Q. I have bad enamel erosion on my teeth which started to appear when I was a teenager. I had extensive orthodontic treatment and once my braces were removed my orthodontist noticed how much erosion there had been where my teeth were not covered with my braces. My sister’s teeth are in a similar condition and we were both sent for numerous tests to check the acidity of our saliva but with no conclusive results. The erosion has steadied but I still notice my teeth shrinking. Each time I visit a new dentist they are shocked at the state of my teeth and ask if I have been bulimic or been a drug user. I haven’t but I can tell that they never believe me. I had one specialist suggest that it may have been caused by acid reflux. Whatever the cause, my teeth are not in great condition, they are straight from the orthodontics but are stained from lack of enamel and eroded. I feel uncomfortable smiling and never open my mouth when smiling in photos. I was told by one specialist that I saw that I would have to eventually have to have all of my teeth crowned. I would love to have this work done but there is no way that I am able to afford it. I attempted to pursue treatment through the NHS but they do not recognise it as essential yet. Are there any dentists or clinics that can provide treatments in installments to make it more affordable? Is it worth travelling to another country to seek treatment? Are there any clinical trials for implants/crowns that I could take part in? I would really appreciate any advice that you could give me. Thank you
A. I would say your best bet is to ask your dentist to refer you to a dental hospital where they might be able to provide the treatment free of charge
