A dentist recently recommended the best teeth brushing technique

Q. A dentist recently recommended the best technique for brushing teeth is by starting on your gum and flicking the brush to the tip of the tooth. This apparently decreases the likelhood of rubbing plaque etc into the gumline as well as decreasing the likelihood of receding gums. Despite the above advice, I notice many websites still suggest brushing your teeth in a circular motion. I write a youth newsletter and was going to put in it some ‘handy hints for maintaining healthy teeth’. What would you suggest I write and can I put your name next to it?

A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, there is alot of evidence that brushing side to side causes damage to the tooth and can also help in causing the gums to recede, this is why brushing in a circular motion helps in producing a less abrassive wear pattern on the teeth. the main point to understand is that this circular motion need to be done on both the teeth and the gums to help maintain both tissues remain healthy.
