Q. I have a dead tooth with a root filling in it and it is brown in colour. This is one of my front two teeth. I have veneers on both of my front teeth but the one that is discoloured shows through the veneer. Is there any way of getting veneers that match in colour? Also I had this done privately 2 years ago and the veneer has broken and had to be replaced twice. Is this common as it is expensive and I have to pay to have it fixed.
A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, if the tooth is too dark, then a veneer is not the right option for the tooth, it may be better to crown the tooth using a procera material as a veneer is too transparant where as the crown will block out the discoluration of the tooth. and then replace the other veneer as the material on the crown and veneer will be then the same and the colour match will be perfect. hope this is helpful. The cost of this treatment would be around £1200 – £2000 dependant on where you decide to get the work done.

Q. HELLO DR. I AM IN NEED OF SOME GOOD, SOLID ADVICE. I AM TRYING TO DECIDE IF I SHOULD GO WITH LUMINEERS, VENEERS, OR IMPLANTS. MY TEETH JUST NEED TO BE PRETTY EXCEPT FOR 2 WHICH NEED TO COME OUT. I WANT THE MOST NATURAL LOOK POSSIBLE AND DURABILITY AS WELL. CAN YOU PLEASE HELP? THE DENTISTS I TALK TO ONLY WANT TO SWAY ME TOWARDS THE MORE EXPENSIVE ROUTE SO I NEED ALL THE INFO AND ALL THE HONESTY YOU CAN GIVE ME ON THESE 3 CHOICES I HAVE LISTED. ALSO, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE DURATHIN VENEERS? I WANT SOMETHING THAT WONT STAIN AND WILL LAST A VERY LONG TIME. (AND PAINLESS IF POSSIBLE). THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME!
A. Veneers themselves are not a treatment alternative to implants as implants are used to replace missing teeth – with veneers being used to perfect existing teeth.
The quality of the finished veneers depends as much on the quality of the porcelain ceramist chosen by your dentist as it does the dentists work – so make sure that an excellent lab is chosen.
My preferred option are veneers over Lumineers or Durathin simply as the aesthetic results when carried out properly are superior.
Lumineers can be used when the teeth are already in good alignment

Q. Hello! I am worried about my teeth. One of my bottom tooth is crooked and the top one is slightly pushed forward. I have all 4 wisdom teeth coming through which are impacted as there is not enough room for them to come through. My dentist says that removal is not an option at present as there is not signs of infection which apparently is within accordance of the NICE Guidlines. I am very self conscious about it but really do not want general anesthia to remove them. What would be my options? Thanks
A. Your dentist is right, and therfore the guideline have to be followed.
In regards to your crooked tooth , the following may be be your options (of course a full consultation would be required)
- conventional orthodontics
- inman alligner
- clearstep
- invisalign
etc

Q. i am going to budapest to have 6 veneers to my top teeth.both teeth either side my front top 2 sit back about 4mm will i still get a purfect smile.
A. tou can achieve a straight smile with veneers however sometime your own tooth has to be quite heavily prepared to make them align. You must be aware that these teeth will be weaker and prone to needing more work in the future. A better alternative may be to straightenthe front teeth first and then have veneers

Q. Hello, my right front tooth has over the years has become darker in colour and quite sensitive, I’m guessing its rotting as the enamel is crack . It is sensitive to brushing and cold drinks. What would be the best option to fix the tooth, my other teeth aren’t the greatest either but no where near as bad. I know teeth are important but fixing them are very expensive and money is not available, basically I want to be able to smile confidently without spending alot of money. Thanks for reading.
A. It sounds like you might need root canal treatment and possibly a crown on the tooth. If your other teeth are not in good condition then it may be wise to have the others looked at aswell. Cosmetic work is not available on the NHS. You would be able to get basic restorative work carried out at a low cost.
Unfortunately good dental work comes at a cost laboratory bills alone can be up to £400 per tooth.
Kind regards

Q. I am a 52 year old woman whose teeth were discolored when my mother took Tetracycline during pregnancy. They are not badly discolored, but far from being white. Do you think the Enlighten system would help my discoloration?
A. Broadly speaking yes but in may take a longer time to get the results that you are looking for. Possibly 2 to 3 months of night time bleaching. The alternative of veneers is a possiblity to cover the stain.

Q. hi can you have a 12 unit bridge on mini implants if extra implants where placed in instead of normal 6 top 4 bottom thank you
A. hi
in my experiance mini implants are a joke, and do not provide long term stability and i would only ever use them as temporary measures
do not waste your money on them

The tooth to the right of my front teeth is set back and makes my smile look very very uneven,i have spoken to my dentist who says the tooth is healthy so he would not build it up with veneer (as another dentist suggested).Im twenty three and although i would be happy to wear a brace to correct this problem i am ware they are very costly. Please do you have any suggestions on the most effective and economical way to help. THANK YOU
A. I am happy to offer a third opinion, an initial consultation is free, I would need to see the the actual case to help further.

Q. Hi I was thinking of having an appointment for a durathin consultation, do you know anything about them?
A. Durathin is a brand name they are similar to others available on the market. Porcelains can be made very thin so your own teeth can be preserved. Not all teeth / smile are suitable for this type of veneers so I would recommend seeing a cosmetic dentist who can offer you a number of options.

Q. Hello. I was thinking about the possibility of an implant to replace my very back upper molar which was removed about a year ago. Is this too late to stop the bones from receeding further or would the implant possibly promote bone growth?. Many thanks.
A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, the implant wont promote bone growth, but it will maintain the remaining bone levels. hope this is helpful.

Q. Hello Komal, I’ve never been very happy with my teeth. I’m only 24 but recently they have started to weaken and I have noticed a visual apperance in them changing. I have numerious amounts of fillings and have had to have one tooth removed. This is due to lack of care of my teeth in my teenage years. Obviously I can’t repair the damage that was done but I don’t want it to get any worse. What can i do to not only improve my smile but also fix my teeth? Help please…. Kind regards
A. thank you for your question
If you are worried that your teeth are weakening then the best thing to do is to have a consultation with a restotrative dentist. You need to have an assessment carried out to find out why the teeth are deteriorating. It could be due to the way your teeth fit together and there may be excess pressure on them. The back teeth which are heavily restored may also be breaking down. Any treatment that is carried out needs to be done so that the restorations designed for your teeth will last for as long as possible and will be the best thing for you.
If you are within travelling distance of my practice I would be happy to do a risk assessment and treatment plan for you. If you live in the North of England then the best person to go and see would be a dentist called Ken Harris, in Sunderland at River edge Dental practice.

Q. Hi, I’m having my Zoom whitening on my teeth. The company say that the staff will be trained to use zoom whitening.Don’t they need to be a qualified dentist?

the actual application of bleach to the teeth should be by a dentist but the preparatory work before this could be done by a trained assistant

Q. Dear Dr. Glaister, I had veneers 4 years ago. One fell off in August 2008. Last night whilst talking on the phone one of them chipped leaving approximately half of the veneer remaining. This morning whilst brushing my teeth, a veneer on a different tooth also chipped. My Dentist (who’s a friend) is happy to carry out the remedial works today at a discounted rate but I’m very concerned that it may be something he’s not doing properly. I’ve not bumped my mouth nor eaten anything particularly veneer-breaking. Before I call him I wanted to seek advice so I do look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience. I really do hope you can help, I won’t smile until you do :0) Many thanks
A.
It may well be that you are grinding your teeth at night and creating too much pressure against the veneers
At the very least I would recommend you wear a nightguard to protect the replacement veneers you are having fitted but without examining you it is impossible to say with any certainty this is what is happening
Kind regards

Q. I am 16 and my mum didn’t brush my teeth when i was young, didn’t ever take me to the dentist. they are slightly discoloured and i have bright white marks at the bottom of some of my front teeth, which makes the discoloured teeth stand out more and look more unsightly. is there anything i can do?
A. The white spots often occur because of a problem while the teeth were being made and growing, tooth whitening is the simplest option but does not always mask the spots and in some cases can make it worse. You need to be assessed by a good cosmetic dentist that you trust so all the options can be explained and offered to you. Porcelain veneers or tooth coloured fillings may be an option.

Q. Dear Sir/Madam, I’m writing to ask about incisor repair. My friend’s one of the incisor is cracked. She had treatment before , the back of incisor was granded thinner and patched with a half incisor sized artificial teeth. So the patch is attached to the front part of the incisor. But this time the crack happens to the front part. The cracked piece is about 2mm size. Could you suggest a likley treatment and how much it would cost? Many thanks, Jay
A. The decision on whether a crown , veneer, or refill would be taken when the tooth is seen. NHS costs £44.60 or £198 private costs £150-700 very rough guide as there may other work involved.

Q. I suffered from Bulimia when in my teens, early 20s from which i have now thankfully recovered from. As a result it’s left my top front teeth (6 of them) in quite a bad way, the enamal from behind has all gone and they are quite sensitive. My dentist put some temporary cover on them last summer because i said they were abit sensitive but they chipped, fell away after a while. Im so worried that they are going to rot and fall out. What solutions are open for me? Would veneers be an option? Are they expensive? Having negative equity in a house sale and split from my husband i dont really have much money to play around with. I would talk to my dentist (nhs) about this but im abit embarrased to, they never really put me at ease and im really really scared of the dentist. Please would you be able to answer as soon as possible because im quite worried out this. Thank you for your time.
A. Hi
I would try to seek a second opinion on this as there are a lot of complicated issues to consider. Maybe you should seek advice from a dentist who you trust maybe a recommendation from a friend

Q. Hi there, I used to suck my thumbm as a child and have only sadly enough stopped recently. It has pushed my top right tooth out quite a bit and even though people say its not that bad i think it is and am very self concious about it. What are my options because i think i am maybe too old for metal braces. Can i have the option of the straight braces where you sleep with them on? Please can i have your advice its really bothering me now? Many thanks
A. Orthodontics can be carried out at any age! Your options will be fixed brace work or may be invisible braces to straighten your teeth

Q. Hello, I drink sugar free soya milk as I’m intolerant to cows milk but someone told me it’s really bad for teeth as it causes a lot of decay. Is this true? The type of soya milk I use is sugar free with added calcium. Also is herbal teas damaging to teeth? (eg peppermint tea) Thankyou
A. I haven’t heard anyhting about bad effects of soya milk to teeth especially if it is sugar free.
Herbal teas shouldn’t damage you teeth either unless the are slightly acidic. They can however cause quite a lot of staining
