Q. im 52, hopefully not too late to take care of my very damaged teeth. ive been told for years to get a deep cleaning and ive been scared, so i havent. i brush daily, not alot of flossing. well, first thing, my bridge fell off (5 years old) two teeth underneith the bridge broke. its on now again, but for how long? second, i was told my bone has really decreased. i noticed my bite changing, but thought it was normal, well my teeth are shifting, one is floating according to my dentist. he recommends deep cleaning. i am rinsing with a presectiption rinse, am on antibiotics cause now i have infection above bridge area, and i floss maybe 6 times a day, brush twice. am i too late? HE SAYS less comprehensive is deep clean, most comprehensive is dentures. i dont want dentures. am i doing the right thing, or is it too late for me now.
A.
You obviously have a gum problem. Some teeth may be savable if gum treatment is undertaken but without examining you it is impossible for me to be more specific. As well as bridges and dentures to replace teeth implants may be an options once you have your gum disease under control

Q. My teeth are unlevel and i wanted to know is there anything i can do about it as i worry because they are a smaller than normal.i would like to know if its possible to wear something threw the night to achive this . thank you
A. If you had your teeth straightened even with appliances that are removable you need to wear them for at 16-20 hours a day. If your teeth are too small then straightening them wont change this.

Q. I am 30 years old and have accute phobia of dentists. When I was younger I had to have a small filling i was not sufficiently anesthetised and it caused a lot of pain. during two of my pregnancies i had chronic sickness and my teeth got in a terrible condition. I have lost parts of my teethand have not been able to eat properly for years.I cant afford private treatment I have become very depressed and i dont know what to do.Please can you help me
A.
You may need to have sedation to help you cope with having treatment. My best advice would be for you to ring your local dentists and ask if they or anyone else in your area can provide this service

Q. Is it possible to get invisable braces – I am 57 years old and my teeth have moved at the front and I would like them straigtened- My teeth are in good condition
A. Yes you could try Invisalign or maybe lingual braces. Most cases can be treated with either of these 2 techniques

Q. My teeth are jagged (from child hood grinding in my sleep)and also slightly yellowing. Futhermore, the front quarter of my tooth is now chipped. The enamel on my left front tooth is so thin on the bottom (see through) that it looks likley to do the same at some point. I have Cystic Fibrosis which means that I have had to eat a high calorie diet to sustain my weight from birth and I also take regular antibotics orally and via a nebuliser and inhalers which have not helped either. I also have severe vitimain D deficiancy which I am on medication for. My dentist is unsympathetic. Her latest attempt at covering my chip looks terrible and discoloured. In three years I have had the tooth filler/cover re-done four times already as it keeps coming off. It means that I not avoid certain foods such as apples for instance. Its starting to affect my confidence. Do you think I would be a suitable candiate for veeners and would I be able to get them on the nhs? I cant really afford them but at 26 I just want a solution that will protect my own teeth (especially the enamel) and that is strong and long lasting so that I can smile with confidence. Thank-you.
A.
Teaching dental hospitals ( try NHS direct ) may take a case of veneers on where there is the general medical consideration. Veneers may be appropriate but you would need a clinical assesment.
Our veneer fees are in line with local private practices £420 -700 per tooth. The StJohns Dental Practice offers a 15minute free consultation.

Q. I have veneers on my 2 front teeth but I would like to get my teeth whitened. How do I go about doing this?
A. If you are happy with the colour of the veneers and they are lighter than your natural teeth the other teeth can be whitened. It is not an exact science and your natural teeth will not match exactly. Your veneers and any white fillings will not change colour. it is also important that the whitening gels are kept away from your veneers.

Q. My daughter had 22K worth of dental work done in Dallas 5 years ago. Her porcelain veneer crown just to the side of her front teeth just fell out. Is this normal? Is her dentist obligated to fix it after this much time? She now lives in Boston. Even sharing the bill among three people was still enormous; we’d expect it to last. Are we expecting too much?
A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, dental veneers are good long term restorations. however the unexpected does sometimes happen and veneers are after all thin slabs of porcelain. the life span of veneers are 10 to 15 years. most good practices do guarantee there veneers between 3 -5 years. your best option would be to call the dentist and see his thoughts on the problem. he may comprimise and just ask you to cover the laboratory costs. hope this is helpful.

Q. Hi my 9 yrs old son has been badly hurt on a zip wire swing. He’s lost 2 top teeth. On his bottom jaw he’s had an op but think he will lose 4 there. His jaw is broken across his chin. this happend yesterday. Is this something that you would or could fix so he can smile without me crying. If this is not something you would deal with could you point me in the right direction please Many thanks
A. I’m very sorry to hear of your son’s accident, I could definitley do something with the teeth once the oral surgery department has sorted out the fractured jaw and more superficial soft tissue injuries
Please call the practice on 01245 268 494 and arrange an appointment with me to take a look and I will be able to give you an idea of what we can do

Q. Hi I have dentures for the top of my mouth, they are NHS. Can you tell me what is the difference with cosmetic ones and what sort of price are they THANKS
A. With cosmetic dentures you get more control over the final appearance , subtle changes make the teeth look more natural less average. The actual materials will vary , teeth have layers of colour so that they look better and also wear better. Guide price for a single set from £400 upwards.

Q. Can teeth whitening damage white fillings and is the strenghth 22% or 16% a factor( I have both from my dentist ) one of my front teeth appears to be losing a white filling after using the 22% and I had v bad toothache ( which I can live with ) after using the 22%.I am considering going ahead with 2 hour sessions in trays with 22%but I am not due to see my dentist until after Christmas and don’t want to damage my front teeth which of course I want to whiten. Thanks for any observations PS my teeth are partially whitened now.
A. hi, tooth whitening can damage white fillings but can damage teeth which have decay in them. it is always prudent for your dentist to check that you have no decay in your teeth before starting on whitening the teeth. it may also just be that your teeth are suffering from hypersensitivity from the whitening treatment. i would recommend you do not commence with any more whitening until seeking the advice of your dentist.

Q. I have had 14 veneers fitted and need another 5 doing. I had them fitted 7 months ago, and have only had 1 week without pain during this time. My dentist didn’t provide me with temporary teeth during the preps, and snapped the front tooth when he removed the enamel, resulting in weeks of antibiotics and pain killers, and eventual root canal on a previously healthy tooth. I am still on the maximum dose of didrofenic and paracetemol extra, and my gums are starting to swell and ulcerate. He wants to see me every week to inject antibacterial treatment every week at a cost of £128.00, until they settle down. What shall I do? Help me please.
A. I would advise you to first talk to your dentist to see what can be done to get you pain free if you are not happy with the reply it may be worth you getting a second opinion.

Q. Hello, i am 43 and have a lot of bone loss. My dentist reffered me to Guy’s hospital some time ago, but i found it hard to keep up the treatment as i am on my own with two small children and the logistics of getting to and from the hospital where very difficult. often i would turn up and my appointment had not been recorded and i was unable to see a consultant. My teeth are now very loose and i have lost two molars and two pre molars at the top of my jaw and one molar and one pre molar at the bottom. my two remaining molars at the top are extremely painful and loose and i am finding it hard to eat. I am very worried about my front teeth as they are now loose. My hygenist was afraid to carry out any work on them. I would really like some advice as what to do next as i really cannot afford to pay for private treatment. I have been told i will require a bone graft. i am very worried and in a lot of pain. I looked into going abroad for the treatment and my dentist suggested that is what she would do, however, i am now in a worse financial position than i was when we first discussed this. please please if you could offer any suggestions i would really appreciate it. thank you
A. Hello
I’m afraid complicated treatment such as this isn’t easy to obtain on the NHS. It might be worth trying to rearrange the treatment at Guy’s as this way you will receive the best treatment without having to pay.

Q. Hi I had part of the side of a molar that is next to a removed tooth years ago fell away, mild aching, sensitive really, saw my dentist who removed the rest of the filling then placed a tempery filling in it to see if it settled down, I had no problems but unfortunatly this came out 10 days later due to me biting something hard,I returned to him and he said he was happy to put in a perminent filling, due to me not experiencing any problems.Since then i have had continueing sensitivity on eating, drinking hot and cold and now on taking in air ,inside and outside the house.I am not sure about going back to him as he is new to me as my old dentist that I trusted implicently retired and he took on the practice.Heseems nice enough just wasnt convinced on my last visit ,that he did the treament correctly, didnt apear to put much filler in my tooth despite proding it an awfull lot.I know he will want to do root canal,as this is what he spoke of last time,I am at a loss to know whether this would be the way to go ,as I experienced no problems when the tempery filling was in,can you advise me please,on my best course of action or treatment.Do I go somewhere else for treatment,or return to him,for root canal.I am on a monthly private scheme. Regards
A. Dear,
It is possible that your dentist is above board from what you describe. The difficulty is that for you to feel comfortable you need to have trust in your dentist. It is a very personal decision but if it I was advising a friend in this type of case I would probably say have the root treatment done and then reassess your feelings. If you still are not happy test shop a couple of new dentists and see who you feel most relaxed with.
Regards Rob

Q. hi, i want to get new front upper teeth and want to know what i should go for and the costs. i have one front tooth which i knocked out age 12 and it has a metal top and sticks out and looks bad. my other front tooth has a chip in it and it often falls off and i have to pay to get it mended. As well as this i also have had coverings put on my upper teeth because the enammal wore off. also they are all very yellow and im very self consious about them so want to get them all done. thanks
A. You need to find a good a cosmetic dentist so you can look at all the options available to you. If the teeth you have are strong veneers or crowns may be the best option but if the teeth are week dental implants may be the best option.
