Can ceramic crowns be built up
Q. Can ceramic crowns be built up? I hope that’s not a dumb question. I suffer from TMJ in the worst way. My dentist put crowns on all my molars to correct my TMJ. Now it’s worse than ever. I think the top crowns are too short. i think he did this to get my bite in line. the pressure on my joint is constant now not to mention everything else. my front teeth are now banging against each other when i talk. i really believe they are too short. I’m in debt because of this dental work. I cant afford to have them taken off and redone. I’m hoping they can just be built up.
A. It is possible to bond to porcelain to build up the crowns but this is unlikely to improve your TMJ problems. TMJ problems are usually made worse by interferences form the back teeth and it sounds like, as these seem too short, that this is not the case. As an interim measure a full cover splint to even out the pressure may eleviate some of your pain. You may have an internal problem of the joint. Your dentist might decide to refer you to an oral surgeon who has experience in treating TMJ for an assessment, to get a second opinion.

A. hello,
it is highly unlikely that ceramic crowns can be built up in the mouth and tolerate the sort of forces generated by the human jaw. you need to discuss these symptoms with your dentist so he can address them or reassure you that they are transient.
