Can you advice me over having conventional bridge or maryland bridge

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Q. Hi there, I’ve been to my dentist and was pondering over having a conventional fixed bridge or a maryland bridge – I have one missing front tooth. Both treatments cost £1,800 each. The dentist says for the maryland bridge, the reason why it’s that much is that it’s made from lava material. I just wanted to get a second opinion on the price because I thought that a maryland bridge was cheaper than a conventional bridge. Please advise. Thank you.

A. If the bridge involves 2 teeth both fees are top end and if you shop around you will be able to find  good quality Lava bridges for  less. If the bridge is 3 teeth fixed at either end the fees are normal. However individual dentists are free to set fees according to their local market.

Can veneers be done on capped or posted teeth

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Q. Can veneers be done on capped/posted teeth and if so approximately how much could I expect to pay. Thanks

A. If the tooth already has a crown then a replacement crown would be required rather than a veneer. Veneers are used for teeth that have small fillings or for cosmetic coverage.

Could I have veneers if my bite is not perfect?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Q. Dr Moore could I have veneers if my bite is not perfect? ie I can put my bottom teeth over my top but not my top teeth over my bottom teeth. I have always hated my smile and at 48yrs really would love to have a nice smile

A. Veneers are harder to do with this sort of bite but still possible in most cases. You need a thorough examination of the bite and a diagnostic set up so you can decide how the venees will look priort o beginning treatment. Let me know if I can be of any further help. I may need get a bridge for my missing teeth what would be the cost of the job

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Q. Hi Just to give you a background of my teeth; I have had my 2nd Molar removed a few years back due to decay which unfortunately infected the 1st molar. The 1st molar has now broken up and needs to be taken out at the root due to extensive decay. i understand it is hard to do a diagnosis without an appointment; however from what I can see, I may need a bridge to cover the missing teeth. My concerns are the size of job needed, the use of General anesthetic and the potential cost of the job.

A. A bridge from a third molar to a second premolar is technically challenging , not all cases are suitable. Not sure why a general anaesthestic would be needed. The cost of a four unit bridge and a dental implant are similar it might be worth investigating that route prior to extraction.

Is the Invisalign treatment successful and is it worth it in the long run

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Q. I went to my dentist to enquire about getting vaneers as I hate my smile, my teeth are really small and wearing down and crooked and some are smaller than the others. My dentist recommended I get invisalign treatment instead and the end result will just be as gooas as vaneers, plus I get to keep my proper teeth without the risk of ruining the nerves, is this treatment sucessful and worth it in the long run? i want a perfect hollywood smile, which is why I wanted vaneers, is this the treatment for me? My appointment is 1pm tomorrow where I have to go and start paying for treatment

A. I guess this is a good optin for most people but it can’t always create a Hollywood smile like veneers can. Discus your options with him again and tell him exactly what you want.

What is the best material i can use to cement veneers

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Q. hi i am iraqi dentist i just want to ask what is the best material i can use to cement veneers , can i use glass ionomer or polycarboxylate or tetric flow? thanks for your time

A. Hi, I would try to use a flowable composite like tetric flow, etched and bonded to the teeth. i assume you have a  curing light to set the cement through the veneers. If not then you may have to use a dual cure composite or galss ionomer. Regards  Andrew

what would be the cost of ceramic caps

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Q. Is $1200.00 a normal price to pay to have one tooth repaired with a ceramic cap.

A. Local variations apply but UK costs would be in the region of  £450-700. Check that Root canal, and posts  are not part of the fee.

One side of my mouth has a hole and missing teeth could you advice

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Q. I have had dental problems from a young child, this has caused me to develop a fear of the dentist, most of my teeth which I still have are crowns, and fillings a few of my front teeth are fake too. I currently only eat on one side of my mouth as the other side has a hole and a tooth missing. the side which I am eating on also has a hole, and the teeth are in a bad condition food always gets stuck in it People are always wondering why it takes me so long to eat my food but Im too embarrassed to say its my teeth. I tried having a denture fitted to replace the lost one but it was uncomfortable, kept moving and food kept going under it. Im so scared to go to the dentist me not being able to eat is having implications on my diet. Im so scared I dont know what to do I dont want to have a set of full dentures by the time im 40 which is the direction im heading im 29. The amount of treatment I would need would cost me so much money which I do not have at the moment. What do you advise please help kind regards

A. Hi,

A lot of people have a fear of dentists stemming back from childhood experiences so this is certainly not uncommon. Unfortunately I am going to tell you the one this you do not want to hear- you have to go and see a dentist. That is the only way to sort out your dental problems. Be picky about who you go to, ask friends and family for recommendations, research on the internet and go from there.

If money is an issue at the moment then book in to see an NHS dentist as the fees will be minimal.

Hope this has been of help

Could you advise a teeth whitening procedure that would be safe?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Q. I am interested in having my teeth whitened, I have heard that it is not good for the teeth and weakens the enamel, could you advise a procedure that would be safe, painless and gentle to my teeth and also look natural but not too white.

A. it is complete rubbish that whitening damages the enamel i would recommend a prolonged home whitening course or a combi in house laser and home whitening treatment

I need a dental implant is there a way to meet my financial situation

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Q. Hello, i have been told that i need a dental implant and want to also have veneers as i hate my teeth. i have bad credit and in the current climate is hard to get a loan, Do you know of anywhere that will help my financial situation i.e. a dentist that will finance me with a low credit score

A. hi many thanks for your email, it is diffucult to get private finance from a dental practice as they all work off a credit score and outsource the finance to third party companies. sorry but i feel it maybe difficult for you.

What is the procedure to fix my discoloured white filling?

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Q. When I was younger I chipped my tooth so went to my local dentist and they gave me a white filling that was fine until recently when it became discoloured. What is the procedure for fixing this problem? Will the old filling need to be removed and replaced or can this old filling be whitened? I know you will have to treat each case individually but what is the usual procedure? I am currently 16 and have had this filling for about 7 years.

A. If the staining cannot be removed by polishing  replacement is normal

Can you have a braces at the same time as having a bridge?

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Q. Can you wear an orthodontic appliance(brace) at the same time as having a bridge? My son has a missing tooth ( 3rd along from front) on one side and the other side it is misaligned ( high up in gums). Apart from that his teeth are straight so what is best option ?

A. hi many thanks for your email, it sounds as if he decides to go ahead with orthodontics the gap could be completely closed with this, so there would be no reason for a bridge. my advice would be to seek the advice of a orthodontist.

I need a root canal on a tooth that is crowned how long is the procedure

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Q. Thank you for your information on a root canal on a tooth that is crowned. My question is:If I need a root canal on a tooth that is crowned how long is the procedure. I mean how long will I have to be in the endodontic’s chair.

A. It will be no different to having an RCT on a tooth. The time will be the same. However, every Endodontist allows a different amount of time to complete treatment depending on there technique and equipment.

Do I have any alternative than having the roots removed and a denture

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Q. I have a four tooth bridge the first crown is the eye tooth and the 2nd is the last tooth in my right upper jaw. The post snapped on the 1st crown and the dentist has said that I must have implants as the crowns cant support the bridge and the roots are too soft for single crowns with a two tooth denture in between.Do I have any alternative than having the roots removed and a denture until I can affiord the implants. HELP

A. Hi It sounds like this might be your best option as another bridge would be very difficult to keep in place and if the roots are left too long then the bone might shrink away due to infection

Ive lost my 2 front teeth can I get a perminent replacement?

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Q. ive recently lost my 2 front teeth on the bottom can i get a perminent replacement????

A. Yes you can get a perminent replacement. This would be an implant. An implant is a tooth that is implanted into your jaw to replace the one that is missing.

I do not carry out implants but I can recommend Dr Nick Fahey. For further information please contact his practice on 020 7636 5981 or visit www.harleystreetdentalstudio.com.
