After A Gum Infection My Dentist Said My Tooth Has Five More Years Left. What Should I Do?

Q.
Dear Mark. I had a root canal on my upper front tooth. This tooth had a plastic material fitted as it was half broken 10 years ago. How long do I have to wait before I can have a porcelain crown fitted on the tooth, as the gum has a visible gap and there is some significant aesthetic damage? Also the dentist left me with a gum infection to deal with and said my tooth has five more years and that I would need an implant. What is the best thing to do as I am a young and attractive and this is getting me down?
Many thanks.
A.
I would advise that the crown (or 3/4 crown or veneer maybe) should be fitted relatively quickly in most cases (within 6 months). It really depends on how much tooth structure you have remaining and how urgent any reinforcement is. This would have to be assessed in person in order to give you an accurate answer. A good cosmetic dentist should be able to give you the answers and the aesthetic results you are seeking. Very often to get the very best results the tooth has to be internally bleached before placement of the crown or veneer.

Kind regards, Mark.
