

A. Hi Mrs S, many thanks for your enquiry, firstly we need to establish whether you do have gum disease or not. If you do there are treatments to stabilise this condition and this would be of paramount importance before considering any form of treatment, especially implants as gum disease can increase the chance of implant failure. It is always important to make sure the foundations are good. Once we have ensured the health of your teeth and gums we can begin to think about treatment options.

We can then decide whether the teeth remaining are healthy and strong enough to be cores for corrective cosmetic treatment necessary to improve your smile using crowns and veneers and give you back the confidence. If the teeth are not good enough then we can consider dental implants but i do feel it is a safer option to be able to use natural teeth if possible. Hope all this is helpful.
