About a week ago I had a molar in my top jaw removed

Q. Dear Dr Suri About a week ago I had a molar in my top jaw removed – since then the tooth infront of it (the incisor i think) has been giving me some discomfort when i eat. I fear it may have been loosened / damaged during the extraction. What should I do from here? Also I would like to consider having a dental implant in the extracted site and would like more info on costs, procedure etc. Many thanks,

A. Thank you for your question.
Sometimes the tooth next to the one being extracted is traumatised slightly however, this pain should subside with time. In terms of having an implant, usually the tooth should be taken out in a particular way so that there is as little trauma as possible to the bone. Usually then the socket is packed with synthetic bone crystals and left to heal for 4 months before the implant is placed. Your extraction doesn’t appear to have been done this way. This means that you will have some bone resorption so you could not have an implant right now. The best thing to do is to wait for 6 months. At this point the bone will have undergone the majority of the remodelling. You can have the bone levels assessed at this point to see if you are eligible for implant treatment. The bone in the top jaw does receed more than in the lower so the deciding factor will be how close the sinus floor is to the bone. If it is too close and there is not enough bone present for an implant then there is always the option of havong a sinus lift and bone graft
Kind regards

When i place implants in the molar area, I usually wait 2 to 4 months after the extraction before placing one.

Hi- I had all my upper and lower teeth distracted five days ago. My gums are too sore to place and /or to wear the dentures. How do I know if I have air pocket(s)? I can not find any photo’s on any websites. And at this time I can not take anymore time to have a dentist exam-en my mouth to see if everything (gums/mouth) are healing properly. Can you please guide me and/or send me photo’s so I can compare. Thanks greatly

Hi Dr I have just been to my dentist about a month ago and got a filling done. the dentist did take a X-ray and i was told that a missing filling caused all the pain at the first place and a simple filling should make it ok. Now i have a bump next the same tooth. It is not painful all the time but i do get pains sometimes. when i look at the bump there are some white dots on it, I tried to squeeze it couple of nights ago, some yellow liquid came out. Can it be a tooth abscess?

My best advice to you is to revisit your dentist. It does sound like a possible infection but I cannot answer this question without seeing you. My advice is to see your dentist again to ascertain what the problem is. I hope this helps
