Q. hi my problem is that when i talk you cannot see my teeth which i have been told makes me look like an old lady with no teeth which is very upsetting for me because i am on 23 years old. i have got perfectly fine big straight upper teeth behind my upper lip but i also have a negative bite, is there a way to correct this maybe bring my maxilla lower and forward and push the mandible back? thanks
A. It is difficult to give you advice without seeing you but you could possibly have surgery with orthodontics to correct your jaw positions. Another alternative could be cosmetic work to show more teeth when you smile.

Q. Hello I am 22 years old. My problem is that in those 22years I have had 32 fillings. I went to the dentist today and ave been told I need another 7! I had 6 baby teeth out when I was about 6-I had 6 fillings in my baby teeth- I have had 5 different types of braces. My teeth look ok but they are like chalk! My problem is it cost so much money for these white fillings I am having but I would never have a silver one as alot of my fillings are on the fronts of my teeth- My dentist has said long term I am looking at a mouth full of crowns. My question is shall I continue to pay for these fillings or start having my teeth crowned?? I have been told I have very good gums and I have great dental hygiene. My dentist has said I have some sort of desease in my teeth were the holes grow from the inside of my teeth- I have to be x rayed every time I go to the dentist. Thank you
A.
Your dentist is the best person to advise you as to the correct treatment for your teeth. There may be a problem with your diet if you regularly have decay in your teeth. Write down everything you eat, including snacks and drink, and let your dentist assess your diet. You may have a high sugar diet without realising it.

Q. Dear Dr Solanki, My partner and I are really interested in getting our teeth whitened. It has got to the stage where we are both embarrassed to smile because of the state of our teeth. We have looked at home kits but I have read mixed reviews. What do you recommend as the best way to go about having your teeth whitened? Yours sincerely
A. hi thanks for your enquiry, there are two types of treatments on the market, 1:in surgery 2:home kits.
a combination of the two work the best, the treatments i would recommend are zoom2 advanced power whitening followed by enlighten home whitening. at my practice i call it the ultimate whitening package because if works so well.

Q. I have really badly receding gums and I have problems with eating sometimes I tend to now only go for the soft option.I am only 40 and am always consious of how I look so I dont smile and show these awful teeth I also bite hard on my teeth without always realising day and night please is there anything I can do x
A. The first thing that you need to do is find out whether you have gum disease. This may be a reason why your gums are receeding and your teeth are unsightly. You need to go to a dentist that has a hygienist.
You could also have bite problems so the dentist that you see should have experience in dealing with bite and TMJ issues. Ask the dentist what kind of training he/she has in these areas.
Kind regards

Q. can u tell what ecclusials means my dentist mentioned this at my check up and i didnt want to ask what it was
A. I presume you mean “occlusal” – which is the biting surface of the tooth.

Q. Hi I had veneers fitted to my front 4 top teeth 20 years ago the gums have now receeded and the original teeth at the top are now very discoloured. All my teeth are discoloured due to lots of medication as a child and my lower gums are also receeding. I would like to know what would be the best treatment to have all my teeth treated to look white as am very self consious of them in the present state Thanks
A. You probably have 2 options – either have beaching and 4 new veneers or have all the teeth visible in your smile venered. This second option may be the best option if your teeth are very discoloured or possibly belaching followed by veneers on all visible teeth.

Q. hi, im getting married in aug and have a tooth that sticks out at the front – its really annoying and i just want it be in line with the rest of the teeth in the front. Do i have enough time to get it fixed before my big day and what do u think is needed to sort it out?
A. The fastest fixes are veneers, preliminary orthodontics might be able to get some improvement if combined. I would recommend a detailed treatment plan which may cost a few hundred pounds to simulate a few treatments.
Basically it can be done in most cases.
Some practices like StJohns offer a free preliminary chat with a dentist to discuss the main choices.

Q. I have had 3 implants and expect to need more. In the meantime, I have a very loose molar, which although causes no pain appears to be infected (sinuses have awful putrid smell and discharge…treating with cipro) if infection clears can I wait for tooth to fall out naturally (held on by just 1 root at this point) rather than pay for extraction…would prefer to save cash for big bucks of implants…how long will it take? also, weird question …can I choke on it should it fall out in my sleep?
A. If the tooth is infected it is destroying the surrounding bone. The longer you wait the less bone that will remain which will effect placing an implant. The implant might be more expensive as bone re growth may be needed. You can choke on anything so I guess it is possible.

Q. hi Safeer, Im thinking about getting Lingual braces. I have an overbite and my teeth need straightend. My overbite gap from back teeth to front is just under 1cm. Do i qualify to get these braces and how much will they cost? Thanks
A.
hi
anybody can get lingual braces but they have a reputation for being very uncomfortable as well as difficult to eat with,
you should also consider invisalign as well as arch expansion appliances.
your best bet for costs is to see an orthodontist who does lingual braces and compare this to the cost of invisalign , usually 3250 approx

Q. I have tetracycline staining that I have had since I was very young, I also have crowding in the lower set. What would be the best way Lumineers, Veneers? would I need to have a brace to fix the crowding. Also given I may need a full set what would be the typical cost?
A. Hi
Firstly your options on the lower teeth are some form of orthodontics i.e braces, invisalign or clearstep.
If you have tetracycline staining on the upper then your options may be a whitening or veneers. The cost of veneers really depends on how many teeth the patient would want treating. Each veneer costs from £500. Of courses the cost depends on the level of quality of veneers you wish.

Q. Hello, i recently had my two front teeth bonded and didn’t like the result. I should have done invislign but my budget would not allow me. Can bonding be removed safely without harming the real tooth? Only the acid solution was used no drilling. If so, how can you tell the bonding from the real tooth? I’ve been to three dentists and they all say removing bonding is real hard and afraid to hit the real tooth when removing bonding from the surface of my teeth. What should I do?
A. I agree that bonding is never truly reversible, you are better to simulate a reasonable comprimise look ( even if that is your old appearance ) then remove the veneers and make a new set to the prescription that you chose.

Q. Hi.. I had root canal treatment 5 years ago. I felt from the start that the dentist had not done a great job. I have always had occasional pains and throbbing in the tooth after the treatment. I could put my tongue on the tooth and feel the throb Anyway, the past few days I have been having a very bad ache in it, I went to a new dentist and he said I have an absyss in the tooth, I am taking ABs and Anti Inflammatorys. He said the root canal was a bad job and he could see that from the Xray. I now have to see a root canal specialist and have it redone which I cannot afford. I just want to ask, is this a common thing to happen after 5 years? I look after my teeth. I want to write a letter to the dentist who did the RCT, and ask for a refund. Do you think I am wrong to do this? Thanks in advance..
A. Without seeing the Xray it is not possible for me to comment on the quality of the root filling. Root fillings can be difficult to carry out sometimes due to blockages and twists in the root. A specialst to redo the rot treatment5 would seem like a good idea as redoing root canal traetments can be difficult
