Can a discoloured tooth be whitened or a new veneer is required?

Q. Hi There, I have a veneer for my front tooth but not for the others and its gone slightly discoloured would I need a new veneer or could I just get whitening also I really want a white gold window as one of my teeth is slight chipped I dont want a full tooth just the outline one can you help at all?

A. You may be able to bleach the tooth but it is probable that a new veneer will be needed – you need to visit your dentist to check that the tooth is not  infected

Veneers or crowns may be the answer but it depends on the severity of the staining and if it is external or internal.

I brush my teeth twice a day with a Oral B electric toothbrush and Pronamel toothpaste and I floss and use Dentyl mouthwash. Recently along my bottom teeth, mostly on the inside but now also on the outside they have started to stain brown and it is becoming prominent. This is only on my bottom teeth and although I do drink tea and coffee (maybe 2-4 cups per day with only 1 being coffee) I do not smoke, drink fizzy drinks or red wine. I have had my teeth cleaned at the dentist but this starts to come back again very quickly. Do you have any advice on what it is or how I can prevent this? Thank you.

Stain can be caused by tea coffee, are you taking iron tablets I would advise you see a dental hygienist.

I had 4 porcelain veneers fitted approx 5 years ago to help straighten my smile & cover a gap. Have had many problems, firstly 1 repeatedly falling off then others breaking. I had them redone but my dentist used the wrong colour and 1 turned grey at the gum! Had 3 redone last year, right colour but fit not very good, smile not as straight and existing teeth can be seen, also new gap where I think too much of tooth was taken off. I am very upset and want to discuss with my dentist and resolve situation but after 3 attempts I am very wary even though I now dislike the result. Any advise please would be welcome.

I had veneers fitted on my top front teeth about 2 years ago. They still look lovely but I’ve noticed that after I’ve had a few glasses of red wine they look a bit darker. They seem to be ok again when I brush them but I’m wondering if there is any particular toothpaste I can use to keep them nice and bright. I have read about a toothpaste called Supersmile which is meant to be non-abrasive and suitable for veneers. Do you know if this would be ok or is there something else you could recommend? Many thanks.

I would advise that you use any of the non abrasive ‘whitening ‘ toothpastes available. I particularly like the Janina products or the Baking Soda toothpaste by Arm and Hammer
