After a tooth whitening session my teeth are now patchy, is this normal?

Q.
Hi, have just completed 2 weeks teeth whitening with my dentist using Polanight with overnight trays and 2 sessions in the dentist. However, some of my teeth are not uniformally white – that is some parts of the tooth are whiter than others. I understand that the part of the tooth nearest the gum line may not whiten as much, but some of my teeth have whiter sections than others. When I raised this with my dentist he said its due to the make-up of the tooth and nothing to worry about and nothing else can be done? Would you agree. Thank you for any advice you can give.

Regards

A.
Hello and thank you for asking your questions.

It’s very common to have uneven areas of colour on teeth and there are very often areas of intense white patches ( that you may have never noticed before) which become more obvious after whitening. Photographs taken before your treatment should show these.

Your dentist is correct that your result is likely to be due to the make up of your teeth, however with more sustained treatment , over a much longer period of time, these areas can start to even out. So it might be worthwhile continuing to whiten for several months , but at a much slower pace to what you’ve been doing.

You can discuss this with your dentist and they would be happy to supply you with more bleaching gels, usually at a nominal cost

Hope that helps
