I really really hate my teeth

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Q. Hello there:) I’m a 16 year old girly, and I really really hate my teeth! Everyone tells me there’s nothing wrong with them and to be honest there isn’t any major problems! I just want them to look perfect! For me! Here’s an idea of how they look:- / < My top teeth slightly stick out \ < & this is the bottom row. I just want both rows pushed back, straight, but the thing is i really don’t want any normal braces! My hearts set on lingual. As my teeth stick out having normal braces would look flaming rediculous! Could i have lingual braces? All my teeth are together with no gaps apart from the front two, so would having teeth removed be an issue? Im honestly not fussed about the price! but i really wan’t lingual and no other, not even invisalign it’l just look silly. The un-noticable the better! As i said i’m 16 but do i have to pay the whole amount straight away, could i not pay a fee over a period of time as of my circumstances? Sorry if i blabber on, i just really wan’t my teeth straight and my private dentist said no when i was 15. So now i pay the price! Please do get in touch if you have time! I’d love to hear your verdict on my sad dilema! Much appreciated:) Ps: I have no idea if you even specialise in lingual braces, total guess!

A. Hi

It is possible you could have lingual orthodontics, but impossible to say without a clinical examination.

If your teeth are crowded then you may require some teeth to be removed to create space.
Many practices now offer financial palns to allow you to spread the cost from 1 to 5years.

I do not specialise in lingual orthodontics, therefore i would recommend searching for a good orthodontist who carries out this procedure routinely.

Best of luck!

My teeth have been bleached and are whiter than B1

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Q. Hi My teeth have been bleached and are whiter than B1 – they match the first new ‘bleached shade’. I have two teeth that have been cosmetically bonded with B1 resin but these now look ‘yellow’ compared to the others. My dentist says he cannot find a supplier of the composite resin to match the bleached shades. I know cosmetic dentists can obtain bleached shade resin – can you tell me where my dentist can obtain this from. Many thanks

I have 4 teeth that are heavily filled

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Q. Hi, I have a question. I have 4 teeth that are heavily filled also on 2 of them I dont have that much tooth left. My nhs dentist has told me that they cannot fit crowns on the 2 teeth because there is not that much tooth left. Now, I dont really want to go for Implants now, because they are basically surviving on a large filling. Can i request crowns or should my dentist advise me what I should do. I basically feel like she is leaving it too late and leaving it till i dont have much tooth left and then saying i cannot put crowns on there. I am only 28 and only eat on one side of my mouth, so this is the reason why most of my teeth are filled on one side.. My question is can I request crowns or should she advise me. ..Pls can you get back to me. Thanks

A. Your dentist probably has his / her reasons for not wanting to place crowns on these teeth I would recommend you talk to him/ her and discuss alternative options.  If you are still unhappy you can always go to get a second opinion.  If the teeth are not very strong they may not be suitable for crowns.

I have recently got 4 front veneers

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Q. I have recently got 4 front veneers, and i have now found that my breath is a bit smelly…is this normal and if so how do i combat it (other than brushing and using mouthwash day and night? It is REALLY getting me down! Thanks

A. Bad breath is not caused by veneers.  Bad breath is caused primarily by sulphur producing bacteria.  The key is to remove these completely with brushing, and especially flossing.

I have 2 posted crown’s as my two front upper teeth

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Q. Hello, I have 2 posted crown’s as my two front upper teeth. They have been crowned for 20 years now and i think its time i had them removed and implants to replace them. Would the removal and the titatium impant be done on the same day and also would the temporary teeth be fitted also. I would also want to have veneers fotted to the remaining upper teeth to compliment. It would seem you’re quite the expert when it comes to implants but as i live i yorkshire could you advise on my travelling after the proceedure? As in would i be ok to drive……ok to catch the train or would i need a overnight? Many thanks

A.

You are fit to drive after a reasonable r

est if you are relaxed about dentistry. An anxious patient probably should relax a little before driving long distances bringing someone with you who can drive is probably the best option.

You can fit implants on the same day that teeth are removed but it is a little less favourable ( in my opinion ) than waiting 6-8weeks. I personally wouldnt “load” the newly placed implants with crowns for 3-6 months. The temporary we iuse most during extraction healing and implant healing is an adhesive bridge.

I would be happy to do a free initial assesment/discussion on the ways to manage your case. If you wish to proceed to a full case written treatment plan with photos, study models and xrays we ask for £100 to contribute to our costs.

Hi there i am wanting my teeth sorting out

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Q. Hi there, at the present moment im an nhs patient and im wanting my teeth sorting out i wont smile when people look or talk to me, when i chew i cant use my front teeth as they dont meet up with my lower ones, they go over the top, ive askd my dentist what i can do and she just said leave them alone as your gums are not 100% perfect but ive had terrible gums all my life and nobody has said anything about in the dentistry, she also said ive got too many fillings for anybody to even assess me, how can she judge a person by this, my old dentist said the reason why ive had 2 have these fillings which were my 1st ever at the age of 26 was because of my pregnancies the babies took all my calcium from me and put veneers on my upper left 2nd n 3rd and my upper right 2nd n 3rd teeth, im 39yrs old now and my husband goes mad at me when we have family get togethers as im always behind the camera, we didnt even have wedding pictures done beacuse i wont have my photos taken or anything, please can you give me some advice as to what i could do, i dont like locally to your surgery but if i have some advice then i may be able to do something as im getting to be a recluse because of this and cant even find a job… please can you email me back thanks

A. the first thing you have to do is get your gums treated. It sounds like you have gum disease and it is nothing to do with the calcium being removed from the bone during pregnancy. If you have always had gum problems then chances are you will have had the disease or at least gingivitis before you got pregnant. Hormones released during pregnancy cause the gums to further inflame and the bacteria associated with gum disease causes bone loss and mobility of teeth. It would be wrong for any dentist to carry out restorative treatment whilst your gum disease is left untreated. You will not gat adequate treatment from the NHS. you need to seek private dental treatment from a dentist that has a hygienist and address this issue. Only then will you be eligible for restorative work. Restorative work can be carried out but again this will have to be private. It is very unlikely you will be able to have this carried out on the NHS

For years i had a dental implant

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Q. For years i had a dental implant. I have unsuccessfuly had a 2 new implants fitted, but they keep faling out. I have taken 3 courses of antibiotics to treat a gum infection in the same area, but pus just still keeps building up inside my gum and it is getting painful. The dentist now suggests that I have a bridge instead of an implant. Will I need my gums scaled in order to eliminate the infection?

A. Whenever this treatment is carried out I would always recommend treating any gum disease prior to complex restorative treatment.

A. You should go and see a good cosmetic dentist who has had advanced training in implant and restorative dentistry so they can give you as mant options as possible.  Options range from cosmetic dentures to implants to recreate your teeth.

can my braces be taken off for my wedding day

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Q. Hi There Sorry to bother you, & thank you very much to offer a place to ask the question. Actually I am having my orthodontic treatment from last year & having the fixed braces on both upper & lower jaw. Now I got my wedding planned on March next year & I dont want to have braces on that special day. So is it possible to get the fixed braces off for 2-3 weeks & then fixed it. I dont wanna ask this question to my doctor, so please help me on this. Regards

A. Hi.   It is possible to remove the braces for that day but you would need everything renewing after as the old brace won’t go back on. I would ask the Orthodontist I’m sure he wouldn’t mind although he will probably charge you for a new set of brackets

my teeth are set out really well but the bottom of them are not straight

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Q. hello, my teeth are set out really well but the bottom of them are not straight. The two top teeth start off straight and then go up a bit and my bottom teeth between the two of them is a chip and it really upsets me and the rest have chips out of them and it really knocks my confidence. I cry because it upsets me so much. Is there anything that a dentist can do to make them straight because this will really help ? thank you

A. You could have a consultation with an orthodontist and then ask a general dentist to repair the chips once the teeth have been straighted

I’ve long been rather embarrased about my teeth

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Q. Hi, I’ve long been rather embarrased about my teeth. They are both very crooked and discoloured and I’m looking to get them corrected. I was looking at veneers but was not sure if my teeth needed straightening first as they are not only crooked but have rotated and are not even in line. I’d also not have braces or visible mouth work if possible due to my line of work. Can you give me any advice. I’m also rather curious as to how much it would cost roughly.

A. Full mouth orthodontic treatment with clear aligners such as clearstep or invisalign guide price £3-4000 but simple preveneer alignment is £1-2000.
A guide price for Veneers £4-800 per tooth, expect a multiple 8 in the upper or lower set.
Some practices like ours offer a free assesment with a dentist. Call Amy on 0121 643 0610 for details.

Q. for the past three years i have had a gum infection that keeps coming back my dentist and hospital refuse to treat this even though i am in really bad pain and very swollen how can i get rid of this infection altogether

A. It sounds unusual for the dentist not to want to treat this. Perhaps you should ask another dentist for a 2nd opinion.

I am looking for a long term solution to teeth whitening

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Q. I am looking for a long term solution to teeth whitening. I have brown patches on my front teeth. I think the tooth whitening bleach takes only two years, but I would prefer one that is permanent. What would you propose and how much will that cost?

A. I cannot discuss cost but the other options you have open to you are composite bonding and porcelian veneers.  These are much longer lasting than bleaching.

I have had Inman Aligners which I wore for over 9 months

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Q. I have had Inman Aligners which I wore for over 9 months before giving up because I had to work abroad. My teeth had not got into the position they were promised they would by my dentist. Now I am back in the UK, I would like to finish treatment but not by the same dentist. He said I should try invisalign and I would only need 2 sets, but how can I be sure this would be right? I do not want to go through more money and time and maybe 4 or 5 sets of expensive invisalign. Can you advise? Can you promise that Invisalign ARE invisable! I have to work with the public and speak a lot to them. I do not want months of mickey taking again.

A. Invisalign, Clearstep and other clear positioner systems are still basically braces, some people respond better than others. The system providers state on one hand that if you wear the appliances for the prescribed time each day that you will get the result. On the other hand they also have provision to adapt the case during treatment if it doesn’t go to plan. Cleary there is some conflict in the two statements.

The General Dental Council  produces lists of specialist Orthodontists if you want Chapter & Verse on the subject.

To my Knowledge Clearstep is less visible than Invisalign. Both are visible if you look closely but not in casual conversation.
