A Bit Of Tooth Came Out Whilst Eating And Now Food Debris Gets Trapped In The Hole. Will The Tooth Be Okay For A Couple Of Weeks?

Q.
A bit of my tooth came out whilst having something to eat, towards the back of my mouth but in between two teeth. The hole is right in the middle of the teeth and not on the outside/inside etc, it doesn’t hurt (YET) but I can’t get in the dentist until after the New Year, it looks quite dark and a lot of food is getting trapped inside which I have to keep flossing it out. Is this a sign of decaying, as I only visited my dentist in August this year, surely they should of spotted early signs of decay? I also had a crown fitted and they would of looked at my teeth on different occasions, I don’t know what to do? I don’t want to be unwell for Christmas but I have to wait until after New Year.

Hello and thank you for getting in touch. It sounds like you have either lost an existing filling or could have a cavity. Either way, if it is not causing you any discomfort then the chances are that the tooth should be okay until you can get in to see your dentist in the New Year. Alternatively, if you are very concerned about the tooth you could contact your dental practice and request an emergency appointment or purchase some temporary filling material from a chemist to plug the hole and prevent any food debris getting in. These kits are simple to use and can be very effective. Finally, your dental practice will only be shut for a few days over Christmas and will be able to offer emergency out of hours cover should the tooth become painful. I hope this is helpful and I wish you a very happy Christmas. Kind regards, Marcus Gambroudes.
