I would like veneers on approx 8 of my front teeth

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Q. I would like veneers on approx 8 of my front teeth but my dentist says because I grind my teeth, the wear and tear would be too severe and has advised me against the treatment. Is there any other treatment suitable in this case. Many thanks.

A.

The first option is to go down the orthodontic route and have braces. The second and much more lengthy option is to find out why you are grinding and fix this problem and then going for Veneers. Without assessing your mouth I would not be able to advise you on how easy or difficult this procedure would be for you as every case is different.
You are welcome to come and see me for a consultation to see if this would be possible for you.

Kind regards

Can you help me to decide which dentures I should ask for

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Q. Can you help me to decide which dentures I should ask for, I have one implant( approx 5 yrs) and one crown still in the top set, no dentures at the bottom. I have a temporary denture for now, but will want the best for permanent use. I would like details of cost and comfort. Thank you

A. An implant retained denture is a great option. Usually the upper denture is supported by a bar attached to 2 to 4 implants and the lower denture can be held in place by 2 to 4 implants with locators on ( I use Straumann locators).

How would teeth whitening procedure affect two capped teeth

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Q. How would a teeth whitening procedure affect the two capped teeth I have?

A. The whitening won’t affect the crowns. They might need replacing after the whitening has finished

I have one tooth on the front top that is shorter and looks broken

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Q. Hi Dr Komal Suri I have one tooth on the front top, that is shorter and looks broken, what would be the best way to fix it? – crown or veneer? Also my bottom teeth are overcrowed causing one of them to be difficult to clean? What would be the best solution for both? Thanks

A. If only one of your teeth is shorter and you haven’t traumatised it it any way it may be caused by a bite problem. If your lower teeth are crowded there may be one that is more prominent than the others and this may be grinding over the upper tooth during chewing.
A veneer is always better for the tooth as it is less destructive but only if the preparation stays within enamel. Before you have it done, if there are any bite problems these need to be sorted out first otherwise your veneer will break

I have decay in the crowned tooth which anchors my bridge

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Q. I have just been told that I have decay in the crowned tooth which anchors my bridge The other anchor is a crown also. The bridge was to fill a gap of one missing tooth. The bridge was only fitted 18 months ago. My dentist has advised that I leave the bridge and wait for it to loosen or until it gives me pain. She said my option would be a denture or implant eventually. I’m really concerned about just letting the tooth rot away. Can you advise if this is the right procedure

A.

Hard to tell exactly without seeing the tooth but in general I would not leave a tooth to decay. If you would like a free consultation with a dentist at our Birmingham Practice to discuss your options please contact us via our website or by phone 0121 643 0610

I have 4 front teeth that have some exposed dentin

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Q. I have 4 front teeth that have some exposed dentin – I have tried every sensitizing tooth paste and had litte success – Are they any other options then for the dentist to apply some bonding or de-sensitizing agent

A. hi there are agents of this kind which your dentist may be able to provide privately or you could try composite bonding if there is room
worse case scenario you may need root canal
also try cutting acid out in your diet as well as leaving some non whitening sensodyne toothpaste over the teeth last thing before you sleep for a couple of weeks

I have lost my molar teeth of the both side of the upper jaw

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Q. I have lost my molar teeth of the both side of the upper jaw. cab the dentures create problems in speaking?

A. Dentures can be difficult to manage when you first get then but most people find after a couple a weeks they can speak normally.  It is a case of trying your best to get used to the dentures.  The best option to replace missing teeth is dental implants.

I have had 4 veneers and 6 crowns replaced

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Q. Hello, I just got 4 veneers and 6 crowns replaced on my upper teeth. It seems to me one of my bicuspids is either too short or the one on the other side of my mouth is too long. other one is too long. How do I know what is ideal, for example what is best ratio to the teeth on the other side?

A. As a rule symmetry is best, however if it looks right I wouldn’t be too worried about sizes and ratio’s. If in doubt ask your dentist to take another look.

what is a temporary solution as my veneer has come off

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Q. please could you offer me a temporary solution as my veneer has come off one of my front teeth.

A. In a complete emergency if you can not get to a dentist, denture fixatives available from chemists could act as a temporary glue.  DO NOT USE SUPERGLUE.

How can I fix an abscess at home with raw tools

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Q. How can I fix an abscess at home with raw tools around the house? Or how expensive would it be to get this big thing removed before I die?

A. many thanks for your enquiry, obviously i would not recommend you perform any dentistry at home, my advice is seek the advice from a dentist, most offer free consultations and the maximum cost of an extraction would be £200. if this is not affordable i would ask you to seek the help for an emergency dentist by calling the NHS direct helpline.

I have an overbite and my bottom teeth cut into the skin above

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Q. I have a overbite and my bottom teeth cut into the skin above. i have also noticed my front teeth are coming out and all the other teeth ain’t in line what can i do about that and how much will it cost me. I am a single mother. Im 23 yrs old. thankin you in advance.

A. The best thing to do would be to have a consultation with an orthodontist. Your teeth need to be moved into a better position. You wouldn’t be able to get it on the NHS because the government have changed the rules and now some children also have to pay privately for braces. The treatment would probably cost about £3000

I have 2 front crowns at the front

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Q. hello, i have 2 front crowns at the front, but due to gum disease they have moved and my gums have receeded slightly. i have a regular visits to my dentist and hygienist , i have been referred to Guy’s dental hospital, but the solution they came up with was pink veneer to cover gum recession and reshaping exsisting crowns,i want something more permanenet. Is there some sort of gum /tooth implant that can be performed,i’m not worried how intrusive this has to be, so i can regain my confidence.i will be very grateful for any information you can offer

A. hi
it is difficult to gather what your exact situation is but redoing the crowns with a collar of gum coloured porcelain can get good results , if the teeth are genuinely of poor prognosis with a lot of bone loss then an implant could be considered but gum positions with this are difficult to predict

theres a very slight overlapping of my front upper teeth

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Q. Actually theres a very slight overlapping of my front upper teeth. What treatment could you recommend me?

A. I recommend orthodontic work. If wearing a visible brace is an issue for you an invisilign (clear brace)may be an option. I recommend you see an orthodontist to explore the options open to you.

7 months ago I had a dental crown placed on an implant

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Q. 7 months ago I had a dental crown placed on an implant and now it is loose. I went to my peridontist and was told that the abutment screw was loose and needed to be tightened. He also told me that the crown would be drilled into to reach the screw. I just finished paying for the crown. I am wondering if there is anything that can be done to save it. I also would like to know what can do to prevent this from happening over again.

A. Hi This is a common problem with implants. If the crown is drilled through with a small hole and tightened down it will still be ok. Ideally the crown could be cemented with a weak cement then tapped off to gain access to the screw to allow future tightening.

iam epeleptic and unable to work i were a denture

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Q. iam epeleptic and unable to work i were a denture witch i fear i will choke on in a fit would i be entitled to get implants on NHS or some help with the costs could you please advise

A. Hi

I would recommend that you see your dentist and see if he could make you a better fitting denture or refer you to a dental hospital.
Unfortunately it is very rare to have dental implants on the NHS. Majority of the cases which are done on the NHS are either trauma or cancer cases.

In the old days if you lost all your teeth you got a set of dentures

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Q. 1) In the old days if you lost all your teeth you got a set of dentures/false teeth. You got 2 dentures one for the upper part of the mouth and one for the lower part. Can you do something similar with implants? So in other words you sort of implant a set of dentures rather than implanting each tooth one by one? I hope I explained myself well. What would be the approximate cost? 2) What is the difference between the Branemark system, Straumann system and Zimmer system? 3) When I look at a lot dental implant websites they say something like Branemark system implant will cost X amount without crown. What do they mean by this? Are they saying A) All implants need a crown and that will cost extra B) You can have an implant only but if you want to make the tooth look even better you need a crown as well C) Not all implants need a crown but in some cases it is essential and that will cost extra

A. This is a complex subject but in broad terms yoiu can have a few implants placed to support a denture, Branemark has an all on 4 system to hold a denture bridge that is removed once a year , or you can have fixed bridge work held in by about 8 implants per arch.  I wouldn’t advise you haveing a single implant placed per tooth lost – that would make 28 implants and would be overtreatment in my view.

a dentist has recomended a full mouth of implants

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Q. hi there after having a polop removed at the hospital the dentist who carried out the proceedure has recomended a full mouth of implants as he was worried that bone loss is going to occur. after reading the info on your site i was wondering if having implants for the full mouth, what the dental hygine routin would be? it says normal hygine but what happens with food that is stuck or is there no plate?

A. A full mouth implant reconstruction usually means bridges and crowns. Normal brushing with additional cleaning between teeth using bottle brushes like “Tepes” or woodsticks is fine it is the same as crowns on natural teeth.
If you have a denture anchored by implants it should be firm and not trap food. It is not difficult to remove the plate and bush the clips that hold onto the denture. However some patients are not as diligent at doing this as they should be!

I had dental crown for my top front two teeth

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Q. I had dental crown for my top front two teeth before. They had been 12 years. For some reasons and the policy of the dental insurance, I recently have had partial dentures for that two teeth. I have been feeling difficulites to chew the food and dentures would fall out themselves. The metal frame of the dentures makes me feel not comfortable all the time. I am so regret to have this surgery. Should I talk to the dentist about the issue of the dentures and Is there any way I can do if I want a treatment of dental crown? Thank you for your advices.

A. I would talk to your dentist and find out about other options for these front teeth as the partial denture doesn’t appear to be the best treatment for you
