Am I at risk of decalcification from lack of oral hygiene and wearing damon braces?

Q.
Hi

I am 30 and 10 months ago I started orthodontic treatment with damon brackets. At first I was diligent with cleaning but as the novelty wore off the cleaning became gradually worse.

I am now worried about decalcification. Although I do have them professionally cleaned about every three months.

I explained my concern to my dentist who said they looked clean and I wouldn’t know if I have any white spots until my braces are removed in about a year.

I haven’t mentioned it to my Ortho.

I thought that the white marks appeared around the brackets and so I should be able to see if I have them. On inspection in good light I can’t see anything.

My question is if I can’t see any marks now does that mean I can still prevent decalcification? or do I have to wait (a year) and see.

Thank you for your time

A.
I’d say you’re in the clear if you can’t see anything on your teeth. Your dentist may have high magnification optical instruments to look even more closely. I’d also advise that you use a daily Fluoride mouthwash which will give you even more protection from the decalcification caused by plaque bacteria…oh and of course try to keep them very clean. Try a Sonic toothbrush
